Tennis 2016

I thought he'd repeated it and stated that if it happened on the eve of the final, he's gone.
Ah, I've missed that. Well, he probably knows he's losing it anyway, so what's the harm? I can understand it.

Fans would be pissed though. Organizers too.

Shame for Raonic, played a nice game, but lost his nerves at the beginning of the 5th set, now it's pretty much game over.

I doubt Andy can beat Nole, especially after 5 sets today.

if murray looses his record in the Australian open final will be played five lost five
Novaks will be played six and won six.

this would make me happy because as I'm sure Murray can appreciate - I support anybody but the Scottish;)

Pleased Murray will win but sad he will lose another Australian Open final.

Is Raonic injured, or has he just not been strong enough mentally? I saw the first half of the match and he was terrific.

He did have a medical pause and they showed him getting his thigh massaged. I think it's fatigue mostly, though. He's not build for that kind of games. It was clear that he had little chance in a 5th set against Murray.

I quite like Murray and I'd really like him to win GS's (but not against Novak, obviously.)

Murray saying the injury definitely slowed him down in the 5th.

Would have been great to have a new champion.

Pleased Murray won but he has no chance against Djokovic. At least he defends his points and stays #2. Felt a bit sorry for Raonic as he was playing quite well. He'll definitely win a slam sometime soon if he stays fit. Not a huge fan of servebots but it is at the point now where I'll take anything to stop the Novak domination.

Been an interesting women's final. Serena has looked out of sorts at time. Kerber has been pretty good. On serve in the final set.

Kerber is 5-2 up in the deciding set. She's been great, just needs to get over the final hurdle..

Been a great final. Really impressive from Kerber.
Best women's match I've seen for a while (I don't watch much in fairness). Kerber has surprised me how well she has competed from the baseline.

Well done Kerber!! Would have been gutted for her had she lost that after being 5-2 up in the set.

Amazing win for Kerber. Like many, I had this down as a Serena in straight sets win. Serena was a bit off, but Kerber was great and deserved the win.

Serena had a shocker in the first set (30-odd unforced errors?) but from then on she was very competitive. Kerber was just very, very good.

It felt like a great sporting moment too. You could tell Kerber idolised Serena to some degree and you could see Serena had a great deal of respect for her and was genuinely happy that she won her first grand slam.

Kerber is so much fun to watch, she is incredibly fit and can find some remarkable angles. Great win for her. Tennis players always work towards winning a slam and so it's a special moment whenever a player wins his /her first slam.

His serve is the only thing about his game which is half decent.
He's got powerful groundstrokes. I suppose you're a fan of defensive baseline tennis. That's fine. I prefer tennis players who attack more.

Delighted for Kerber but Serena really should be winning that. Keber was just staying in points for a lot of the time waiting for Serena to make mistakes. And it wasn't even the Nadal kind of defensive tennis where there is genuine venom behind his counter punching. Very often all she was doing was getting it back in play.

Great sporting moment though to see someone fulfill their dream of winning a GS. Among all the records we focus on with regards to the household name, one forgets the utter joy involved for a tennis player who doesn't expect plenty of GS' to win one.

Also a mention to the serve in the womens game, which is downright appalling. Serena is a great sportsman, but the standard of serving from the rest of the field really needs to go through a real change. The way she swats away the serve of the other players, it's sometimes like a bloke serving in the men's game.

Standard of the womens game in general is absolutely abysmal. Unwatchable for me. Can't serve, mentally weak as putty, constant screeching, unforced error after unforced error, feck that.

Not really, it's just because her opponents are utterly inept. Her serve is nowhere close to the men's. Remember when a 100 something ranked male player destroyed both her and Venus?

I wasn't bigging her serve up rather critizing the serve of women players in general. She seems to have the same advantage when returning those horrible serves, as should exist for the server. It's sad to see supposedly top players do little with their serve apart from get it in.

The women do not pursue the sport with the same dedication and intensity as the men, that's a fact. I still have a chuckle remembering the interview Sharapova gave saying that she couldn't bear lifting weight more than 5kg. Compare that to Raonic who wear that dreadful mouthpiece to improve his performance, or Djokovic changing his diets, regimes etc...

A year ago maybe. He's improved a lot of aspects of his game lately. His forehand is really powerful and long, especially the diagonals. His net game has been amazing these past two tournaments, as well. He's definitely not a just servebot anymore.

I can't decide if this is misogynistic or just an uninformed throwaway comment...

I'm not saying I disagree, but that's not "a fact". That's an opinion based on anecdotal evidence.

I'll be honest...that gave me a proper chuckle. I'm over here secretly typing away giggling to myself, as my wife is a huge Serena fan, and would be furious if she caught me mocking the women's game in this fashion. You are right though, it is fecking appalling. I think the women break serve more often than they hold it. Serena is the only one with a respectable serve and because of that she just fecking dominates. Watching her play Sugarpova the other day was fecking embarrassing. They were both grunting, shrieking and yelling at the top of their voices after almost every (incredibly average) point.

I think Serena can be a great role model for girls, and she seems very humble and magnanimous after defeat. But when I look at the women's game and see her (21 slams) about to surpass Steffi Graff (22), it's hard not to look over the last ten years and say, where has her competition been? The next highest grand slam winner is her sister Venus with 7, and she's been a non-entity for a long time. After that it is Maria with 4 or 5. Compare that with the men's game. You've got Federer (17), Nadal (14), and Djokovic (10, maybe 11 tonight), all playing in the same era. On top of that players like Murray and Warinka who would have won at least 5 each if they had been born 10 years earlier. Hyper-competitive.

This is how shit women's tennis is. Justin Henin was world number one, indisputably. Had 7 grand slams to her name at 24. Decided to retire (2007). Came out of retirement a couple of years later (2010), made the 4th round of the French and Wimbledon before getting to the Australian Open final, where she lost in 3 sets to Serena. Then retired again. She's 33 now. Could probably pick up a racket and make a decent run at most majors still.

Agreed with this. His volleying especially has been first rate recently.

He's still an ugly fecker though, with terrible posture and a disturbing, lumbering walk.

Agree with everything, including the Serena respect. Despite the failings of the opposition she has been a historical sporting figure.

I just can't take anymore of it though, the world number five hitting 6 double faults in the opening 8 games of a grand slam match summed it up for me.

Every slam it seems several seeded players get knocked out early and it doesn't surprise anyone.

Pc brigade incoming.

I don't think there's anything wrong with saying the women's game lacks quality and is uncompetitive but saying they're mentally weak is a completely baseless assertion.
