The Best Video Game You've Ever Played?

IGN just did a 100 best games ever list: http://uk.top100.ign.com/2008/index.html

Top 20:

20. Super Mario Bros 3 [NES, 1990]
19. Conker's Bad Fur Day [N64, 2001]
18. GTA: San Andreas [PC, X-Box, PS2, 2004]
17. Super Smash Bros Melee [Cube, 2001]
16. Super Smash Bros Brawl [Wii, 2008]
15. Halo [X-Box, 2001]
14. Final Fantasy III [SNES, 1994]
13. Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night [PS1, 1997]
12. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory [X-Box, 2005]
11. Super Mario 64 [N64, 1996]
10. Shenmue II [Dreamcast, ?]
9. Resident Evil 4 [Cube, PS2, Wii, 2005]
8. Metal Gear Solid [PS1, 1998]
7. GoldenEye 007 [N64, 1997]
6. Super Metroid [SNES, 1994]
5. Metal Gear Solid 3 [PS2, 2004]
4. The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past [SNES, 1992]
3. Soul Calibur [Dreamcast, 1999]
2. Chrono Trigger [SNES, 1995]
1. The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time [N64, 1998]

Interesting list, some of them rather bizarre, particularly the two Smash Bros games right next to each other like that. I'd have Melee, Mario 64 and GoldenEye all in my personal top 10.

Lots of Nintendo games in there. Don't exactly disagree though seeing as I consider the N64 and the NES to be the 2 best consoles of all time.

All time: Shenmue II Nothing, and I mean nothing compares this game. The open-world in this game was fantastic and there was so much to do and see, and it also has one of the best storylines I've seen in a video game. It just pains me that Shenmue III doesn't look likely :(

This gen: Mass Effect I'm a huge fan of KOTOR and BioWare in general so its no surprise that I loved this game. Again nice big galaxy to explore, great storyline and characters and gameplay was pretty damn awesome too. Cant wait for the sequel!

I didn't rate that list at all, no Tetris, no Street Fighter 2, no Pac-Man etc. Yet theres all these American Football games?

I saw that on IGN's list, I'd never even heard of it. Fair play.

I agree. Just thought I'd show what they think is the best 20. I'd have all 3 of those games in there.

MGS 2 is underated because Snake is not the main character. Although I still think 3 is better, and 4 probably deserves a mention now.

1. Age of Empires 2
2. Secret of Mana
3. Terranigma
4. Baldurs gate 1
5. Baldurs Gate 2
6. Planescape Torment
7. Supermario bros 3
8. Ocarina of Time (this game blew me away)
9. Mechwarrior 2 (woah this game rocked with a joystick)
10. Deus Ex (for its time, superb storyline)

Best game ever by a mile.

Honorable mention to Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. I'd say that's my second favourite game of all time. Everything from start to finish was masterful. The music, the graphics, the enemies, the twists and the cut-scenes, which for me flew by, and left me wanting more. The Frogs, The Gekko, The PMC's, The Militia, The B&B Unit were all phenomenally desgined enemies. The soundtrack is also one of the best I have heard in any game. All the boss battles were immense aswell, particularly the final one.

Gears of War,

Graphics are immense, headshots mainly, very fun and easy to play online,
I like 3rd person shooters and in my opinions it is by far the best online game for the 360, GoW2 comes out soon aswell, will be amazing!

The two best game I've ever played.....wasted hours of my life away on these 2 games...but you know what...it was worth it :D

XCOM UFO Enemy Unknown

Remains to this day as the greatest video game I have ever played. I believe it is ranked #1 by several sites as well.

If strategy games were not your thing I can understand you not liking XCOM but if you like RPG's/Strategy games, XCOM is one of, if not the greatest video game made.

In depth base building and management, revolutionary open ended game play. Unrivaled to this day is it's squad combat and the squad system in general. Permanent death, meaningful stats. Protecting veterans was important.

Fantastic story line revealed through the UFOpedia. I am sure I am forgetting plenty, but last but not least. IT WAS CREEPY and incredibly intense.
The first time you ran into crysalids in a terror mission and you watched as your crack veterans got RAPED, anyone who played it will never forget that shit ;p It really conveyed a sense of desperation, like all hell just broke loose.

Most amazing game ever. The game was practically perfect.

Hell yeah, what a game.

I used to play out with me mates, football or climbing trees or knock-a-door-run or summat.....

Pokeon red version: I was addicted to this game when I was a kid. Wouldn't think twice about having a go now either.

Tekken 3 or 5: Best fighter games ever made. The fun I've had playing these games with friends is unreal. Great gameplay and realism.

Marvel vs. Capcom: ditto Tekken except for the realism. The suepr combos were intense.

Final fantasy VII: the only rpg I've ever been able to play without getting bored. Great storyline and interesting characters.

Oh aye, great realism. A 16 year old girl being able to take punches from a Kuma, and having equal damage resistance to a 40 year old professional martial artist. Extremely fun game series though.

...feck. I meant the sidestepping, stage involvement, and consistent fighting styles of each character. I may be mistaken, but I believe tekken as the first to incorporate all of these into the gameplay. That jibe was uncalled for, ktw.

Can't decide the very best, here are a few I regard very highly

MGS4
GT4
Shenmue
Tomb Raider

Only joking mate, no offence intended,

GLU I know KTW personally and I can safely say he has a bigger cock than me.

Excluding all early Tomb Raider...

Commandos 2: Men Of Courage (PC)

Frustrating: Yes.
Totally immersive: Yes.
One of the best strategy games ever made: Yes!

Street Fighter II Turbo - without question the greatest fighting game of all time, if i could get back a fraction of the money i poured into the arcades playing this i could save the worlds economy solo. it must be 100yrs old by now but is still played at tournament level to a frightening standard. beautifully balanced fighters, great music, bags and bags of fun. brilliant.

Final Fantasy VII - everything about it was Epic, i remember the first time i played it after every big set piece i kept expecting the credits to role thinking the size of the battle/scale of the cutscene i'd just witnessed was usually left for the end of games but it just kept going and going. the Materia system was fantastic. had some great side quests (how much time did i spend breeding chocobos ffs) and by the time you could roam the world map freely it kept you levelling up into ridiculous levels as you chased that last little item or beat that last big weapon. its Epic, just Epic

Half Life 2 (+episodes) - the mechanincs of the gameplay were flawless, had some nice weapons and good characters but it was the story and how it was told through the NPCs that really sucked you into the game. the game world was so real every inch of the design portrayed the perfect atmosphere to back up the narrative and you became completely immersed in the game. i've never been one for FPS tbh but this was so much more than a run and gun game, or at least its beauty was that it led you to believe it was more than a run and gun game.

other mentions: God of War 1&2, GTA Vice City, Gears of War, ISS Pro, Tomb Raider

Same here, so true. The 'turbo' bit is important, it was a lot better and faster than the original SFII. I played it not that long ago on the SNES, even if it was released in 1992, it stands up today as an amazing fighting game.

Anyone ever play X-Men vs. Street Fighter? It was on Sega Saturn, possibly Jaguar too. I loved that game too.

I loved Turbo. For me it's the best beat'em up, ever.

The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past for me I think, Diablo2 as the dark horse, most addictive game ever.

Frontier - Elite II

Huge (Massive) area of game play, diverse choices as to what you wanted to do.

Just a really fun immersive game, never been topped for me, if only they would re-make it
