The Americas Draft, R1: Physio vs Skizzo/Pat 8-8

Considering players at their peak, who will win the match?

It's Carlos Valderrama's turn but he can't be dragged away from the ref, he's somehow got a wad of cash in his hand and is trying to stuff it into the officials pocket. When he's finally pushed towards the penalty spot he just smashes the ball into the middle of the goal without hesitation. Taffarrel looks on in confusion

2-2

Up steps Junior next for Pat/Skizzo and he places it perfectly into the bottom right corner as Higuita sticks to the centre and tries the scorpion save once again - is there no limit to this man's self-belief?

2-3

Steely eyed and focused, Hector Chumpitaz strides towards the penalty spot, he knows this one is crucial for his team. He takes three steps and powers it towards the bottom left corner, BUT TAFFARREL HAS GUESSED CORRECTLY, he gets down quickly to his right and keeps it out. Chumpitaz keeps his composure and cheers on his teammates, this isn't over yet.

2-3

Daniel Bertoni can win it here for Pat/Skizzo, but he looks nervous. Higuita is standing his ground. Bertoni takes 1 step and and hits a delicate ball towards the top corner... Higuita gazes longingly at the ball and wishes his legs weren't currently above his head so he could dive for it. The ball hits the net and team Skizzo/Pat have won the shootout!

Also I chose the players for Pat/Skizzo as they didn't specify who would be taken each pen, doesn't matter though just adds to the 'entertainment' :D

Whew...great work with the pnealties @Jayvin, with a load of  moments to punctuate the churning bowels. Hard luck @Physiocrat. I thought it was all gone for us in the middle of the night when I started posting and promptly started losing votes almost immediately. Chumpitaz was indeed the CB I most wanted Ronaldo to avoid, and Cubillas/Valderrama would have played some lovely stuff together.

@Pat_Mustard

Well played. I also wanted to avoid you. Ronaldo is draft dynamite and Joya was going to be a problem against Zabaleta. The question now is, if Chumpitaz can't stop Ronaldo, who can?

Out of interest did you expect me to start Cubillas in a free roaming left postion with Simeone, Cambiasso and Valderrama in midfield?

Chumpitaz, Passarella and Santamaria are all knocked out.

Ominous signs for the remaining teams.

I haven't really looked at any of the match-ups so far in terms of “can they stop X?” The balance, quality wise, in this draft is very clearly offence > defence, something which is true for nearly every XI we've seen so far.

While I can't speak for anyone else, I do have a feeling the voters keep the above in mind (at least a bit) when looking at the teams: Can they stop Ronaldo? No, they can't – but they're allowed to ship a goal, perhaps several goals, if they're convincing enough as a whole, across the park.

I came up with about 5 different formations you could have played, with Cubillas on the left being one of them I think. I actually suspected you might play Cubillas as a false 9, with that Simeone, Cambiasso and Valderrama midfield behind him.

Nasazzi is out of the equation too. That said, Chumpitaz seemed to be very well received against Ronaldo to me, and the worry for us ahead is that Bochini seemed to get very little traction even against a very offensive-minded midfield. Also, I think the reinforcements are going to do us very little good whatsoever.

I didn't actually think of playing Cubillas as a false 9. That's actually not a bad idea although may not have worked too well with two traditional wingers.

Hard luck @Physiocrat was a heck of a team you put together. That midfield/defense was always going to be a tough nut to crack.

I kept popping in, but didn't want to double up or bombard the thread with extra stuff. Like Pat said, thought I'd wake up to a different result after seeing it slipping away in the middle of the night!
