The right decision just took far too long to get there.
Neither side comes out of it with any credit.

Nadal has a chance now. Federer semi retired. Djokovic having his issues. I'd love to see him win this tournament.

Ahhhhhh so nice to wake up to such great news.

Hopefully the three year ban stays and he never wins an AO again.

For Nadal to win it the 2nd time would be great but I don't see it. Medvedev and Zverev are too strong right now.
However, Nadals big hope should be that French Open will require vaccination as well, which would give him an excellent shot at winning there.

The French already said they will grant Novaxx exemption

Let’s hope things change and we go through this again
Perhaps he will just get vaccinated?

Almost certainly not getting into Australia or USA without it ... Nadal (if fit) will be favourite for the French

So if he really does want to set the grand slam record probably getting a vaccine is going to be his only way... plus many more issues like his Australia (non) entry will probably see sponsors start to cut ties or at least reduce the money

He ain’t getting vaccinated, no chance.

The interesting thing, which I hadn’t really thought about until now, is that his whole team must be vaccinated, as they were practising with him when he was released from detention first time around. So for all the talk of the echo chamber around him, his closest professional contacts have been willing, at the very least, to get vaccinated and he hasn’t seen anything in that to make him change his mind.

It wouldn't be hard for him to fake a vaccination
It wouldn’t be good enough for him. I think he wants to compete and the world to know he isn’t vaccinated (hence the gloating post that ended up costing him). At least that’s what I think, to be fair that is pure speculation on my part.

A lot of bitter people here.

Australia have been hilariously bad here and should be embarrassed.

Most of us have probably had our last vaccine now anyway, so we're months away from being at the same level of immunity as the unvaccinated, yet we treat them like neo nazis... I think it's pretty blooming odd. But hey, whatever makes you happy.

Lots to unpack.

What’s your thoughts on the vaccine hesitant players who took the vaccine against their best instincts because they were told they had to? You think it’s fair on them that Novak gets to ignore the rules and get his way anyway?

I dunno, I don't really care. Australia should've handled this far better, that's all I can take from the situation. The anti Novak sentiment is bizarre though, don't you think?

I think the difference is if it wasn't for the previous infection exemption that TA pushed for, he was willing to sit out of the tournament.

I'd say the pro Novak (considering the circumstances and his actions) are infinitely more bizarre.

Glad they thought him a lesson.

So he faked an infection to get in? That looks really bad on Australia.

How is it bizarre he's utterly detestable

It's bizarre to hate on a guy who knowingly walked around and exposed multiple people while he was positive with covid and lied on his visa application forms?

As far as we know he didn't fake anything he just caught Covid and that was effectively his way to play. He took advantage of a loophole, but one that was created by Tennis Australia, as shown with the Czech player and other official.

Oh right you think he actually had COVID, went maskless to a junior tennis event, had photos with kids and parents and then had a photo shoot the next day without telling the photographer and his team about his infection status?

Wow, that’s so much worse for Australia.

Is the lesson "the Australian government are incompetent"?

Honesty, I really don't get the high horse comments all over here. It's a bit weird..

Have you ever considered that people are genuinely disgusted at his actions and are relieved he doesn’t get to carry on doing whatever he likes regardless?

I'm just going with the narrative we've been told and whichever way you look at it he acted recklessly in regards to his actions after he was tested and notified of his positive result.

Djokovic doesn't come out of this well, mainly because of his actions with his positive test, but the Australian officials also had their part to play in this shambles.

The way I see it is, he shouldn't have been allowed to come in the first place, but because of the miscommunication and grey areas TA/Victoria provided, they allowed a situation like this to occur. It's not defence of Djokovic but I don't think any party can say they dealt with the situation well.

You sound shaken up and a little worked up for some reason, since they cancelled the anti vaxxer's visa
The lesson is that he isn't above the law, regardless of what he and his parents believe.

Australian officials have been a bit incompetent with their administration efforts. It’s a world apart from the ignorant, arrogant and downright reckless behaviour exhibited by Djokovic. Imagine being more upset by incompetent admin than someone wilfully risking peoples lives.

Reading this thread, so is your ignoring of every other aspect as it doesn't suit your agenda.

For me neither the Aussies nor the Serbs are showing any sign of intelligence. Farcical from all sides. Like squabbling little children.

As for Novak though, he's got what he deserves. Ridiculous behaviour from him.

Not really. He's a cnut, he's arrogant, he's an anti vaxxer, 2 years into a pandemic he's putting peoples lives at risk thinking he's above the law and doesn't need to quarantine if he did in fact test positive (which feels overly convenient timing anyway), he's a nationalist with (to put it mildly and without bringing a whole Balkan war into this thread) very controversial views, he's got some straight up strange beliefs that he can draw powers from "pyramids" (which aren't even pyramids but merely a tourism scam on a mountain).

I'm not sure who you're referring to as being more upset but my point was Djokovic, unlike other players was willing to sit at home (if he wasn't incorrectly misled to believe that he was fine to come).

Regardless, while I'm sure he still won't take the vaccine, hopefully Djokovic can learn a lesson from all of this at least since his behaviour was exposed publicly.

Can the non tennis folk finally feck off from the thread now?

I'm going with Zverev to win it all now. Medvedev is rightly the favorite and if he wins , he'll be getting close to that number one ranking.

How can anyone see his actions in…

a) meeting up with LOTS of people while Covid positive with no mask, endangering lives with reckless abandon.

b) lying about his actions on official government documentation

…and say “it’s a bit weird the hate he is getting”

THAT is what is weird

Saying it’s a bit weird Novax is getting hate is quite hilarious.

The lad that beat Murray the other day has a great chance I reckon, a semi finalist last year as well I hear? Hit the ball very nicely on the surface and defended well too.

Back to tennis, I think we're finally going to get some new winners in the Australian open now that Novak is out and Nadal is out of form.

The last winner not from the big 3 was Wawrinka in 2014 and before that was Safin in 2015.

The big 3 dominance in men's tennis is borderline ridiculous.

Yeah, by no means will this be an easy ride for Nadal. Just thinking that, when you consider who's missing the AO, he couldn't ask for a better chance to leapfrog Federer and Djokovic.

As well as the two you mentioned, there's Tsitsipas and I agree with @Berbasbullet above - Karatsev looked very impressive yesterday. Monfils is apparently in good form, too, which I love to see.
