Looks like Novak is mentally exhausted. He pushed hard for RG and then he probably was gunning to win the Olympics as well to really stake his claim on every event this year.

On the Tennis Podcast earlier in the week they mentioned that the rumour they’d heard around the game was that Federer wanted to go out at the Laver Cup. Unless he can see himself getting physically right and playing another full season, that seems unlikely now, if true. Maybe the reference to getting back on the tour in some shape or form was about him either getting to do a lap of honour somewhere or perhaps even that he’d go out at Laver Cup 2022 but I suspect we’ll see an off court retirement late this year or early next.
Sad one. Next Wimbledon might be his last. Would be nice to go out on his favorite court.
He probably should have taken longer to return. He was barely at 50% at Wimbledon this year so it didn't serve any purpose.

No final hurrah. He's pushed his body to its limits, and now it's pushing back at him.
Him and Fed seem to be over.
Given the two statements released, Nadal seems a lot more optimistic than Federer who is having an operation and cited that there is just a glimmer of hope. I think we'll see them both back in some form but Federer may only have a farewell tournament or two (or an exhibition). I think we'll see Nadal competing again for another year or two but it remains to be seen what level he will be at.
Critics have often said that Nadal would be physically shot after 29 and at age 35 he is still competing at the highest level. He changed his game to use the net more often and to play short points in stead of making every point a long rally.
federer hasnt been as dependent on his physical attributes per se. His movement and IQ were the main contributors to his success. His movement has been decreasing with the problems he had and at age 40 he might have reached the end of his career.
I give Novak at this stage of his career the best papers to win more GS’s and potentially surpassing the 20 GS’s mark. The only thing missing in his career is the Gold medal.
When discussing the ‘goat’ these type of things do weigh. in the end, they all have unique records on their name and they will always be remember as the best 3 tennis players ever.

He's confident because he points out that it's the same injury which had multiple doctors predicting a short career for him. He overcame all of that and managed to perform beyond what many thought was possible for him, so it's understandable that he's positive, regardless of the prognosis.
Federer seemed a little resigned to the fact that it's difficult to compete at the elite level at that age, and with his injuries.
I agree that Novak has the best chance to own the GrandSlam mark, and I think he may end up doing it with a 2 slam buffer.
How big a role the lack of a Gold Medal and the fact that his nearest rivals are older and were at an age disadvantage during their rivalry is another topic.
I'm not entirely sure most tennis fans get into those nuances, but i might be wrong. I'm curious to see what the general consensus will be when they're all retired.
Great win by Rublev. First time he's ever beaten medvedev. Zverev comes through an epic three setter as well. Tie break 7-4 in the decider.

Zverev in best of 3 and Zverev in best of 5 are very different players. He doesn't have the consistency and should we say temperament as well (yet) to win vs top players in slams. Let's see. He still should be expected to make semis in USO given his current form.
Good point. I do think he looks a bit different after the Olympics. The backhand is crisp and his comeback against tsisipas shows some mental growth I reckon.
Yeah normally one would expect him to lose from 2 breaks up, especially vs good players when he has one of his meltdowns. Let's see. Really need at least 3-4 NextGen to become consistent with good tennis. Can't expect previous generation's big 4 sort of level, but a level below that should still be good tennis.
This would be a really sad way for their era to finish. As a Federer fan, even Nadal closing out his career with injuries would be disappointing. Both deserve one last hurrah but at least in Federer's case, it seems hard to see happening.
