Tennis 2023

Embarassing really, doesn't that mean she's had around the same amount of coaches as Murray has had over his whole career now?!

In fairness, I think this is mainly down to the length of her recovery period from the current injures but yeah, the jumping around between coaches doesn’t seem to be working for her.

They're all trying to sleep with her maybe.

Sinner out after his opponent saved two match points.

Fokina looking unbelievable one moment and totally shite the next. Should've won this set comfortably.

Novax looks absolutely knackered. Luckily for him it's s straightforward route to the semis.

Belarus’ Sabalenka skips French Open news conference after Ukraine war questions (Sportsnet)

I don't want to linger on the geopolitical part, but can someone explain to me why Sabalenka gets a favorable treatment by not being fined when Naomi Osaka got the book thrown at her just 2 years ago? I still remember the WTA openly shitting on Osaka by imposing her $15,000 in fines and then threatening her with disqualification because she skipped news conferences. Why the double standards by the same authorities?

I think they acknowledged they got it wrong with Osaka and are trying to be more accommodating of players’ mental states.

One is being constantly asked questions that have nothing to do with tennis and is being confronted about something she has no control over. I think it is far more fair to allow that person too not visit press conferences unless journalists start asking questions that relate to the sport.

Is the press conferences rule stupid? Yes. But then again I presume this adds to the money they receive for this tournament as media companies pay more. For Osaka, I felt it was that she didn't want to discuss her tennis performances and that's a different issue to Sabalenka.

Swiatek double bagling in 50 minutes

Also, how is it that the French somehow constantly manages to avoid the dream final, get stuffed with Novak and Alcaraz being set for the semi. Typical shit, and that's hoping no one plays spoiler to it like last year, when you had the 3 of them on the same side. They need to fix this shit when it's not 1-2 seeds!

So you are suggesting rigging the draw?

Medvedev ending up in the Top 2 seeds ruins the draw every year. He really needs to be banned from RG for the sake of healthy draws.

That's what 'fix this shit' suggests, every other sport does it.

But I mean, we've never truly had the dream final at a Roland Garros, unlike everywhere else recently. The closest true challenges peak Nadal got were in 2005, 2011 and 2013 - 2 ended up as semi's in classic somewhat forgotten matches, but would remembered far more if they were finals and the other was spoiled by Federers greatest ever clay performance against peak clay Novak.... then somehow Rafa, Novak and Alcaraz all on the same side last year, so you were getting a bum final regardless, and again this year, Novak-Alcarav on the same side.... in what could potentially be the only time Alcarav will actually match up against them at a decent alignment between where their actually peaks are.

2006 and 2014 were as close as we've got, at least in the big 3 era. It's obviously no ones fault really nor should it be fixed, I'm just playing.

Mind you, it can't be worse than the eternal tease of getting a Nadal-Federer match at the US Open only to fall short at the most hysterical hurdles, such as Tommy Robredo in straight sets

Well, perhaps the only way to fix this "legitimately" is to do dynamic seeding. Wimbledon actually does it. Ignore the ranking and have "per court type seeding". Even then the chances that 1 and 2 make it till the end are nowhere near 100%. With Nadal aging and almost retiring, and Novak aging, they simply don't care about ranking. I am confident Novak will not reach number 1 again. He might grab a slam or two but reaching number 1 will be a very tall task. We shall see what level of consistency Alcaraz reaches... There is a chance that we do not get many repeated slam finals in the future. Apart from Alcaraz I don't see a single player out there who can be consistent. Maybe Rune? Rune vs Alcaraz rivalry would be nice. Medvedev, Zverev, Tsitsipas are old and I think they are actually all about to decline.

On the evidence of this clay season Rune has a bigger claim to being in the dream final than Djokovic.

Never heard of guy Djokovic is playing against. Early signs look like he'll do well to win more than a couple of games each set.

He's also won his first three matches, all in 5 sets.

Easy work for the GOAT so far.

Yeah good for him that he's able to play short matches at his age. How do you think he and Alcaraz will match up if they both reach the SF? I really hope Nole wins #23 but jesus this kid is good.

Novak will need help from Musetti and Stef. They need to expose something and tire the guy. Alcaraz has weapons and creativity like no other. If Alcaraz makes to semi without much effort against Musetti and Stef then it will take exceptional performance from Novak. Solid performance will not be enough.

Well your response perfectly describes what I'm looking at right now.. The only thing going through my mind is who is going to stop this guy in the next 10 years?

I am so ready for this semi-final, which means it's almost certain Tsitsipas is playing the game of his life.

What a ridiculous decision. The ball was not struck in anger or distress. The other players were not qualified to call for the disqualification.

Marie Bouzkova and Sara Sorribes Tormo laughed after their opponents were disqualified!

Japan's Miyu Kato fired a cross-court shot towards the ball girl between points, striking her on the shoulder. With the young girl distressed, Kato was initially given a warning by the umpire.

However, a protest by opponents Marie Bouzkova and Sara Sorribes Tormo led to match being abandoned with Kato and her Indonesian partner Aldila Sutjiadi disqualified.

What a joke and embarrassing from the two asking for a DQ.

Perhaps more political than tennis but I don’t get Svitolina’s policy of not shaking hands with any Russian.

Kasatkina has been heavily critical of Russian politics in respect of the war, has been brave enough to come out publicly and hasn’t been back to Russia since the war according to reports (and arguably would be in danger if she did so). Svitolina herself said how brave she has been.

Surely that’s exactly the type of person, particularly as a Ukrainian, to shake hands with? Instead, Kasatkina was apparently booed off court after their match yesterday when there was no handshake.

Possibly the right decision looking at the replay but the opponents demanding it is beyond pathetic.

I agree.

djokovic should be on 23 for the same reason

I generally do agree but I also respect Svitolina's stance.

On the latter, I think that's more on the crowd. The crowd at RG are quite quick to boo players, which is a shame for Kasatikina but I would like to think that she won't take it to heart.

Eh? It was a ridiculously gentle shot. What replay have you seen?

A couple on Twitter. It wasn’t hit overly hard but it was still a fairly normal paced shot which hit the ball girl full on the shoulder without bouncing. Understandably, she was shaken up as a result. Given the rule is that you are risk of DQ if you hit someone negligently (which she obviously did unfortunately and it does not require it to be hit in anger), I think it was probably correct.

It was crazily harsh, the ballgirl just had balls in her hand already and was slow to react. The ball wasn't hit in anger or recklessly.
One level it's funny their opponents were such unsporting shits, but losing all their prize money and ranking points for that is farcical.

Full on on the shoulder?! Absolutely no way she was injured from that, and to be disqualified from such a big tournament for something as innocuous as that is ridiculous. They were literally knocking the ball back to her! It's a farce.

Rules are rules. Novak learned it as well. What can you do, life goes on.

It is crazy that a minor ball hit is equal punishment as what Shapovalov did. Shapovalov almost took an eye out of the main umpire.
