Tendulkar says he'll retire after his 200th Test Match

Agreed.

Back to sachin, should he have really been an all rounder?

He should have. He spun the ball more than Harbhajan and Kumble FFS! One of the most naturally talented bowlers, but he never bowled!

I always thought he was too talented not to be a quality bowler. He pretty much had the ability to do everything with the ball. But at the end of the day, given the state of Indian cricket at the time and Sachin's role in that team, I don't think he or we could afford to saddle him with even more responsibility. Which is a shame really, because I think there was serious talent there.

At one point he used to bowl consistently. In ODIs he bowled at least 4-5 overs a game and many a times his full quotas. Even in that Kolkatta test, he picked up 3 big wickets to help us win. From what I read, after his tennis elbow injury he started to bowl less and less.

Yeah but I don't think he really gave it a go seriously. It was always an "ill chip in when I can" rather than a "let's really work at making the most of this". His talent was much more than a bit part bowler for me.

correct. I genuinely believe he could spin the ball more than Bhaji. He is bowling now too.

Haha, Kallis mentioned in the same sentence as Tendulkar! Absolute madness, and I'm South African.

It's been a tough year for an Indian Manchester United fan.

Fergie, Scholes, Beckham and Sachin all retired in one year.

Pietersen spins the ball more than Swann. Doesn't make him an all-rounder. Sachin's bowling was handy but it would've taken far too much away from his batting if he'd put in the effort required to become anything more than a 'decent option' with the ball.

I think he mainly saw bowling as a bit of fun, really. I remember someone saying they walked passed the nets when he was practising and he just said 'watch this' and proceeded to produce a series of inswinging flippers. Which must be quite a trick to show people but isn't really going to be something that'll help your match bowling.

His bowling was class (that googly to Moin:drool:) but yeah, he had more than enough pressure on him without saddling even more. Look at what we did to Irfan trying to make him an alrounder:(

To be fair 3 of them needed to retire! Was becoming a bit painful to watch Scholes' legs give up on him and watch Sachin out of form. Fergie retired the best possible way though.

Anyway thank you to Sachin, it's been a honour to watch him and growing up with Lara, Tendulkar and Warne to watch was awesome. Tendulkar was truly box-office, felt like a movie everytime he'd come out to bat, so much pressure and expectation and he dealt with it very well.

Hahaha FFS Kallis one of the best ever? There's more to sports than just numbers. He's an excellent cricketer but I don't think I've ever anticipated a single Kallis innings or bowling spell in my life, never even feared one.

Who do you regard as your greatest player over the last two or three decades?

I rate a lot of SA players very highly. But I never think of any as one of the absolute best.

No more other player talk after this one!

I'd have Graeme Smith as a batsman over him too, when the chips are down Smith produces.

Steyn and Donald.

feck, missed everything. Someone please provide me with a decent link for the final ceremony, the one on Youtube is lagging and all. :(

Yeah that's a shit link. I missed today. Would've liked to see his speech, not BCCI's idiots hanging around like the filthy vermin they are.

StarSports.com works but you only get 10 minutes for free, so I didn't manage to catch the whole thing. Managed to watch the rest on Youtube (there is one that doesn't lag), but they keep getting taken down. Try this one and be quick.

He even thanked the photographers!

Is there any kind of repeat being aired on any of the SS channels? That's pretty much all they seem to show these days, surely they'd have this?

Thanks to shr in the newbs for giving the links, they work well.
Watched it twice, just can't get enough of him. :( What an emotional moment, for someone who has spent his childhood worshipping him and still does. Fortunate, to put it lightly, to witness his greatness over the years.
God. That's all.

It's on SS1 right now for those who haven't seen it yet

EDIT: Apparently not. Sorry

A genius like Sachin are a rarity in any sport, his longevity, skill, mannerisms were just exemplary. I just consider it a privilege to have been around during his career.

Kallis? I'd rather have the likes of Donald, Steyn and Amla over him.

Absolutely! He might have a great record, but having witnessed myself, and heard from very good sources he has always been very selfish, and played for himself more than the interests of his team.

Actually I meant SAs best, sults.

Damn I feel like I'm a teenager again. I'm totally lost in memories of the great man.

I loved Lara's comments on him. Classy.

How do you judge the bowlers though?

Unlike batsmen it's difficult to name just 3 of the best.

Warne, Murali, Imran, Wasim, Waqar, Marshall, McGrath, Ambrose (no particular order).

Just watching the whole speech and everything.

This is like the most emotional hour ever.

That speech is probably one of the best I've ever heard, and I'd say I'm not particularly prone to hyperbole or fanboyism at the best of times. Startlingly simple, excellently narrated and what a finish. I'm going to miss him.

It really was a great speech, handled himself perfectly. He was also awarded the Bharat Ratna (is the Republic of India's highest civilian award, for performance of highest order in any field of human endeavour.)

Astonishing achievement. All in all, it was all too emotional and he will never ever be forgotten.

God. In every sense. :)

As everyone knows, I've hated Tendulkar's deification and found this whole SRT200 thing very garish. But that really was a fantastic speech, brought a lump to my throat.
