Tariq Lamptey

He was an 18 year old in Chelsea's academy at the time so probably not even on the list at all!

Ha. Fair point. But those 399 right backs must have been somewhere.

What’s he like defensively?

I get the feeling he’s the polar opposite of AWB, great going forwards but couldn’t defend adequately in a 4 at the back. Shame we couldn’t glue them together

He's surprisingly strong, a good tackler but obviously he's about 5'4" so there's always going to be an issue there in a back 4.

He’s relentless. The thing is yeah he’d most likely get killed in a back 4. His game is all about knicking in and bombing in. It’s all pace. Seems to be quite injury prone and only really effective when he plays on the edge. Class player to watch. Not one I’d sign for Utd

Too small to be a full on RB, tends to tire in the 2nd half, always injured. Great fun but not a player for us IMO.

Exactly what we need, a Roberto Carlosesque force from right back, get it done. He might be tiny but he's a phenomenal athlete with a great leap on him. While we're there, let's pick up that fella that played LCB for them.

If he goes to a top club that plays a back three he could really kick on

Do Chelsea have a buyback clause?

Not sure about him in a back 4 at the top level

Not somebody I see us needing but could be a good signing for spurs... would certainly be competition for Emerson

Crazy the right back options for England

Trent
Walker
Tripper
Awb
Lampty
Aaron's
Livramento

And I'm still hopefully that laird is going to establish himself in that group.

hard to believe that anyone thinks he would struggle in a back four defensively

He hasn't been going as advanced as he used to be lately. Probably due to formation changed.

He was fantastic again yesterday. Whenever I watch him play he looks impressive.

TBF Cucurella looks pretty good to me as well, so it's likely I don't know what I'm talking about here.

Fantastic at what? Didnt do a lot then was subbed on 66 mins, then Brighton came back for a point. He did less than AWB did going forward

Wouldn't be worth the fee it would take to prize him from Brighton, good player nonetheless.

his name sounds like a fish. enough reason to side skirt this one imo.

The people moaning about potentially signing a 5 ft 7" striker, won't be happy signing a 5 ft 5 " right back.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence. Right back is the new right wing. Right wing is basically a striker/inside forward now and all the good right footed lads want to play on the left inside and cut in. Massive lack of quality no 9s in the game today but an over abundance of wide players.

On TV I've seen him play well, I wouldn't mind us signing him but not before we have the midfield sorted out & signing Haaland, obviously.

why does anyone care that Lamptey is only 5'5"....he's an outside back not a CB or CF

Ethan Laird should be given a opportunity to claim the RB spot imo. But if we're to look for a RB, then I'd prefer someone like Tino Livramento over Lamptey. Chelsea do have some sort of clause inserted into the players contract, when they sold him to Southampton, and may look to bring him back to the club in the next few years.

If someone swigs a cross into the far post, he'll be getting beat more likely that not. Unless he has a godly leap. But I like attacking fullbacks more than defensive ones so I wouldn't complain.

Not to mention Wan Bissaka is 6’0 and him at the back post is probably the worst part of his game

That never stopped midgets Lahm and Dani Alves to be the best fullbacks of this generation

The were both a couple of inches taller though, which probably does make a difference given the average left winger isn't usually that much taller.

I also think Livramento is a better long term prospect than Lamptey. Think Chelsea have a buy back that comes in in summer 2023. I think it’s quite low too.

Laid definitely looks a similar prospect and should be given a go.

You expect most top sides to skew towards attack-orientated fullbacks, so easy to see why Lamptey would be of interest. The mail article cited above mentions a £30-40m transfer fee which seems fair enough, though my perception may be skewed by the money we dropped on AWB. Also a boyhood United fan, which never hurts I guess.

Injuries would be the main concern. 9 months out with hamstring problems isn't nothing.

My guess is he'll end up at a club that plays wing-backs like Spurs or Atalanta. Could also see Bayern going for him since they have bigger RBs in Pavard and Stanisic and he'd be an option when they're attacking teams or if Davies is out and Lucas Hernandez is at LB playing more conservatively he could replace that attacking force.

You forgot Reece James.

I'd use the money elsewhere whilst we see if Laird has what it takes.

We already have 3 RBs on our books so who are we selling? Dalot is probably in better form so it would be odd to push him out and keep AWB.

Definitely a wing back rather than a RB. His lack of height would be a problem in a back four. Against teams that play a more direct approach, you'd want your tallest forward up against lamptey as he'd pretty much win every header and flick on.

Would be kinda ironic than LVG got rid of Raphael for being too short for a RB and then we go back to recruitng a short RB.
