The Ballad Of Cristiano Ronaldo - Goodnight, and Good Luck (in your personal life!)

I know I won't.

My emotions towards him have gone from grudging affection to slightly malign indifference.

I don't hate him for leaving but I'm no longer willing to forgive the many personality flaws I was willing to overlook while he had on a United shirt. Still, it's not enough to make me boo him, not after his contribution these last few years.

What if you were at Real Madrid and United had been your favorite club growing up? Would it be wrong for you to want to move there? Wouldnt you get gleefully excited at the thought of playing for United?

It's his personal choice, we're all allowed to have one.

I really dont understand. Honestly, he was never a favorite of mine amongst united players. He's not my kind of player, Rooney is. And i can see how he frurstrates a lot of people. But he's given this club so much. For me that deserves gratitude. I doubt ill be cheering him on at Madrid. Once player leaves united i rarely 'care' about their fortunes unless they were my favorite players while at united. But that has nothing to do with my gratitude and respect for what they achieveed with and for us.

Picture the scene, next season we've just knocked Real Madrid out of the CL Semi-final and our lad Rooney walks upto a dejected looking Ronaldo, shakes his hand and walks off the pitch clapping the stretty.

We have to accept it and so it be. We will find another gem and who knows, might be even stronger.

But I have to say thank you to Ronaldo for all that he's done for us (on the pitch), for the entertainment, the memories, the trophies, etc. He was a brilliant player for us, one of the best, so he deserves my respect.

How Madrid will do now remains to be seen, but I'm sure that United will stay as strong as ever

He was a childhood Benfica fan. Most kids in Portugal probably dream about playing for them. They are a huge club(best club in the 60s) let down by a shite league. The stuff about him growing up as a Real fan always makes me chuckle.

Remembering him for things like that Arsenal goal don't help if you're a tad nervous about the next step, because it is his ability to conjure something from nothing that worries me.

But otherwise, he got what he wanted and Fergie has been through this before.

He didn't grow up a Real fan, but I'm sure he would've watched a lot of the La Liga. And once it became obvious that he was going to be too good for Portugal I'm sure it was the big two in Spain that he 'dreamt' about.

I'd be very surprised if he'd watched many of our games while growing up. Probably wouldn't have had any attachment to us at all until the Sporting-Utd link got put in place and we started showing interest.

ps. Just realised I passed 4000 posts. Wish it could've been in happier circumstances...

Fair enough. Maybe he supported them as a teenager, maybe he never did at all. Either way, i personally dont like getting into the minds of footballers and be overcritical of them. I'm neither here or there when it comes to Ronaldo leaving. As long as United improve it's not going to bother me one bit. But i am grateful for what he's done at this football club.

Does not work like that. Rooney did not grow up to be a United fan either. But it is not difficult to understand why he wanted to move to us. For Latin players , playing for Barca or Real would always be more prestigious.

How old is he? 24? when he was growing up Real weren't a huge massive club - well certainly not a club that played attractive football with 11 superstars. Going back a bit further, when I was a kid, Barca were the biggest club in Spain - Real didn't register on the same scale. But over the last 7-8 years Perez changed things around with his Galatico policy, but believe me, they weren't the club you think they were.

Not sure about that. I think if he were Spanish it could be the case, but he's from Portugal. I think most people are quilty of equating both areas as one big massive nation. It's not. As for Rooney, he wanted to play in the CL and have the chance to win medals.

think his family had some say in this as well....combination of ridiculous money and weather.....

as for Rooney...it is a natural progression to support United from Everton.....the poor man's United..

But he's given this club so much. For me that deserves gratitude.

To be fair, United, and SAF have made it possible to be where he is, he could have gone with a lot of grace. It's him who's been ungrateful.

80 Million is a nice goodbye mind.

Great propaganda piece.

Brilliant player, absolute twat. At times made me ashamed and on others proud to support United. Stopped being one of my favourite players years ago when I was constantly defending him to the hilt against people who said he was an one-trick pony. Now despite all his accolades I really don't care.

He'll go down as a legend mainly because of how supremely talented he is but my memories of him will always be tinged.

good read

I'm actually very much looking forward to El Classico next season, the best players in the world playing against each other and their respective shitty defences lol. And the Galacticos aren't even done being assembled yet :nervous:

Not surprised that you are.

...Why there is so much hate for someone people have never met and who has given you many joyus memories over the past 6 years in incredible...

Is he a cnut? is he a Twat? Do you know him personally? Are you aware of his charity work, good deeds, way he treats autograph hunters etc etc....give it a rest lads..He's not a cnut is he? He a spoiled, rich footballer but one that, under the circumstances is professional, courteous and obliging...but who, afteer 6 years of great service, wants to move on...he hasn't raped your mum or pissed on your kids has he!

Come now Mockney, most of us can only judge footballer by what we see on the pitch. Based purely on his behaviour on the pitch, it's safe to say that Ronaldo is a bit of a dick. Off the pitch we know nothing about him other than he's a raving narcissist.

Combine that with his burning desire to leave Manchester United and play for Real Madrid and surely it's not all that hard to see why some of us are not hugely enamoured with him right now?

What worries me most is how we are going to strengthen the team from the sale proceeds. We are severly lacking in pace right now, and i remember how predictable we were in his absence. Teams defend in numbers and Ronaldo would take 2-3 men away, creating space for the rest to exploit. We need a top class winger and striker, if not, personally i don't think we stand a chance next season if it will to be Valencia and Tevez.

As some one said previously he is a cnut but he was our cnut.

I am sad but my god I'd be heartbroken if it was Rooney, Evra or a player who clearly loves this club for what it is.

Adios Ronaldo, Viva 80 million

80 Million is a nice goodbye mind.

And hes made it possible for us to win bucketloads of trophies and made us the most successful club in the last few years, and helped give Fergie a third brilliant team. It's a two way street. We aren't the only club he could have succeeded at and he's not the only one who could have helped us achieve what we have. But both played a big role in each others success.

So what if he didn't go with a lot of grace? What is a lot of grace? He did brilliantly, the club moves on, both parties should be grateful and look at their own future success.

I don't think he's a cnut at all. Sometimes some of the stuff he did pissed me off but overall he seemed quite likeable to me. I for one am very sad to see him go but with £80m to compensate us I can't complain. I hope he gets a Viva Ronaldo or two if we play Real at some point in the future. Of course what I really hope is that he's a massive flop and they sell him back to us for a fiver but the future? Only God knows.

Great thread Mockney - top class mate & we applaud you for the work you've done there

We'll all miss him of course, but we wont miss all the negative stuff that started last Summer & his negative antics throughout the season. It seemed like this was always gonna happen soon enough. I did however think, that by Fergie staying put he would also - how wrong i was & I suppose many of us!

Life goes on lads & it will be impossible to replace the likes of the "Super Show-Pony" aka Best Player we've ever had since Eric & Bestie. He'll go down in folklore & he deserves our appreciation for all he has done for our special club & family!

If we go out & buy two or three world class players with our new lolly, then that will go some way to easing the disappointment. The likes of Benzema & Ribery would delight me enormously & add another aswell just for that extra cock out moment!

This is a big day in our recent history, we've just made another football team very strong in terms of having that special player who can win a game on his own, but i am sure that United will do all they can to appease the fans & themselves by bringing to the club, players who will fill the void & keep the United winning machine moving onwards & upwards

All the best Ronnie - good luck in life, but may you live to regret even thinking of leaving United & the family that you have left behind because as the old phrase goes: "once you leave United - its only a step down"

 feck Real - you fascist cnuts

I know I know....but I find cnut an horribly over zealous word for someone that gave us a great amount of joy and who, without, we wouldnt have been nearly as successfull. It's almost like he's an opposition player (which he is now I know!!) the way people are going on.

On the pitch Cantona was a dick. Keane was a dick (in fact Keane was a dick off the pitch, so was Best..)

I've heard som describe him as ungrateful. Well I'd counter it by saying people calling him a cnut and twat are the ungrateful ones. He gave you more than you gave him.

It's just a bit odd to me. I know different people have different perogatives. Personally I've never hated any ex united player and I've always wished them well...even Heinze!..And I'm not gonna start now with someone who helped put us in the position we are now

Good luck to him off the pitch, on it I hope he fails miserably. I'm already getting sick of Kaka/Ronaldo/We're the bestest everrr!!! crap coming from Madrid.

Yeah. And he has said in a couple of interviews over the last 13 months that the first European Cup final he watched was in 2003, Milan v Juve at OT. So he missed out on the finals in 1998, 2000 and 2002 which Real won. I don't know but i think a reasonably genuine fan of a club would have been able to have seen at least one of those finals.

The thing is that if he was going to Barcelona he could say that he was joining the current best club side. But the only reason i can see why going to Madrid will be better is the weather(and it'll hardly be the Bahamas for most of the season), perhaps he might be fed up with some of the treatment he has got in England but thats not to say he won't get at least some of this in Spain.

I reckon he'll join a group of players where there'll be less camaraderie. For instance if he encouraged a Spanish player like Casillas or Ramos to get sent off in the World Cup i could see the Spanish players, particularly Raul and Casillas, ostracising him.I doubt the Bernabeu crowd would be as patient with him either. And it won't help that he'll probably see mangerial changes as regular as people change their toothbrushes.
