Summer Signings (Not including central midfield)

Unless some big name becomes available, or Rio doesn't sign the contract then I don't think we'll buy. Michael Keane might start making more appearances now, and if not then we should definitely be looking at a Premiership loan for him.

Surprised no-one's mentioning right-back. We need cover for Rafael, Smalling and Jones aren't long-term options.

Unless the idea is for Fabio to cover for either flank. Which would be fine if he could ever stay fit.

true, let's not forget how good he was at RB in the 10/11 run in, you could argue he's more suited to there than left back!

I reckon we'll sign a Portuguese fella from Real Madrid. He's pretty good, can't remember his name though...

If Vidic can maintain his fitness and Rio signs a new contract than Smalling and Jones won't get many appearances at CB. We'll have to get games at RB. Don't think it is an immediate necessity.

I would like us to sign a midfielder in the Javi Martinez mode, some one who can play in place of Carrick and can also cover defense if needed. I hate the yearly two games where Carrick plays at CB.

It would be interesting to see how Fergie manages the attacking 4 positions. At this time we have:

Rooney, Van Persie, Hernandez, Welbeck, Nani, Young, Valencia, Zaha, Kagawa and Giggs.

That's 10 players. May be 9, if we see Giggs as a cover for the midfield too. That's one player too many in my opinion.

I'd expect us to go for Bale, if he's available. Maybe swap Lewandowski for Rooney. And, of course, bring in a central midfielder.

Anderson to go. With every passing week that he doesn't sign a new contract, Nani is edging towards the exit. And Rooney to finally pay the price of his little contretemps with SAF two years ago.

See, this is one thing I don't understand about English football. In Europe players of all ages are loaned out to clubs in their domestic league, yet in the PL it's pretty rare. If the player needs playing time, loan him out. We can't keep 3 players happy fighting over 1 position of which 1 player is undropable.

So for me its either loan Fabio out, or loan Buttner out. I'd prefer we keep Fabio next season and actually use him. He's played very well for QPR and deserves to be given some game time next season. That also allows us to rest Evra more.

Meanwhile Buttner can go out on loan and prove himself capable.

I wouldn't mind sending Fabio on loan to a club from abroad. Benfica were supposed to be interested last Summer and they'd have been a perfect destination for him, such a shame he went to Queens Park instead. If they still want him then send him there, or to a club like Sporting, Ajax, Sevilla or Schalke - simply a good club from abroad that'll play him and help him develop.

Rafael's fitness has been top notch this season and whoever we may be able to bring to cover for him won't get many games. I reckon Fabio could well feature on both flanks but his long-term future is certainly on the left (he did look like a proper player on the right in the CL run-in in 2011 though).

Jones and Smalling may not be long term options there but they can cover the position just fine. Same goes for Valencia really. I'm curious what's going to happen with him, we've been saying for a while that the drop of form is only temporary and he'll get over it but there are only 13 games left in the season for us at most and he's not showing any signs of imminent improvement.

Yup. It might be harsh on him but I can't see Buttner turning into Man Utd quality.

Not harsh at all. Players don't suddenly improve enough to be starting for a big club at 24 or 25 that often at all. There are some cases - for example Giuly I think, but they are few and far between.

Not a bad post, but we aren't static, we don't always play with two strikers and two wide men... I think 10 can be used as Zaha/Giggs won't expect as many games... Valencia is a spare (Insert position here)... I can see it working.. we don't need anyone attacking wise.

No clue who we will buy obviously but if Nani goes we'll need a replacement on a similar level to him. I also think we could use a left back, and central defender seems to be a position we're consistently linked with. Central midfield will need an addition because I can't see both Scholes and Fletcher both staying, I wouldn't be surprised if both were gone.

We don't need a lot of additions but I feel if we add two too quality players then we could push on to another level.

Let's cut through all the bollocks.

Ronaldo isn't coming. As far as he is concerned he is already home. Rooney isn't leaving. He was dropped for about 70 minutes of one game. Get over it.

Zaha and Fabio are joining up. Nani is the only major player I can see with a realistic chance of fecking off.

The size of our squad will already be around 25.

I agree with what kps88 said. I think it will be a quiet summer unless a big name becomes available (basically like RvP)

Wanyama's contract expires 2014 and he's already said he isn't renewing, he'll be sold in the summer and probably at a cut price, can see that one having some legs to it.

Apart from that, I think we'll only sign players if players leave. And I don't see anyone leaving.

That's not cutting through the bollocks that's adding more bollocks, you're speculating as much as anyone else.

It amazes me that after the signing of Van Persie that people here can still gate with certainy we won't sign a player for a certain just because we already have players that play there. If a player can improve us then the manager will go for him.

Amos has to leave, we cannot have 3 senior goalkeepers with present squad limit. I cannot see Macheda staying either, he has no future at United and I reckon Scholes is gone at this level as well. Fletcher's comeback is doubtful to say the least too.

We'll have one or two places for new players easily. And I expect us to sign one or two as well.

Oh, and I can see Lindegaard leaving. At 29 he might want to become first choice somewhere and it's not going to happen to him at United with de Gea around. We could get a decent fee I imagine, £5m or so.

I dunno, I think valencia's started looking somewhat more confident again the last three or four games. Definitely been better than he has for most of the season.

Speculating that he wants to stay at Madrid?

Yes, such speculation. Not like he said it himself a huge 2 days ago or anything.

Be realistic. Ronaldo isn't coming. It's nice to dream and I even think it's a possibility in a few years time. But whilst he is still this good, he is Madrid's.

With Scholes and Anderson possibly leaving, I suspect that this will be the window that we make that big midfield purchase everyone has been screaming for.

I've heard we're sniffing around Jonathan Williams at Palace, and I'd hope we're monitoring Will Hughes at Derby. Both very exciting young midfield talents.

Does anyone else think that Ashley Young maybe on his way out?

I know he was injured, but he has been on the bench and hasn't been given that many chances. With Ferguson again trusting Nani and Kagawa's wonderful performance at Norwich plus Giggs being Giggs again, I don't see him playing that much this season.

Nah, I think Fergie like Young more than the fans do, I reckon he does what he's told to tactically.

I doubt the money we'd get for Young would make it worth moving him on. After all, I think it's pretty unlikely a top side is going to want him.

Yeah true, but with the World Cup in 2014, he might want to play regular football to seal his place for Brazil.

Who is around for our 25 man squad next year?

De Gea
Amos
Lindegaard

Rafael
Smalling
Jones

Ferdinand
Vidic
Evans

Buttner
Fabio
Evra

Nani
Young
Valencia
Giggs

Anderson
Carrick
Scholes
Fletcher
Cleverley

Rooney
RVP
Welbeck
Hernandez
Macheda

That's exactly 26, with Zaha and Powell both not having to be registered. I'd say at least Macheda and Scholes will be gone from that list :(

Would Petrucci/Lingard etc need to be included next year? (If they make the step up to the first team). Not sure what their ages are.

So yeah, Scholes and Macheda will be off surely. I'd say Buttner/Fabio will go out on loan again. We won't need 3 left backs.

I'd say Fletcher/Anderson won't be included. One of them. I can definitely see us signing a midfielder this Summer.

Fowards - we are fine.
Wingers - we are fine. Even if Nani is off, I'm happy with Valencia, Zaha, Young and Giggs (plus Welbeck).
Defence - Perfect
GK - Perfect.

midfield is the only area we need to strengthen

only way I see us signing anyone else will be if it is young prospect or top drawer talent that comes available

midfield does need some considerable work

If Scholes retires(again), well then we'll have to bring somebody else in. If he doesn't, well then I wouldn't be surprised if go another summer without signing a CM.

Other than that, I can only see us bringing in a CB, unless somebody like Nani goes. Zaha will be arriving and we'll be getting Fabio back.

I'll resist the urge to talk about central midfield: Assuming there are no outgoings in other areas I think we are fairly well served, especially as Fabio will come back stronger. If we have the money then Bale or Ronaldo would take us to the next level but we've already shown we are better than Real and we're clearly the best team in England, there's not much more we need to do considering we are well stocked for the future and have Zaha arriving as well. Central midfield on the other hand.............

I think Anderson will be moved on and Scholes will retire.

Still don't think we'll bring in a CM though.

Nah, he's been decent for us and I reckon he's going to get games on the wing next season. It's not like there's that much competition for a spot in England squad, he should be fine in regards to World Cup anyway.

Then again he's English so would likely command a decent fee. Teams like West Ham, Newcastle or Sunderland would gladly pay £10m+ for Young.

Yes but it's still far off the Valencia from last season or 2010-11. He was very solid and consistent back then which was his main asset because even at his best he was a good but not a world class winger.
