Terrible films and box office disasters

Lot of these films are among my favourites. Surprised to hear they weren't successful.

The worst film I've ever seen was Lost in Space, terrible plot, script, action, acting not even the charms of mimi rogers and heather graham could save the film.

I only managed 15 minutes of Tomb Raider before switching it off too, despite being stuck on a plane for 9 hours with nothing else to do.

Lost in Space? Really? I though that was good.

The worst film I ever saw was Lady In The Water (think that's what it's called!). About some fecking woman who lands in some guy's pool in his back garden, I don't know whether she's supposed to be a fairy or a mermaid but anyways....it's fecking shit so avoid at all costs

Utter rubbish but there are far far worse films.

Unbelievably.

Sounds high to me.

And films now often claw their way to profitability through worldwide and DVD sales etc

The Golden Compass didn't do that well in the US but took a shed load of dosh elsewhere even before DVD sales.

The business model is that 70% will lose you money, but the odd big hit makes it all worthwhile. It's simply impossible to tell up front whether a totally new film will get the money back or not, even if it's of a very high quality, so this is how they do it. The games industry is going the same way. The problem is, even if it's poor, or received poorly, it still costs a silly amount of money to make it. Quality is not something that is easily defined when the budgeting is done.

I liked Last Action Hero when I saw it I was 8 though

Thing is when announcing budgets, a lot of films dont mention the marketting, so a lot don't make profit. As a lot of the money goes to the cinema's as well (something like 50% first week and 70% after the first three).

Passion of the christ? I know it made good money, but it was a huge pile of shit.

Not as bad maybe as dirty dancing.

I thought the joke was that even a monumental flop such as Waterworld makes money. Not neccessarily at the US box office but through foreign markets, sindication and video releases, films almost always make back their money.

(I actually think that Waterworld is quite good fun. And I really like Baron Munchausen)

The Boondock Saints cost 6 mil to make and only made 30 k, sure it's more than made it up on DVD sales

Spot on. I think she was a sea nymph or something. Terrible film.

I've seen that mentioned as the worst film of all time.

Re. Heaven's Gate -

Yes a huge financial disaster, but not that bad a film in retrospect. Way too long, Cimino's egomania after The Deerhunter and making a Western at a time when it was a kiss of death....but nowhere near being the worst film of all time in my opinion.

Definitely. Not to mention t-shirts and that sort of thing.

If you liked Boondock Saints, there's a documentary about the director called Overnight, which is basically about how big of an ass he is. Interesting little doc.

1) Stealth
2) Cutthroat Island
3)
4)
5) Around The World In 80 Days
6) Pluto Nash

Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot

Utterly terrible and I think it lost quite a bit of dosh.

And Showgirls was really really bad. It also cost $45 mill to make and recouped less than half of that.

And have we mentioned Gigli? Cost $54 mill and took only $4mill.

Hudson Hawk. That was a real stinker.

Cost $65 mill and only took $17mill

And have we mentioned Battlefield Earth yet? That lost over $50 million.

Shame :)
