For me, it would have to be Final Fantasy VII. It was the first RPG I had ever played, and what a way to introduce me to the world of Role Playing Games.

The characters were phenomenal and deep, each had their own story and you could quite easily connect with each one. Cloud and Soldier, Aeris and the Ancients, Cid with his 'Space' dream, Barret and Avalanche, and of course Spehiroth and his quest for power. The character development in that game was absolutely outstanding.

The Battle System was also the best out of all the FF's I have had the pleasure of playing. The Materia system, whilst difficult to grasp at first, was genius. Some of the combinations you could put together were brilliant, and finding the perfect combinations was great fun.

The soundtrack, as I'm sure anyone who has played it would agree, was absolutely brilliant. I used to delibirately make Boss Battles drawn out so I could listen to the music that accompanied it (I'm sure some of you did the same!), and when it came to the games more 'sad' moments, such as Aeris' death, the music that accompanied that was also brilliant.

FMV's were out of this world too. The Sapphire Weapon one at Junon was probably my favourite, though there are so many to choose from.

The story itself was what captivated me though. Despite being only 7 at my first time playing through, it was an incredible story. Despite being very, very deep and difficult to understand (I'm still not quite sure I understand the full story now, despite having completed it 6 times), it was one which instantly caught your imagination.

Of course the game didn't come without it's flaws. The translation was horrible at times, and the ending wasn't as good as it could have been. But aside from that, in my opinion the game was pretty much perfect. Everything from the Weapons (Emerald, Ruby, Diamond, Ultima - all amazing fights), the equipment, materia, the story, the twists was all phenomenally done, and for that FFVII is the greatest video game I have ever played.

1)God of War II by far the best game I've ever playedA truely HD game for the ps2 ,simply stunning gameplay and perfect storyline (I can't fecking wait to crash Zeus

2)GTA III: Pure non stop entertainement from the first minute, I loved everything about that game, the content was huge and the storyline addictive.

3)FIFA 09: I place that high for me cause in terms of gameplay apart from a few little changes, a sports (specially football) game never brought to me this kinda satisfaction in terms of realism and enjoyment.

edit: ffs i wrote GTA IV whereas I meant GTA III:nervous:

Secret of mana, imagine being 10 years old, with a snes and a multitap controlling three characters in a live fighting environment.

It had a better story than any of the FF's too. and the music was bitching

Age of Empires 2 & conquerors expansion. Online it is the best game in the world, still. 15 years old and still the best game out there in my opinion.

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. (360)

16 player online was groundbreaking (probably wasn't the first game to do this, but was the first time I'd experienced it), almost all my mates got a 360 after spending 10 minutes playing this online around at mine - was brilliant.

GoldenEye 007 on Nintendo 64.

I cannot praise this game enough, it has just about everything. It was visually excellent, it was challenging, had great multi-player as well as solo missions and has so many hidden gems that even now I'd see something new if I played it today. It re-created the film perfectly, adding its own unique touches and it actually got me more interested in the Bond films as well. I wanted to see more and more of the older films. Whether it was trying to complete it on 00 Agent, turning the cheats I'd gained on and messing around levels (Natalya got killed A LOT in these scenarios) or having a 4-player deathmatch with mates, I've never had so much fun with a computer game.

There are only 2 games I've ever finished playing and kinda thought, 'wow'. They were FFX and Farenheit.

Could never get into FFX, and my first (and only) FF game was FFX, the storyline I thought was great, graphics for some of the cutscenes amazing, good characters (I actually felt sad when Tidus 'dies' at the end), I played it steadily over 4 or 5 month period to prolong it and it was a fnatastic game.

Farenheit was just something that had never been done before in a game, the way it just throws you in a situation and what you do can effect the rest of the game, it wasn't linear, but it wasn't too free roam ether. Graphics looking back weren't fab but I really enjoyed playing it.

what was your nick on the zone?

mine was Darkflame and i was leet

but yeah, best online game ever

its only ten years old. I started playing when i was 12

Well at the time....it was Half-life.

It was so far ahead and better than any other FPS at the time plus the mods that came out later for years where the most played online by a mile at the time.

Well I had a few to be honest, I was pretty good, not great, but was usually pushing around about 1850 . Were you in a clan? THe zone closing was the worst thing to ever happen to the internet. Used to love playing 1v1 GA, had some truly epic games

did you play rm or dm?

i was about 19k DM, 17k rm

uh, was in KoTR clan, Moon clan, Mh amongst others. Mostly played Deathmatch, but random map was fun too.

i remember playing a four hour long game once, the only breakthrough coming when we had run out of wood on the whole map, but some guy mined all the stone, and then got the relics and build hundreds of towers.

no wood, no chance.

Theres still a place to play online, mine have a game tonight actually

Yeah I know, I played on the new place a bit but ever since I went wireless internet it has never worked for me, so I just stopped playing. Really gutted about it to be honest as one good game of GA is the best online gaming experience known to man. I was in _W_, _RU, BMC and a few others. I played RM, couldn't stand DM. Only ever played one game of DM when i was in _RU_ clan and got twatted by some French bloke. Even had the pleasure of getting annihilated by Chris once as well. RM GA was the best, but I admit I was also a lover of michi

oh no! not michi!

that map killed deathmatch because it ruined the only good part of it, the speed of it. I never wanted to fight trees.

good fun in rm though cos you could make little ewok tree settlements that they could never find.

Once you got to a certain level in DM and you could stop the rush then it really opened out into a big hitting barnstormer, you had to get your eco up so quick tho i used to hurt my hand from using the mouse so much.

It's very hard for me to point out one which I can call the best. Half-Life is a very strong candidate. Command & Conquer is also high up on the list. Knights of the Old Republic, maybe. Age of Empires 2. I might be able to set up a top 50 list. Maybe even a top 10 list, with a few reservations. But a 'best game ever'? Un-doable.

I couldn't play DM, I didn't know what to do with so many resources at the start- didn't know where to begin, I suppose I cold have learned, but I never really enjoyed it to be honest. Michi was great on rm, I loved it. Mainly because I was known to be one of the better regular michi players on the zone. Could imp at 25 every time. Can't undertsand why you would want to play michi on DM mind, would kind of defeat the object of it. The best thing about AoE though is the build ritual you would follow at the beginning of every game and how everyone strived to get that perfect build. When players were so evenly matched, one little mistake, like not luring your boar to your TC properly early on, could screw up your whole game. Good times.

I can't believe you played through that when you were 7. I think I was 14 and I still didn't totally get the story!

FF7 would be my choice too by the way.

IGN just did a 100 best games ever list: http://uk.top100.ign.com/2008/index.html

Its a shit list though, basically filled with Nintendo and American Sports games.

i had a particular tactic that i loved to use... ummm i think it was china i think i did a knight rush with them that was awesome. I boomed to castle age and because i was good at deathmatch i was good at microing my attacking units while still booming, so i made sure i won the fights.

oh no, actually that was it. who was it that got more food from boars? goths? huns? i used them and boar hoarded. haha.

good stuff. They wont ever make a game as perfect as that again, everything was so well though out, and there was such a focus on speed over stupid 8ft tall mega god units or gimmicks.

I can't put my finger on the best game i've ever played but i'll put down ones that if i played now i would still enjoy and would fill me withe nostalgia.

Final Fantasy VII:
Music was sensational and this game started my love for Japanese RPG's for their story driven and highly emotive games. From the minute the music kicks in and you zoom into midgar and attack a few soldiers i was hooked. I have played through this game so many times it beggars belief and can still go back and play it now and enjoy it as if it was my first time through.

Legend of Zelda: A link to the past
The best SNES game i've ever played. Again great music, lots of puzzles and boss battles a plenty. Such great fun and my first introduction to the world of Hyrule, i've played all the others since and this still stands out to me as my favourite.

Silent Hill 2
The creepiest game i've ever played, everytime i heard the siren blow i shuddered. A great story with some pretty good voice acting, fog everywhere and that damn radio going off meant i couldn't play this for too long at a go when i first played it. Oh and the opening music if you let the menu go on for too long is epic.

Super Mario World
No best games list should be without the little italian plumber. This is my favourite just ahead of 3. Classic sidescrolling platformer that knew what it was and did it better than the rest. And music that gets stuck in your head for days. In fact i want to play it now.

GTA III
This game blew my mind at the time. I couldn't belive how big the place was, i could go anywhere (still couldn't swim but hey). So many side missions and things to see and do and a story that would have made a great TV show. And if it wasn't for 9/11 then planes would have been in the game, imagine how much more this would have added to the game if that was the case. Radio stations each had their own flavour and the legend of Lazlow was born. I played this game for days straight and could probably quite easily do the same now (although work might not be happy).

Honourable mentions to Final Fantasy VIII (great story and some of my favourite Uematsu music), Final Fantasy X (i know i'm a fanboy so sue me), Fahrenheit (if only they'd have gone back and given them more time to finish it properly instead of diving head first into chaos), Bioshock (brilliant stuff, and my favourite next gen game so far), Soulblade (if for nothing else but the opening video) and Sonic Adventure 2 (i really enjoyed this and my favourite 3d Sonic game).

I think it was mongols who got the boar bonus? I am a bit ashamed I can't remember as mongols were my favourite civ.

Agreed, everything was just so focused on speed and gameplay and the online community was unrivaled. The graphics were simple yet brilliant and it was a game that literally anybody could play as you didn't have to be great at micromanagement to enjoy it

Seconded....:D

hehe, i found it.

http://aoeism.blogspot.com/2007/12/fast-castle-strategy-crush.html

this was awesome. bang through the feudal age run at people with horsies while they are doing stuff like researching mwahaha.

Ah, the huns. Their no house bonus got me through my early days when I would constantly 'house' myself. I just ahd this mental block where no matter how perfect my build was going, I woudl always forget to build houses.

This was my aoe bible http://www.toaoclan.net/RM-Guide_1850.php

There was another site as well that had the best recordings, but I can't for the life of me remember what it is. I am pretty sure it was Spanish or summit though

The games I remember playing on when I was in my gaming prime on my Amstrad CPC464 were Gary Lineker's Superstar Soccer & The New Zealand Story, spent so many hours on those two games.

What was the name of that 5 a side football game where you could play indoor - was it striker or something?

Tetris - pick it up anywhere anytime and can play it for hours. Still regularly play it. Keeps the brain ticking over.

Theres a good BBC documentary on the history of Tetris floating about. Mentioned in it is something about 'negative motivation'. Apparantly because the blocks keep coming and you have to keep building and the lines keep dissapearing it's very hard to stop playing unless you crash.

The gameboy is where it's at. The infinite spin stuff in the later versions is for wankers.

No Silent hill games which i find strange. I can't believe i forgot about Chrono Trigger.

Also the little bits on the list that made me laugh like one game saying how it was much better than such and such only for that game to appear 20 odd places above it! For example "Kingdom Hearts has the deepest story of any RPG ever, and much better than anything Final Fantasy have produced"
Then 60 odd places up the list "Final Fantasy X is one of the best gaming experience you'll ever have". :wenger:

Theme Hospital

Probably not my favourite game ever, but the first one that sprung to mind. I like strategy games. This was very addictive.

Actually now I think about it Mario Kart on the N64 is probably my favourite ever game.

(I had an urge to play Theme Hospital the other week but couldn't find my old copy. Tried to download it without success, but then again I am a tech retard so I probably fecked something up along the way.

If anyone could explain to me in tech retard language how to do this you might just become my new favourite poster)

Mass Effect, incredibly immersive storyline, great, believable characters, really felt gutted when I had to choose whether to kill Ashley or Kaiden, combat system wasn't bad either, could levitate your enemies and freeze them and shit, can't wait for the sequel.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. It's my favourite game and Splinter Cell my favourite series.

Super Mario 64. Mario in 3D was an amazing new experience after years of 2D Mario.

And to complete the list of 3rd person games, Gears Of War. Forget the hype surrounding Halo, this game is really that epic.

Don't know why but I had a fasination as a kid to the dreamcast games Shenmue 1 & 2. Loved the gameplay which you could play at your own pace, story was excellent and I just like that kind of setting.

In recent memory COD4 really blew me away, before I was never into fps but a friend persuaded me to get it on release day and I have been playing shooters since and nothing has come close to it yet.

GTR2 was/is the other game I can't put down, online racing is awesome and the pure challenge and sense of achievement when you nail a laptime makes it great fun.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time (Probably the greatest of all time)

Super Mario Brothers 3

Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge

Fantastic games. Takes me back...
