Television The Caf' Anime Thread

Up to date with Seven Deadly Sins barring this latest season currently airing. Seen a couple meh reviews on it so will wait until the full season is done before catching up with it.

Will just continue with MHA for now and finish a few old non-anime series I paused and then come back to anime around December and ask for recommendations if nothing catches my eye on Netflix.

I just went on to my manga site to see if an update for Promised Neverland was available, and was shocked to see Black Lagoon. I watched about 2 episodes a good while ago. I was under the impression the series finished years ago.
 
Hey guys, new to this side of the forum, but being an avid anime watcher, i hope to become a constant in the discussions when I can.

My favourite anime would be, in no order, Attack on Titan, Monster, Erased, One Piece, Hunter x Hunter and Steins Gate, but have seen many more. Quick question, but do we have any Attack on Titan fans here? I am tortured by theories and questions with no one to turn to who has seen the whole show. :lol:

The latest episode of Vinland Saga was great.
It was satisfying to see a character of Thorfinn's hubristic qualities to be completely humiliated. For those familiar with Greek tragedy, I really think it could be an anagnorisis moment for him. When Askeladd said he'd teach the protagonist to kill someone he hates, I don't think he was talking about himself, but rather the man who hired him to kill Thors. Moreover, I find the way characters such as Askeladd, and certainly Canute tackle the concept of religion to be profoundly interesting. As a matter of fact, the conclusions drawn reminds me of Satan's objective in John Milton's Paradise Lost.

For me, Hajime no Ippo will always be the greatest anime of all time.

But right now, I really want someone to throw me a toss.
 
Favourite sports anime for me is Ping Pong the Animation. Mind you, I've only just added it to my anime rotation having finished both seasons of Kakegurui. Really enjoying it, thus far.

I would also recommend Kuroko no Basket, another basketball one that has more emphasis on the shonen part of the genre. Gave me goosbumps when I was younger.

Im guessing the show has improved again? I kinda fell off during the Whole Cake Island arc, but been hearing good stuff about Wano. Plus my boy Zoro will be back finally, so thinking of starting up again.
Any more details/ story development Sabo?

Really loving this right now. I didn't know what direction they'd take after Thors died, but I have been surprised. The show gets better and better. It's confusing at times as well as you don't know whether to like Askeladd or not- he will do something quite noble in one moment and the next thing you know he's slaughtered a village.

To be fair, considering Oda had initially planned on writing/drawing only the “Four Emperors” saga before developing/adding the whole pre-timeskip story line to One Piece, the slow start with Fishman Island, Punk Hazard and Whole Cake Island was entirely expected — it's all just a loooooong build-up to the battle/crescendo with Kaido and Big Mom. Though yeah, the pace has definitely picked up with Wano (and especially the Reverie info-dumps). The artwork is also top-notch these days since Wano Kuni (based on Feudal Japan) is much more personal to him than say Alabasta (Egypt/Arabia) or Whiskey Peak (Pueblo settlements), and he's regularly divulging long-awaited bits on historical figures/events (including Garp, bounties for the Yonko and Pirate King, the Roger/Whitebeard Pirates, and an even older crew that was more than a match for them).

I recently read the One Piece manga from the start to the current chapter for the first time and I thought the early timeskip stuff was lot better than I remember it being (really helps not having to wait every week for a chapter and not having the substandard animation of the badly paced anime in mind). A certain dragon form is foreshadowed as early as Punk Hazard.

It's a masterpiece for me. I actually watched the show blindly. I had no idea of the plot, I was oblivious to what other people thought about the show, and I skipped the cinematic intro/opening when the ost plays, and you get a sense of what will happen in later episodes. Therefore, I was under the impression Thors was the main character when watching ... until his death of course. Like yourself, I wondered where the show would go from that point. I think it's utterly brilliant the way Askeladd has revolved around the plot, one could even be forgiven for thinking he's the main character. And it's almost like Thorfinn isn't the second main character either. He's very much on the periphery, a pawn that lacks guidance, accountablity, and a slave to his habits. For me, it's a constant reminder that he lacks a fatherly figure in his life, yet alone positioning the audience to question whether revenge on Askeladd would be the right course of action. The flashback of Askeladd's backstory where he mercilessly killed his father, does beg the question of whether that was foreshadowing of Thorfinn. It might well be the case that following humiliating defeat; realising that it's his very incentive to get revenge, which has made him do the dirty work of Askeladd under the pretext of "I'll let you challenge me and heroically give justice to your father" that may position Thorfinn to put on an act himself. A more mature version of himself. Humbled by the defeat, regain the respect of Ask, Canute, and Thorkell and then ruthlessly get revenge when nobody expects it. However, that would be at odds with his pride, where he previously had the opportunity to get revenge during Askeladd's sleep, and chose otherwise. In that sense, the contrast between those characters is powerful. And yet, it was the legendary Thors, who still has his reputation in tact that did something which would typically be seen as unheroic (faking death, fleeing from battle, seeking peace).

Yup, I pretty much agree with everything you have said. It's shows like this and Attack on Titan that are great because the characters are so much more complex than you realise, you can't really guess what's going to happen as easily as you can with others. Also it's not as simple as good vs evil, it's not black and white like that- a lot greyer.
 
Vinland Saga is a real masterpiece. One of the best animes I have seen this year. Each episode is brilliant in its own way.

What a show it was.. I think I saw the whole anime 3 times.. I just loved it as a kid.. Too bad we haven't had any new episodes or movies after the series ended..
 
Bit busy these days so the only anime I’ve been able to follow has been Fate: Babylonia, but I think it’s been brilliant so far. The animation quality is insane, and I’m heavily invested in the Fate universe so my enjoyment is even more.

Im looking forward to restarting Vinland Saga as well when I get more free time, I stopped around episode 6 or so.

When I was younger, Aizen's reveal was so shocking and unexpected that I thought Bleach could possibly have a deeper more complex story from most Shonen. Oh how I was wrong, the Manga, if you read it got very confusing.

The finale for Vinland Saga next week. Damn, gonna miss it a lot. Hopefully it'll be great and serves such an amazing anime well.

I'm more worried about lack of news about season 2 unlike Dr.Stone, but the preview for the finale is saying "End of the prologue" so that's the only piece hope I have.

This what I wrote re Vinland Saga final on both Reddit and MAL. Guess I would like to share it here as well.

My mind is still absolutely blown.

I for one don't think Askeladd's death was unpredictable. The preview for the episode said "a shocking ending to the man who gave his all" or something, so he had death flags all over him. It was kinda expected since this is just a prologue that Thorfinn won't be the one to kill him, as he would have achieved his goal then and will be the end of his arc, so he should be killed by someone else to help Thorfinn develop and realize the meaning of his father's worlds and life, about the meaning of being the true warrior and all that.

However, the totally mind blowing thing is how this went on. I was totally blown when Askeladd insulted the king then beheaded him. How this went on, fecking hell that was ridiculous. I was expecting him to kill the king in a strategic way as usual. Maybe Canute would kill him later as a revenge for Ragnar or something, but how this went on, unbelievable. I think he wasn't just putting an act only, yes he did but at the same time he really lost his mind when the king insulted his mother as a slave, as he showed a similar reaction in episode 20 when the king said the same thing. In one way he got his revenge on the king for insulting his mother, saved Wales and prepared the stage for Canute to claim the throne. Truly a remarkable way to die. Masterpiece of a writing.

I am not going to jump into the manga for now for the hope of experiencing this fully animated one day. The next arc, I suppose, should be all about how Thorfinn will go on with his life now. It's the beginning of the development of him, now that he lost his goal and his life has become empty, whether he will set his sights on Canute or give up on the revenge idea all together and start understanding what happened to his father to make him change his life.

A masterpiece of an anime. I always thought it's a 9/10 but with such a finale it can't be anything less than 10/10. Honestly it'd be pretty hard to spoil it for anyone. Even if you know one or 2 things, predicted one or 2 events, the mangaka has enough tools under his sleeve to totally surprise you and feck up with your mind. I haven't stopped replaying the final episode since it was aired till now.

Askeladd is one of the best ever anti hero characters I have seen in anime. His character is so well written its phenomenal, from his back story to his life and his glorious death. He started as an obvious villain then gradually became a main character, more of an antihero and sometimes even a protagonist. The mangaka has done a marvelous job in creating such a complex character that forces you to keep jumping from loving to hating to loving him again. Everything about him is perfect to the moment that I can't believe how the story will go on without him. If a season 2 is ever announced, I'm sure I will take a long time to get accustomed to the idea of him not appearing anymore. For a long time for me Vinland Saga will always equal Askeladd for me, just like how Psycho pass equals Makishima, Monster equals Johan Libert, Death note equals L and so on for me. He's as memorable as them. But considering how genius the mangaka has shown himself to be, I won't be surprised if he had succeeded in creating similar brilliant characters in the rest of the story that I hope I will experience it through anime one day
