I really think that selected pool of 16X13/14 players is a winner if you want no restrictions. Otherwise I can guarantee you that there will be easy 10m players available in the end for everyone. Last 4-5 players for everyone will be auction free affair pretty much defeating the purpose of auction all together

Interesting idea I think. Also, how about auctioning sets of ten (or whatever) players picked randomly (but in proportions of gk/defense/midfield/forwards) by the game host from an unrevealed pool? I think that will be plenty of fun, if not for this draft, maybe in the future.

I reckon we should give the no-restrictions idea a go. As someone else stated if everyone has big names it doesn't unbalance it. The way to win will be to craft a well balanced but tactically flexible side.

Also the stating the three year peak could well shake things up a little in the match debates

Definitely! The reason for the all-time draft was that it hasn't been done in so long that it would be very interesting to see which players has risen in rank from being part of drafts. Like said it does pose its own difficulties and it isn't as easy as one may think to create a team even with the quality available.

I will evaluate what we do when Theon flags in, maybe we reset the draft completely so all the time-limits are brought in to play. After all they are what makes the draft really interesting and fun tactically.

I think when managers put a request for a player up, the organisers allocate the minimum starting bid for them. Would stop unreal players going for pennies later on.

This is a fair point.

The potential problem with having an unlimited pool in an auction draft is this: You can, in theory, splash 200 mill on four GOATs and then fill in the blanks with...what? Well, actually bloody good players – at ten mill a pop.

With a restricted pool you pay for such extravaganzas with having to field no-marks in several positions – not so with an unlimited pool.

Some sort of minimum bid for a defined set of GOATs might be in order, i.e. 100 mill (not half that) for yer Pelés.

I believe doing it in rounds will be helpful, go GKs first then fullbacks then centrebacks,etc. Everyone pms two-three players to the gamemod and we can bid on them.

I see where you are coming from, it's why I have no interest whatsoever in these auction drafts. With a large enough pool you could get an almost flawless team for 10M a pop with a good sprinkling of stars... then bank on adding more of those later facing less competition. Do you have rollover budgets here as well? If so saving first, while risking an early exit, probably wins you the whole thing if you get through.

That said, same rules for everyone so you can't really complain when spending twice as much on a player doesn't seem to give you twice the result. The deltas between players in such a large pool are never going to be more than 20-30% differences if we are honest/unbiased.

Note: haven't even read the rules, I suppose there will be some constraints which would make some more valuable, e.g. George Best was head and shoulders the best player to have in the All-time draft because you didn't just get a GOAT in his role but one that also didn't stop you picking anyone else other than Pat Jennings or Danny Blanchflower. Compare that to paying tonnnes of money for Maradona when you can also go for Messi, Di Stéfano, and so many others.

I agree with Crappy here - I'm sure that in the first auction draft were picking up well-known, quality players for peanuts at the end just because others had completed their teams. That wasn't really an issue in the British/Irish draft due to the smaller pool IIRC.

That seems like a necessity for sure.

I don't really know what should be done here, but would there be any merit in the draftmaster and some neutrals picking a list of, say, 80 players for auction, then allowing each manager maybe 2-4 nominations each afterwards?
