Tennis 2020

I don't think Federer will bother showing up after watching that if he really has been having physical problems.

Potentially Wawrinka, Nadal, Djokovic, Federer to make up the grand slam semifinal pairs in 2020 would be absolutely insane.

Considering he has not played a single seed in this tournament and the fact he just played a player ranked 100 in the QFs who blew 7 match points, it's not really that incredible.
You're clueless if you think it's a breeze to play tennis at the top level at 38, let alone going far into the tournaments like he is.

Practically everyone on the tour can beat him in terms of speed and fitness now.

Disagree regarding fitness. He may be older than almost everyone but he's certainly not physically below the rest of the field. There are plenty of players who are injury prone, don't have the stamina for five sets or get struggle to recover physically from a tough match.

It's probably underrated how physically fit Federer has been and continues to be.

Even with speed, there a still loads of tall slow players on tour.

Most players are retired for 5 years or so at 38. Federer is top 3 in the world and competing for more slams. So yeah...pretty incredible.

He’s the second oldest player to reach a Slam final after Ken Rosewall, who was playing in an era when they serve and volley the whole time on Australian grass. Now they are grinding out baseline rallies on cement.

The easy draw is a factor, but he’s competing against players 6,7,8, even 10+ years his juniors, in an extremely taxing sport, at 38.5 year of age. If you don’t find that impressive at all then bias is clouding your judgement.

If Federer was in genuinely great form like two years back I'd have fancied his chances. But he's been really poor in this tournament by his standards so I don't see how this isn't a 3 or 4 set win for Djokovic.

The Federer Nadal thing is kinda like the Messi Ronaldo thing innit? Very polarizing stuff it seems.

Federer, like Messi, is obviously better of course.

Ok, I should clarify, everyone he's playing at major tournaments are faster and healthier than him.

It’s not really because Djokovic is there too and could end up surpassing both.

Also the age thing is boring. Players are much fitter now than they were a decade or so ago. Even then 36 year old Agassi was pushing Federer to four sets in US open final. If you can stay clear of injuries you got a good chance of having a long career.

Also despite many predicting his knees would be gone in his 30s. Nadal has won more slams in his 30s than Federer. Yet nobody praises him for his age he’s doing that. He has won 5 slams post 30, which is the record. Why doesn’t he get any praise for his age? Why is age only mentioned when it is regarding Federer? Djokovic could also tie the record and make it 5 if he wins the AO. Yet again very little talk about his age. Feds won only three post 30. Wawrinka has done it twice.

Like I said what all these men not just Federer are doing for their age is remarkable. The other three seem to get praised for it less. Five and four slams for Nadal and Djokovic considering how their game is more gruelling than Federers is remarkable. Both seem to be changing it slightly even Djokovic this year seems to be serving bigger.

I don't think it's going to be that remarkable now to see players doing well late into their 30s. Federer is doing it, Karlovic is still playing, Nadal and Djokovic are at a very good level and winning Slams and even Stan has become back from major injury issues to reach a pretty decent level. This is an era across all sport where players are way fitter playing into their 30s.

Yep even Del Potro with the hundred injuries came back and was world number 3.

I am convinced if Murray can stay healthy he could get in the top 10 as long as he gets a decent coach. That victory over Wawrinka was crucial for him.

Spot on. Nadal, according to all the experts and fans, should have retired by now and yet here he is, having won more Slams than anyone else post 30. He and Djokovic don't even have a massive serve or the kind of game that let's them cut points short and yet they're still here, winning Slams at their age.
What Federer is doing is fantastic Ofcourse but I think these tennis players do well into their 30s is going to become pretty routine.
It always helps that the rest of the field is way too poor to even trouble the 30+ versions of these

Yeah Murray could quite easily get back to the Top 10. There really aren't that many great players in there outside of the Top 3. Thiem and Medvedev are fairly decent but a fit Murray can definitely beat everyone else.

Any idea of what time that Djokovic Federer game will be on Thursday?

Did I say it was a breeze? Your points are what are clueless.

Fed has never relied on speed and is 100% still faster than many players playing at the grand slams. As pointed out in other posts this is a completely different era with sports science and players still at the top in all sports up to 40.

Also physically better as well, hes one of the fittest players on tour for god sake.

To claim its incredible he has made SF playing no seeds and being lucky against Millman and today with 7 break points is laughable.

Name 5 player that made it into a semis of a major open in the last 20 years when they're above 35. That list is going to be incredibly small and just shows what Federer has been doing in the past few years is ridiculous.

And how is it his problem that the seeded players in his draw are all not performing hence him not meeting them?

Can name three off the top of my head. Federer and Williams sisters. No doubt woman's tennis doesn't count because it doesn't suit your agenda.

Ill try repeat this so you finally grasp it, what Federer has done in recent years has been amazing. HOWEVER, its not incredible what he has achieved at THIS grand slam.

Thanks, checked myself RG, and none save for Roger did it. Kudos to Agassi as well, looks like he made the final of US Open with 35 and 5 months.

Well done to Zverev. He's largely gone under the radar this tournament. He also has a very realistic chance of donating his entire prize money sum if he does go onto win it now..

That was more straight forward than I expected. Appears to be in great form.
Not gonna lie when he dropped the 1st set I thought here we go again but he didn’t crumble and instead played quite dominantly afterwards.

Maybe this is the time he made the step up, at least he’s not struggling to make a Slam quarter anymore.

Yet another set where Nadal has major issues closing out a set and commentators will still behave surprised by it
The amount of times he's failed to close out sets and matches in recent years is ridiculous. Just gets so tight!

Great stuff from Thiem to turn the set around, this match is shaping up to be a cracker!

From serving for the set and holding set point to losing it abjectly in the tie break. Awful 15 mins and yet again nerves get the better of him.

Nadal is playing decent. Just needs to put a bit more pressure on Thiem when he is serving.

Shit like this happen when you are 34. Stop being so worked up.
It's not something new. It's been happening to him for some years now. It's extremely bewildering given how mentally tough and clutch he used to be. Nowadays you just know he's never going to serve anything out.

Unfair this is a quarter because both guys are going to take so much out of each other if this carries on.
