Medvedev and Novak have similar personalities, they can be a bit arrogant, a bit condescending.
I dunno about this.

Medvedev is just a general asshole, despite that he doesn't seem to think he is one. He's also quite the narcissist. He's insulted line judges, ball kids, the crowd, had a dq for apparent racist remarks and tried his best to intimidate both players and umpires in the past.
He's not squeaky clean, no matter how he tries to portray himself.

If we ignore his idiotic and ignorant views, when Djokovic first burst onto the scene, he was a likeable guy. Very humble, like Nadal.
Somewhere around 2013-14, he morphed into this character with supreme arrogance and an obsession with being the greatest seemed to completely devour his former laid back character.
Around then is when he became very unlikeable to me.

What makes Nadal such a great role model is that nothing about him has changed. He is still just as humble and grounded as he was at the start of his career.
Whether that is because he has always had a step in the door of retirement, and will continue to be there, I'm not sure.
It does always seem like Rafa is just grateful to be playing tennis for another year though, as if he's always expecting his career to end at any given moment.

It’s not a generalization just an observational fact though? You just have to watch any match involving Fedal against the rest that has something hanging on it during Wimbledon/Australian Open/US Open to see this, and this rarely happens anywhere else in the world when these guys play.

It happened in Madrid when the entire crowd was with Nadal and Djokovic could be heard telling the crowd to suck on a specific body part. It has nothing to do with English speaking countries and I'm not sure why you'd think there's a greater bias towards a German-Swiss speaking Swiss and a Spaniard in English speaking countries than anywhere elsewhere.

Federer and Nadal have always gotten cheered more than Novak because the crowd finds the latter unlikeable. Similar to how Medvedev was jeered in this latest slam. Boris Becker used to repeatedly talk about how it bothered Novak that he didn't get the same adulation the other two got, but his demeanor, personality, and compartment makes him less likeable in the eyes of many fans across the world (and that isn't specific to English speaking countries).

I think you're overestimating Nadal's support to be honest. Wacth Nadal vs Djokovic in the 2019 AO final or when they played in the Wimbledon SF in 2018.

Even with Medvedev, in the USO final against Nadal, I think the crowd played a part in his come back when 2 sets down, as they really got behind him.

He may have had more support in those matches, I don't remember but it wasn't obvious and certainly nothing like yesterday, which was a bit of an exception.

What a great match yesterday. First match I've watched in years. Only the crowd to complain about, they seemed to be at the wrong event.

Think I might go back to watching tennis more regularly.

Djokovic to win French Open and Wimbledon. Hope the crowd boos so loud until they all pass out. Djokovic then to smile and send them all his love. Later on in the press conference to confirm French and English fans are the best!

Now on to #22

Then Federer and Djokovic going all out at Wimbledon. I'm still holding out hope Federer will reach a good level again. Maybe even a Murray run like old times. Could be the last tournament those 4 compete in together again

In that specific case, in Madrid, the support for Nadal is obviously overwhelming, but I am not sure if in another part of the world it would be so clear.
Most of the time, it seems that people want one more set and support who is losing.
Years ago the Federer Nadal rivalry became mythical. I have clear images in my head of his first match, of each defeat of one and the other, but the same does not happen to me with Djokovic, even when Toni Nadal pointed out that he would be the great tennis star, when he was very young.
Nadal was very striking, with his long pants, scratching his ass and running like crazy. His fight against the invincible was intriguing and unexpected due to his style.
Perhaps no one expected a third to join the party and didn't get all the attention he deserved.
And then there was the Wimbledon final in 2008, which in my opinion already made a big difference.

Hope this prediction goes as well as yours about Medvedev destroying Nadal.

He really needs to better schedule his clay season this year. He needs to let go of emotion and dump one of Madrid or Barcelona. Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Rome are more than enough warmup.

I’d just love Djokovic to be met with genuine hatred and disgust at the next three GS, the audience to create a truly hostile atmosphere, all their fears and frustrations projected right onto the court.

Why? He clearly doesn't want that. Look how much the crowd support meant to him at the USO final. It's a bit of a bizarre thing to wish for when it's clearly something Djokovic doesn't want.

It’s irrelevant what Djokovic wants. The majority view in the Caf is that he is a cnut, arsehole, idiot, liar, pathetic etc. Surely a person with such a character doesn’t deserve any better than being met with utter contempt and maximum hostility, right?

How does it matter what the Caf wants when we're talking about what you want for him? If you think he's done no wrong, why would you want that hostile reception?

Wait, we'll bring you a handkerchief to wipe away your tears. What a way to try to play the victim.
I don't think the opinions are that bad. Obviously his anti-vaccine position has played a trick on him but before he seemed very popular and probably the favorite from a technical tennis point of view. Even he has a lot of support on twitter.
I have nothing specifically against him, but if it helps him lose, boos are welcome, even they can throw eggs and tomatoes

It'll work the other way actually. He'll just channel the hate to win.

I have no idea what you mean with your first couple of sentences. I was being serious. Djokovic's appaling behavior has put lives on risk! Wasn't he deported from Australia for exactly that reason? Also the BBC confirmed that he lied about his positive Covid tests! So what kind of reception do you think such a character should receive?

the first sentences are clear. It seems that the treatment of Djokovic bothers you and you are acting as he is the victim, or at least that is what I understand when you write this:
"The majority view in the Caf is that he is a cnut, arsehole, idiot, liar, pathetic etc. Surely a person with such a character doesn’t deserve any better than being met with utter contempt and maximum hostility, right?"
I am not sure if you're on his side, if your complaints are like "the world against Serbia", if you're being sarcastic...

Hold on a sec. I said:

"The majority view in the Caf is that he is a cnut, arsehole, idiot, liar, pathetic etc. Surely a person with such a character doesn’t deserve any better than being met with utter contempt and maximum hostility, right?"

What's so controversial about my statement?

I have not said that it is controversial.
I answered according to what I understood and it seemed to me that you were being sarcastic and playing the victim, that is why I asked you what exactly your position is because I am lost.
Like Jovic, for example,

do you think the world is against Serbia?.
(I guess you are serbian?).
Do you honestly think he's an idiot and deserves hatred, or do you think the posts against him are wrong?.
Personally I think he is not, although should listen to Pepe Imaz a little less

It's still amazing and baffling to me to think about what Rafa just did yesterday. I've watched the guy for 17 years and I still don't understand it.

However, looking forward, outside of the exhausting big 3, I'm really hoping Thiem makes a comeback.
It does seem like winning a GS took the fight out of him, though.

Same, he's been missed. Wrist injuries can be difficult to come back from, so really do hope he can come back and not have any further setbacks.

Believe he should be making his return next month on clay in South America.

That and his gf yes

Medvedev's actual speech in his post match presser was great. Clearly raw emotions rising to the surface after a tough loss.

Strange thing to get excited by.
