Can't speak about Carvalho but Ndombele is having a fine season.
He shines the most in big games such as the Man City ones or PSG where he is allowed to have space and start counterattacks
I'd say he's been Lyon's 5th or 6th best player overall this season.

I take it you watch Lyon a lot - who are the players who have been better? Anyone United should be looking into? Say a centre back or a DM?

From what I've seen of Ndombele he plays a role similar to what Pogba does for us so there's no vacancy in the team there.
 
I was of the understanding Ndombele would be more what Fred was meant to be for us. Or what Moussa Dembele was for Spurs?!

He is, I wouldn’t say he is a DM. He can do it for sure but he’s better as say the middle man between Matic and Pogba.
Haven’t seen Carvalho since he left Sporting but I would say they play in different ways. Ndombele can be much more offensive.
 
From what I’ve seen, I think he’s not too far off pogba in terms of style and what he brings to a team

Carvalho is no where near the potential Ndombele has. Ndombele would certainly elevate our midfield. Ed needs to go all out for Ndombele and Manolas. Getting them both for about 80m would be a steal. We can possibly add a winger in the summer.

Ndombele ---- Herrera

That midfield three would dominate any midfield. Ndombele and Herrera breaking up play and releasing it quick for Pogba and our forwards. We really need to have a plan in place to get him over the summer or something. Ed needs to tie him up right now. I would go and even include one of our midfielders in the deal if need be. Pereira on a season loan at Lyon would do him a world of good and since his best mate Depay is there, it would sweeten the deal.
 
He's good but we already have Pogba. Not really clever to sign him. We need another profil like Pjanic/Verratti/De Jong/...

The players who have been better than him so far imo are
-Lopes (goalkeeper)
-Ferland Mendy (leftback)
-Aouar (CM)
-Memphis (Left wing/striker)
-Fekir (10/false 9)

As for Ndombele/Pogba similarities well I think he's an even better dribbler and can break lines better than Paul with the ball at his feet but he's not nearly as good in term of passing and creativity, he also doesn't have Pogba's shooting or finishing abilities.

I think Pogba/Ndombele in the same team could still work though but we would need to see who the next manager is, I would find it hard to play both of them in a system that doesn't rely on fast transitions and counterattacking as Ndombele doesn't offer anything Pogba cannot do when in possession.

Best leftback in Ligue 1 imo, he has world class potential, very good going forward, great crossing, extremely athletic as well as good at combining with his teammates.
He has defensive flaws though but that's to be expected from a player who goes forward so often and Lyon in general is a pretty dysfunctional team due to having a really bad coach

Doesn't like the CM we need. I'd like someone who can dictate a game of football.

Since when did they become best mates?

And Pereira as 6 months left on his deal anyway, he won’t be loaned anywhere. Nor should he, he’s not a kid, we either play him or sell him.

Pereira and Depay both came through the PSV set up before Pereira was snapped by United.

I'd prefer someone like Fernandinho or Kante to play in the defensive / deep-lying midfield position, instead of going for a highly technical midfielder.

Kante's not like Fernandinho though, Fernandinho does the DM side while also being a very good passer from deep, in truth Kante isn't that great of a passer and he doesn't really play the holding role when he's at his best as he likes to chase around after the ball and press, if we bought a player of his ilk it would be to compete with Herrera. Bottom line is whether it's as a DM or as a #8 we need another technical, passing midfielder in that 3, someone that can feed the channels and Pogba from deep as what will happen if Pogba is the only passer in the 3 is teams will crowd him out, .

My point was that we need someone that has better defensive attributes rather than technical passing abilities to play in the deep midfield role, so if someone like Fernandinho who is good defensively as well as offering a great range of passing then great but if not we desperately need someone with strong defensive capabilities in a midfield 3

Edit to add...let’s not forget we spent 50 million on fred to play alongside Pogba so I’d give him time to adjust...also we have Periera to come in too

The thing is you can be good defensively without running around like a blue arsed fly, Herrera already offers good defensive cover in the midfield and if we sorted our CB's out as well then we'd see a marked difference. If we get a CM with good ground coverage and positioning to go with Herrera we'd be fine, he doesn't need to be a high energy cruncher IMO. If we compromise on the passing aspect we'll not solve the problem, we'll just create a different problem.

Ndombele for me is a bit of a no brainer, we should be doing everything to get him and I like what you’ve done there but in my mind I was thinking more along the lines of replacing Herrera in the line up which not something I really wanted to do but I was thinking of DeJong or Neves playing as a deep lying midfielder so was wanting him in for the protection value but can totally see what you’ve done there working. I would swap them around so that Ndombele could run free and not go in to the territory Pogba likes to go in to on the occasions he breaks forward.

Actually, now that you bring it up.... It wouldn't hurt to play two No. 8s in Pogba and Ndombele side by side with a destroyer behind them or a deep lying playmaker who just feeds the ball to the both of them while Pogba and Ndombele do the hard work of dribbling and creating opportunities in the final third. Either way, having Ndombele gives us plenty of options.... like for instance, not being heavily relied on Pogba. Without Pogba in midfield, our midfield falls flat.
 
If Herrera doesn’t renew his contract, we will need a proper replacement. Not sure if he’s the guy though. Is he a flair player or can he be a bit of bastard?

You obviously haven't watched him at all have you?
 
We need players in five or six positions before we should be addressing our central midfield. Three out of four spots in our back line are in dire need of an upgrade, and we could probably do with a right winger or two, a striker and a DM as well. This guy isn't good enough for us to justify neglecting the other spots in order to get him.
 
He's probably a good player but I think there are greater priorities. If we drop £80m on him and neglect our right wing or center of defense I will be furious.

He’s not Pogba, that’s just a bit of a lazy comparison because he has some Pogba like skills. He’s strong on the ball and a powerful runner like Pogba who can dribble and probably moves quite similar to Pogba in that respect. He certainly has some skills and can do Pogba esque stuff but he isn’t as good as Pogba is at that.

He can pick a pass but again not really like Pogba, tends to keep it quite simple more often than not but can certainly ping one when needed. If anything he’s probably more of a developed footballer in that he has a more rounded game and is more likely to be aware of his defensive duties and tends to be quite aggressive in going about that hence why I would want him but not necessarily play him as a DM but in Herreras role. Just think that would get the best out of him as he can certainly go forward and be a threat but has the energy and power to get back when needed. Think a midfield of he and Pogba would be quite something if we have a DLP with them.

Others seem to want a Modric type but they are really hard to come buy and I think speed and power with skill would be more effective for us with what we have.

I did ask if he's more like Herrera and didn't mention Pogba at all. But from your description, he sounds more like Matic from Chelsea's PL winning season under Jose. Someone who keeps it simple but plays box-to-box.

Does he get stuck in to tackles and interceptions? Because we desperately lack a midfielder who can do that when Herrera is not playing. He could be a good option in that case if Herrera decides to not renew his contract.

Here’s a video that shows quite a lot of his attributes and what he can do but obviously it’s a YouTube compilation and the game is a lot more complex but at least you’ll have more of an idea what he is like.



Wouldn’t say he is Kante or Herrera levels in hunting balls down but if a ball is to be won and he can do something about it he will be quite aggressive in that pursuit.

If there is a comparison to be made it’s maybe a more athletically gifted Dembele of Spurs with better defensive attributes.
 
Cheers, sounds like someone we could get and might improve our team. But if we have a limited budget, I'd like us to address other areas of the team first.
 
Was screaming for us to get this guy in the summer instead of Fred, whoever was in charge of that deal needs a hiding.

Very similar in style perhaps but Ndombele offers something different to what Pogba do. Ndombele can play both a defensive role or a b2b role. If we can bring him here to play behind Pogba and alongside Herrera we'd have the best midfield in the world.

Ed should move heaven and earth to get him.

He'd propulse our midfield to another level. If he's available we should do everyting to get him. If we let him go to our rivals, we'll regret it for the next 10 years, it'd be the same mistake we made with Ronaldinho and Hazard.
