The Benzema story is in sunday's Daily Star. This is from tribal football:
Man Utd wait for Real Madrid green light on Benzema

Manchester United remain interested in Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.

The Daily Star Sunday says United boss Sir Alex Ferguson tried to sign the France striker from Lyon for £30million a year ago after the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo.

But Benzema – like Ronaldo – opted to join Real Madrid.

Fergie, however, still wants Benzema – whose future is now in the hands of new Real boss Jose Mourinho.

The former Chelsea and Inter Milan manager is refusing to sell Benzema, 22, at the moment, as he makes an assessment of the players he has inherited.

But if Mourinho decides that the Fergie target is not in his plans, United will act before the transfer window closes at the end of next month.

Yet another Defensive Midfielder

Sir Alex Ferguson is monitoring the progress of Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole and is rumoured to be considering a move for the 22 year old defensive midfielder as he looks to bring in more young talent into his Old Trafford squad. The Manchester United boss is known to be an admirer of the former Wigan and Middlesbrough man and is looking to capture the battler either before this transfer window shuts or in January, depending on the long term injury concerns over Owen Hargreaves.

The Stockton-on-Tees born midfielder arrived at the Stadium of Light last summer for £6m and has quickly established himself as a key part of Steve Bruce’s first team plans and the former United defender will fight to keep hold of the youngster.

Cattermole has put in some fine performances for the Black Cats and is now said to be close to a full England cap after 16 appearances at Under 21 level. Valued at around £12m, a move for his services would be yet more evidence of Sir Alex looking to bring in hot prospects rather than spending big on established stars.

Having brought in Chris Smalling, Javier Hernandez and Bebe, all under 23, Ferguson appears to be keen on using funds to beef up his squad for the future. Some may believe the lack of big money additions is a sign of the financial problems that have beset the club since the Glazers took over and others may believe that it is more of a sea change by the United boss to look to start to make changes from the ground up.

The likes of Liverpool and Arsenal have also been linked with moves for Sunderland’s tough tackler and a firm bid for his services would surely tempt Cattermole and if so will give Steve Bruce a major headache.

Pastore £40 Million City Target

MANCHESTER CITY are set to smash their transfer record by signing Argentine sensation Javier Pastore from Palermo for £40million.

The Sicilian club rejected moves from Real Madrid and Barcelona during the summer for the 21-year-old playmaker but City's move will prove tougher to resist.

Pastore's price is inflated because they owe an agent £10milllion pounds following his move from Argentine club Huracan for half that sum to Palermo last year.

But that will prove no obstacle to moneybags City who are prepared to do an immediate deal now and loan him back to the Italian club until the start of next season.

They have identified Pastore as the game's next mega-star after his emergence onto the world stage over the last 12 months.

He is good friends with City striker Carlos Tevez who is believed to be playing a part in persuading him to move to Eastlands.

Sir Alex Ferguson tried to sign Pastore from Huracan for £6million two years ago but his value and reputation has soared since moving to Palermo.
