Manager Sir Alex Ferguson will expect the contracts to be rubber stamped in January.

Fergie has no issues with regards to fitness and feels they can play a further part in bringing on the club's new crop of kids.

But the future of fellow United stalwart Gary Neville, 35, is still unclear.

It is believed Neville is tempted by coaching and possibly becoming involved with United's next generation of superstars.

The ex-England defender is more than content to wait until the summer before he decides whether to carry on playing.

United have the data and analysis they need on Giggs and Scholes, both 36, and that is another reason Fergie wants them to delay retirement again.

It is understood the pair will be offered reduced terms but can expect to earn £65,000 a week with bonuses linked in.

United want to bring talks forward with Darren Fletcher, 26, and Wes Brown, 31, and have them signed up next summer.

MANCHESTER UNITED have made an enquiry about Portugal left-back Fabio Coentrao, 22 - in case France ace Patrice Evra quits Old Trafford.
