The 3pm U.K. Blackout

The 3pm blackout is on its last legs IMO.
Rightly or wrongly will be scrapped in next few years as clubs will be allowed to sell TV Season Tickets including all their own League matches.

You see numerous PL club jackets / coats being worn at FL and Non-league games.

Yes the 3pm blackout needs reviewing.

But to say it wouldn't have an impact is a nonsense!

What would you rather as a non-league club?

Those 5 extra fans in the ground at £10 a pop or a % the multi million pound tv deal?

it’s going to happen and as has been proven time and again, these clubs need money, not fair weather fans.

What makes you think these non-league clubs will get a slice of the TV money pie?

SKY & others have been paying big bucks to the FA for PL TV coverage for over 30 years & as far as I am aware non-league haven't seen any of that money in that time unless a PL club buys one of their players, correct me if I am wrong.

I think they will have to give a share to the football pyramid to finally kill the 3pm blackout. The reason being that the blackout exists primarily for the benefit of the non-league/football pyramid in the first place.

They’ve certainly never bothered before though you’re right, look at Bury.

Maybe we just have a system with so many pro / semi pro teams, that it’s become unsustainable to maintain the back out.
For all the will in the world, I support Leicester, I’m not paying £12 to go and watch my local team (who I played for at one time) play.

It the country had an idea on how many were using VPNs, or illegal streaming, I think these numbers might start to stack up to scrap it.

The sooner the Premier League gets its own streaming service, the better.

this is probably separate Fred worthy, for which I can’t do at the moment. But it will be interesting to know where each of us are based, and what would you pay for a full UK football, any game, any time, package. Where you could also go back and watch any game, or highlights.

I would probably be prepared to pay £20 a month for that alone, but I would be cancelling my Sky Sports. U.K. based

I think it maybe more likely that premier league games are no longer scheduled at 3pm on a Saturday. So few are now anyway.

The tricky part for the Premier League is ensuring they get the same money or more that they get from Sky etc.

Sooner or later it will happen but right now a segment of football fans are propping archaic limited television subscriptions.

They see millions of it every year. The national leagues were given over £12m for the next three years. There is also funds set up for community stuff and stadiums. The stadium fund this year was something like £30m. Since 2000 the PL has given almost £200m to fund lower league stadiums.

Longer term, the fans in the ground because without fans there, football is meaningless

people will always go and support their local team. i don't buy this notion that if 3pm games were available on tv then nobody would go to the games. arguably, if non-top 6 teams were shown on tv more, the more those teams' profiles will be raised and potentially more revenue streams identified. the current model of maximising profit from the top 6 and sod the rest might have been ok in the 90s but with the advent of streaming and mobile content, the whole enterprise needs a complete overhaul.

This feels the best answer for me. Let the football league and below have that slot to themselves.

I think my desire to watch games would disappear if we had no fans attending. The matches without them during lockdown were greatly diminished.

I loved it. Never watched more football in my life.

The perception that the black out is to accommodate non league clubs is a poor argument in my opinion. I don’t go to non league football because the tickets are too expensive for the standard of football. Ditto for the food and drink as well. My local team wants £15 for game entry, they are two leagues below the conference.

Pretty sure there’s far better ways of supporting the football pyramid than a restriction on live games. The fact is, they are no longer able to control who sees these games because they want to sell them live to every other country but the UK. This simply needs to change. I wouldn’t ever want to watch a “Everton vs Soton” before anyone in the UK was able to - legally - but I could because I no longer live in England. That’s so fecked up.

I've noticed City v Leeds is on sky sports today at 3 pm what's that all about ?

Maybe something to do with the coronation? Because of it there's no early kick-off today so perhaps the game intended to be televised at 12:30 now gets shown at 3 pm?

Possibly, it's strange to see though all the same.

Had to be rescheduled from a Sunday because of City's CL committments, couldn't be played at 12.30 or 5.30 because of the coronation & police resourcing. Not sure if there's lower league games today either?

I'm surprised they allowed any lowly, dirty football to be played on this most royal and magnificent day.

Need to keep the plebs distracted with something while their betters concentrate on more important matters.

Just saw the schedule for the weekend and realised that United & Liverpool are both on the Saturday 3pm slot. What a joke this is

The only positive in this instance is Liverpool don't play before us. Would be a nightmare if they won before we play and we were sat in 5th when we play later in the day.

Every little helps at this stage, we don't need to give our fragile players any more pressure.

We don't get a lot of them though, last week was the first one we have had for months, certainly beats a midweek 8PM game.

No issue with the 3pm blackout. It should stay and not every game should be on TV. Protecting lower leagues is also important

Only thing I'd change is making it so any non Saturday 3pm game that gets moved should be made available for TV.

It feels a little silly to blackout 3pm games for premiership games.

every club has more fans than their capacity so if all clubs sold out the rest won’t be going anyways. It also punishes those who are unable to get to games maybe for financial or even medical reasons.

also if yas all look back over this season there has been a lot more 3pm games with one of “the top 6” playing supposedly it’s to do with the deals in Middle East better suited time wise for audience.

Removing it will simply give fans a legitimate way to watch what they're going to illegally stream any way.

Match day threads here for the rare non-televised United game aren't full of comments from UK-based United fans talking about how they're going to the shops and catching up with Gary and the boys on Match of the Day later. It's 2023 the only people who think the 3pm blackout is either needed or effective are either delusional or obtuse.

Looking at the games on offer at 3pm on Saturdays it's often the runt of the litter; matches the television companies haven't picked. You can't have much faith in lower league fans to think the entire structure of English football is at risk because Palace vs Brentford is on the telly.

Are there any statistics out there to show how many fans truly go see non-league games because their team isn’t on TV?

Also, people who received fines or lovely visits from police due to streaming is absolutely ridiculous. Especially if it’s 3pm kick offs. I can see why broadcasters would not want people streaming games for free when they should be paying for it. But the 3pm games aren’t broadcasted, who exactly are we stealing money from if we stream these?

It’s like accusing someone of stealing my beautiful Ferrari which I never even had in the first place.

Also, these goal shows we see on BBC, Sky and BT for 3pm kick offs…who are they for?

Shouldn’t everyone be down their local team instead of sitting inside watching people watch games which aren’t allowed to be shown….

Yeah the Blackout was devised in the 60's and it was effective for a long time but that time has passed. I'd say for at least a decade now anyone who wants to watch a 3pm KO is watching them and anyone who prefers to go down to a lower league match is doing that vs streaming a PL game (which these days is ridiculously easy, 5-10 minutes on Google and you'll find one).

Never understood those shows to be honest, Soccer Saturday a football programme that lasts 6 hours but shows no actual football. Like a really long Youtube reaction video.

I've been to quite a lot of non-league and lower league games this year including Millwall, St Albans, Dulwich, Leyton Orient, Charlton etc. None of them had any problems filling up their stadiums, no matter what time the kick off was.
