Tahith Chong

He was the best player in that game. Pace, power and high work rate winger, I'll be surprised if Jose isn't interested in him and not giving him a chance to train with first team this year.

Was that video sped up or something? If not then we definitely have a very very very good player at our hands. I hope he is at least on the bench for our next FA cup tie along with Gomes

If he continues like that he will get his debut this season.

Didn't expect that level of forward passing into crowded areas from him.

Finally a proper winger from the accademy...For all the hype Gomez is getting I think this kid along with O'connor is the best of the lot.

Our own Sane !!!
He's playing in the middle agianst Spur's isn't he?

His potential is higher than Martial and Rashford from what I've seen. I don't think many realise just how good this kid could be for us.

Dunno about that. The growth spurt slowed things for a bit before he suddenly burst into the first team but Rashford was the Angel Gomes of his age group, far and ahead the best talent in that set. He was dribbling through entire defences when he was 16 and half everyone else's height.

Chong has even better close control than Rashford and has fantastic vision to go with his fantastic dribbling. His decision making is already better than Rashfords imo.

I know different names have been thrown around but in a way this kid reminds me of Giggs, especially the defensive nous for the tackling

You are seriously comparing youth teams with senior teams where the game is so much faster and little time to decide?

I'm comparing players with a football at their feet. Close control, passing etc

You also said decision making which depends on the speed of the play and quality of opponents.

It's not like we haven't seen a young player tearing apart youth leagues only to be never seen again or playing for small teams when they make the step up to senior football.

His decision making is a stand out quality for him. Don't think it'll be a bone of contention against even top quality opposition in the future. Just hope Mourinho introduces him gradually into the first team fold.

Lots of optimism in this thread and rightly so, but lets relax a little. The kid has just turned 18. Let's hope he is given a few games as part of the match day squad but I doubt he'll see many minutes for the first team this season.

Hopefully he continues what he's doing, gets to train with the first team and maybe goes on pre-season in the summer and hopefully himself and Gomes have something genuine to offer the team next season.

It would be great if those two and McTominay were genuine squad players next year along with Axel Tuanzebe and Fosu Mensah, but lets temper our expectations a little. There wouldn't have been an influx of academy players into the first team like that since the Class of 92. It's probably not realistic that they all make it here.

He seems even faster after his ACL injury. Super powers.

Yeah, it’s nice when people are optimistic (for a change!) but coming out with stuff like him already being better than Rashford is just bonkers.

You. Better close control, vision, dribbling and decision-making.
Yes he is better at all them things. Chong would do a much better job on either wing in comparison to Rashford who I've lost count the amount of times he runs the ball out of play or just runs straight into a opposing player and loses the ball. Rashford is a talented player that has potential to improve, nothing more, nothing less..

He's obviously not better than Rashford atm. But looked promising yesterday. Despite defeat.

Be interesting to see which way the club play it now, do they keep his feet on the ground and pick him for the 18s against Derby County(H)on Saturday, or start him again for the 23s in the trickier match against Derby County(A)on Sunday ?
I'd say he'll probably be saved for the Youth League playoff in Serbia on Wednesday. I'd expect a young team for the u18s on Saturday and a relatively old team for the u23s on Sunday

He should go out on loan. He is physically ready to make an impact in the seniors.

That'd be the worst thing we could to him. He just came back from a serious injury and should be eased out. We are handling him perfectly.

Chong is a great talent but Rashford at more or less the same age was scoring winners in the Manchester Derbies. Few bad games and people have started treating Rashford as if he's some kind of pace and run merchant. He's not.

Easily better than Martial and Rashford already. Imagine him with Sanchez.

Start vs Spurs.

But seriously though we’re handling him very well. No need to rush anything with him. His ability to take the ball and turn in tight areas with that sort of pace is rare. He’ll win tons of fouls but probably best to keep that in the underage setup for a while.

Sense. He’s a fantastic raw talent but people need to slow it down a bit. Looks light still and the pace of the EPL is twice as quick. Some of his play is still a little sloppy and at a higher level that gets punished.

Yeah, true. Although the un-strict way that U-23s is referee’d makes me anxious. He draws a lot of fouls the way he plays and the referees at this level seem to think it’s more important to never send anyone off than it is to protect someone like Chong. Spurs kicked the shit out of him last night. Painful to watch.

Be nice if O'Connor, Chong and Gomez were all good enough to be first team regulars in 3-4 years. We know how the youth system works though. Only one of them will probably be elite level and the rest will eventually fade away.

Would love if they turned out world class for us though

Imagine how good he would be without that ACL injury. Looking good

Great debut for U23's and shows the disparity in ability between where the U18's are compared to the older age group. They have had to bring in aThe U23's are now bottom of the league I believe.

Early days but aside from clearly his natural ability, like with all creative players was his bravery to play and not just be safe, and his bravery to keep going despite being fouled by older and more physically developed players.

Lets hope his development plan is good and he doesn't end up going out the door if not getting meaningful football. Trust me the U23 is not it at the mo.....

A brilliant performance from a lad who's just turned 18 and who's not long back from a serious injury. What height is he? Hard to know with the hair but look about 6'1?

Spurs really kicked him up and down the field didn't they? Seemed the only way to stop him.

I like his positive attitude in wanting to drive forward with the ball at every opportunity. Also put in the effort to get back and recover the ball, much like Giggs as someone else mentioned.

I think many are capable of getting to the elite level but as Warren Joyce said, too many of them start to believe their own hype and stop doing the things that made them stand head and shoulders over everyone else in their age group. Making the first team or even having a breakout season like Januzaj did is not the end game, its consistency and continued development.

I think the absolute worst thing for him just now would be involving him in first team matches. Training and travelling with the squad, fair enough, but not a chance he’s ready yet for a game. He’s not long up in the U23s, off a very serious injury. Let him settle in there a bit and then take him on next season’s tour.
