Tennis Thread 2011

Efficient match from Nadal. First event I've seen where he's played both singles and doubles that the benefits of his doubles match are showing in singles. He's been posting some very good net stats in his last three matches.

Federer-Djokovic looks like it could be good, aggressive start from both players.

As expected Djoko gets the break. Fed with some typical shocking shanks. Djoko is in god like form though and if he wins today I expect him to win tomorrow as well.

Djoko is schooling Fed out there. I dislike Federer but it's sad watching his game right now.

Strange 3rd set. Djoko got the early break but failed to consolidate and double faulted to give Fed the break back.

Fed in the next game is 40-15 up and goes into typical error mode and then HE double faults to give Djoko the break back.

Djoko is 16-0 in ATP matches this year

Make that 17. Game set match Djoko. Fed's game was really really poor. Far too many unforced errors. Djoko really has Feds number right now. This is his 4th or 5th victory back to back.

The quality of tennis in the Nadal DelPo match was far better than this actually. Nadal Djokovic should be an interesting final. I hope Nadal can finally win a Hard Court Masters Series title, it's been a long time since his last one! But with Djoko in the form he is in, it won't be easy.

Anyone watching Nadal - Djokovic? I'm flipping between it and Valencia / Sevilla. Nadal a break up now, but Djoko with a break point in return

hopefully djokovic carries this form into the clay court season.

is he more popular in serbia than vidic? Just curious.

I think he is. The thing is Nole is embraced by whole Serbia while Vidic is supported by all Red Star fans and the majority of all non-Partizan fans. Luckily most Serbs support Red Star and not that other piece of crap Partizan garbage.

Brilliant yet again from Djokovic. 18-0 for the season and easily the best player this season.

As for Nadal, I was delighted he even made it to the final and took a set off Djoko in his tournament back. And now the Clay Court season starts

Anyway as Nadal said, "I lost to one of the greatest"

Well done Novak!

Wheres that tosser who laughed at me years ago for saying that Djokovic could be one of the best? I think it was Count_Duckula..

He's always had it in him, but stalled for 2 years, now he is simply a monster.

Btw, great speech by Novak and also respect to Nadal. Surely the most humble player there is.

Have to admit, I was one of the doubters. He really has taken his game to a new level. Fantastic for the sport, don't think men's tennis has ever been this good. It's just a pity the game's become so one dimensional.

The talent was always there but it the lack of physical and mental strength that was preventing him from reaching the heights he could. I've often called him a bottler and I think it's fair to say he's not one anymore. He's a different player now and a joy to watch. Can he adapt his game to win titles on Clay and Grass though? That should be interesting to watch. As much as I like Novak I hope he turns a bit rubbish for the next few months :)

I must be the only one who thought Djokovic himself wasn't that great until Nadal's serve went AWOL and he started posting Murray like numbers? His first serve % for the 2nd set was 23% :wenger:and 48% for the entire match which was just bizarre. But credit to Djokovic, still undefeated.

But if anything, yesterday's match showed if Nadal is fit, I don't think Djokovic will pose as much of a threat on clay as people have been saying.

Yep Djoko was not great yesterday but in general he's been awesome this season. I barely remember him dropping any sets all season now. Last night Nadal kind of threw it away imo. After he'd got the break back in the second I expected him to win it but then his game just fell apart.

Tbh I wish he had been tested more. Getting 2-3 qualifiers is not good enough practice to play the red hot Djokovic right now, especially after being out for 2 months.

As for Clay I think Nadal will be King yet again. He has far too much for anyone on that surface. Novak included. Infact I think Gulbis and Almagro last year have given him harder fights than pretty much anyone on clay.

Yeah those were my thoughts too, right from the first set when he was serving well and getting Djokovic into those long rallies, it always felt like the match was in his hands.

The first part is exactly why I think Djokovic won't threaten Nadal as much as people are saying. It was slow HC and Nadal at the level he's been through out the week was still able to keep up with Djokovic till his serve disappeared, how much more on clay when the mentality and the clay game are both there? Djokovic might take one of the clay masters as I'm hoping Nadal won't play all three because of the braindead tournament spacing by the ATP.

Well Nadal has points to defend at Monte Carlo and Rome and Madrid I think. Not sure about Rome but he definitely won Monte Carlo and Madrid last year. I'm sure he'll skip Hamburg since that's not too important and I hope he skips the 250 points Barca Open which he competes in for sentimental reasons that anything else. 2 or 3 Masters and Rolland Garros is the maximum he should do.

However with him having played barely 2-3 tournaments all season I can see him playing more.

He's defending all 3. He skipped Barca last year and promised he'd be back to play there this year, no idea if he still plans on doing that. He doesn't play Hamburg a lot anymore. You're right that he hasn't played much this year, so he might just play them all anyways. Ideally, I'd hope he'd skip Madrid; dumb spacing, high altitude, not really worth it.

Novak is playing some great stuff so far this season, good for him he is good player to watch

Yup I really hope he doesn't play Madrid. I don't think he wanted to last year either but with the strict ATP rules he was forced to. And plus if he skips it he'll lose a lot of points so might as well play it I guess. Match fitness and all that.

Anyway hope he definitely skips Barcelona and Hamburg.

He was pretty awful at getting anything off Nadals second serve - which isn't good enough.

However, once he stepped it up he was hitting winners from everywhere.

Djokovic has actually given Nadal some wars on clay and this is back when he didn't have this supreme confidence he is carrying. I wouldn't be surprised if Djokovic was able to beat Nadal on clay, though make no mistake Nadal is favourite.

Djokovic has given Nadal some hard fights on clay but I'm not sure he'll even make it to too many finals to be in a position to play Nadal. There are far too many players on clay who can take out Djoko, Murray and the likes. Djoko will find it far harder to steamroll opponents the way he does on hard courts nowadays.

My dads cinemas will be showing the wimbledon semi's and finals on the big screen in 3D this year - think I might go watch the final there at least. Sub Strawberries and Cream for Ben and Jerrys Berry Nice and Vanilla Toffee Crunch. Winner.

Which was why I said I based my presumption that Djokovic wouldn't trouble Nadal much on clay on the former's showing in that final as that was meant to be Djokovic at his peak, it was on a hardcourt and Nadal though not playing that well himself was still handling him comfortably until his serve and game fell apart.

If Murray's gonna back up each slam final loss with these really bad slump in form, he might as well stop playing to get to them.

Andy Murray

This is downright embarrassing!

On a disturbing afternoon in the Florida sunshine, Andy Murray played without belief, poise or anything approaching any semblance of authority, turning in one of the most horrific performances of his career to lose his opening appearance to Alex Bogomolov Jr, an American qualifier ranked 118 in the world.

And this on his favorite courts. He should just retire from the claycourt season coming up. Pathetic display from him. How can he react so badly to defeat?!

He's not won a single set of tennis at ATP level since the semi vs Ferrer in Australia!

He just wants you to believe he's playing bad.

Somdev beat Raonic on Friday which is rather surprising considering how good Raonic has been this season. Hopefully Som can break into the top 50 soon

Haven't seen much of him. Does he stand a chance of going deep in a grand slam? I noticed he performed quite well against Nadal last week.

 Some laughable results so far in this tourney. Roddick
He was slightly injured wasn't he?

Going deep? Maybe in a Hard Court Slam because most of his good results have come on the hard courts. But I can't see him go further than the 4th Round at best for a while. But he's steadily improving and has beaten Maliise (twice), Baggy and Raonic now this season and gave Nadal a tough fight.

Hmm...that Aussie Open loss has clearly destroyed Murray's confidence.

I said during the Australian Open he will not win it and that he is overrated and over hyped. I still don't think he is good enough to win a grand slam on his own, meaning he will win something only when some major seed is knocked out or injured.
