Summer Signings (Not including central midfield)

IF Nani is leaving, and I dont want him to, then we have already filled his position with Zaha.

Disagree, if Nani leaves we'll still have a space for another winger. Our wing options would be: Valencia, Young and Zaha. Zaha is basically filling in for Giggs position in the squad.

Who is around for our 25 man squad next year?

De Gea
Amos
Lindegaard

Rafael
Smalling
Jones

Ferdinand
Vidic

Buttner
Fabio
Evra

Nani
Young
Valencia
Giggs

Anderson
Carrick
Scholes
Fletcher
Cleverley

Rooney
RVP
Welbeck
Hernandez
Macheda

That's exactly 25, with Zaha and Powell both not having to be registered. I'd say at least Macheda and Scholes will be gone from that list :(

Add Fletcher

Nani signs contract

We sell Valencia

We sign Bale

I can't see that either Chief - not with Carrick, Cleverley, Scholes, Ando, and Powell in the mix. If we lose Ando, i could see Fergie making a move for Strootman, but that's a big IF.

We'll lose Scholes and Powell will probably go on loan.

I can't see us not signing a midfielder this Summer, although I said that last Summer, and the year before, and before, but this Summer we're going to be very short of options, more so than ever before.

We need a midfielder, it's the missing link. We're fine everywhere else, assuming nobody leaves.

But we have been using Rooney, Kagawa and Welbeck on the wings. That isnt likely to change.

Yeah and we once tried for Ronaldinho, so we'll have one of those. Plus we tried for Benzema so we'll probably sign him. Oh and we tried to sign Pastore and Pato, so we'll probably want one of them...

I didn't mean we'd try to buy Lucas and Hazard, just someone in the same mould - a young but recognised and expensive match winner. We obviously won' get Hazard or Lucas.

A couple of player will leave - Scholes, Macheda, Amos and Fletcher won't be on the final list.

But we have been using Rooney, Kagawa and Welbeck on the wings. That isnt likely to change.

Again, no. None of them have played as wingers, they've played as wide forwards. There's a difference. Although Kagawa fails to play that role well and tends to drift inside in his normal AM slot anyway. Which is what he did against Norwich.

Before you ask...

Wingers = players that stay wide and put in crosses.
Wide Forwards = players that tuck in and play closer to the CF.

The question is why haven't we been using our wingers much this season and the answer to that question is that their collective form has been poor. So we've adapted our tactics to play with wide forwards instead. I think we're more effective playing with Wingers as it stretches the opposition and allows our fullbacks to overlap. But having said that, it's a problem picking formations when you have 4 class CF's.

You're also gambling on whether Zaha will be ready for Premiership football. I think he'll be sent out on loan to a PL team next season ala Evans, Welbeck. So imo, we have a space for a recognised Winger and my choice would be Rodriguez.

Winger and CM. The two most genuine weaknesses for completely different reasons over the last 6 months.

If Nani (or another winger) leaves, Zaha isn't enough of a replacement just yet so a winger would be necessary. CM needs no explanation, just break the bank before you head off to UEFA Mr. Gill.

Buttner will be sent out on loan probably as well, my hunch will be Zaha will follow suit if a PL team goes for him.

We'll have plenty of space.

Buttner is 24, loan would be pointless I think. We'll keep him or sell him and if we do loan him it'll be with a view for a permanent move.

Reckon that if we go for a central midfielder, it'll be one that is under 21 to get around the squad limit issue... perhaps the likes of Will Hughes from Derby.

Can see one of the forwards being sold... whether that's Rooney or Hernandez I'm not sure... Macheda and Bebe are basically out of the door already.

Amos will be sold I suspect. Buttner may well go out on loan, as may Powell and Henriquez again. Zaha may follow, although it wouldn't surprise me if he spent the year with us getting experience as Powell has this year. We may see the likes of Januzaj being integrated into the first team picture as well as Michael Keane.

To be honest, I really don't see space for new players, other than maybe one in central midfield as Scholes retires. The club are expecting Fletcher back, so we should too. That then leaves Carrick, Cleverley, Anderson, Giggs, Fletcher, Powell and perhaps Jones in central midfield... which is a fair amount of options. I think it will be a quiet summer.

See, this is one thing I don't understand about English football. In Europe players of all ages are loaned out to clubs in their domestic league, yet in the PL it's pretty rare. If the player needs playing time, loan him out. We can't keep 3 players happy fighting over 1 position of which 1 player is undropable.

So for me its either loan Fabio out, or loan Buttner out. I'd prefer we keep Fabio next season and actually use him. He's played very well for QPR and deserves to be given some game time next season. That also allows us to rest Evra more.

Meanwhile Buttner can go out on loan and prove himself capable.

I don't think you understood my comment, I meant 'Add Fletcher' by adding him to the list of people NOT to be included in the 25 man squad :)

Well there's a reason I didn't understand it, because it made no sense.

I believe what you were looking for was "remove Fletcher".

My guesses:

De Gea
Lindegaard
Amos

Lindegaard leaving, Amos stays as back-up.

Rafael
Fabio
Evra
Buttner
Vidic
Evans
Rio
Smalling
Jones
Keane

No changes as Fabio is injury-prone, Buttner will get Cup games and Jones will be used in midfield. Fabio obviously added to the mix and Keane too, who has enjoyed a cracking half-season so far at Leicester.

Valencia
Nani
Young
Zaha
Giggs
Carrick
Cleverley
Anderson

Scholes
Fletcher
Kagawa
Powell

Nani will (unfortunately) be sold, Scholes retires, Fletcher won't be registered either. Anderson gets another season, Powell will be loaned out.

RVP
Rooney
Hernandez
Welbeck

Henriquez
Macheda
Keane

Henriquez gets another loan, Macheda will be sold, Will Keane to be loaned out too after his injury.

So, leaving: Lindegaard, Nani, Scholes, Fletcher, Powell, Henriquez, Macheda, Keane

Registered players: 21
We're in need of a CM obviously, possibly a winger... well, that's it. Pretty sure we'll make one high-profile signing in the Hazard, Moura mould as we were in for that type of player last year.

I can see us getting Strootman and then promoting the likes of Powell into the squad, and even possibly Michael Keane.

If we sell Nani, will we make a bid for Bale?

A midfielder or two, and Ronaldo if he somehow is available.

If Ronaldo comes (which is very unlikely), I can see Nani and someone else from the attacking players leaving. If we buy more than a midfielder, Ando will go.

No need for CB at the moment. Fabio will challenge Evra, while Zaha probably will be sent to loan.

Michael Keane and even Powell will get a prem loan next season, probably.

We'll buy a good in the air type big defender to replace Vidic in the long term from the links we are getting.

Also, Keeping both Buttner and Fabio along with Evra will be a bit strange.

Doubt that pretty much tbh.

Why are you being pedantic? You don't disagree with my point, this is unlike you but meh...

No, what I said made complete sense, there isn't a reason you didn't understand other than you misinterpreted it.

I'd say at least Macheda and Scholes will be gone from that list

Was the comment that I replied to, saying
Add Fletcher

As in adding Fletcher to the list that will be gone from the 25 man squad.

You've missed Kagawa off that list Twigg.

If Nani goes, and I hope he doesn't, then a winger. Other than that we are well stocked in every area other than midfield. If a promising youngster becomes available we might go after him regardless of where he plays but that's probably about it.

Maybe, but we won't just spend money on a player because RedCafe perceives him to be a 'marquee' signing, as KM expects. These sort of players that you are on about don't grow on trees either. I suspect if there is a future star available to us then we will always be interested at the right price. Anyone could have said Lucas and Hazard were potentially stars, but I think you'd be hard pushed to think of other names that are available to us this summer, at a reasonable price.

So are you telling me that Ferguson won't look at the transfer forum to decide on his transfer targets?

I hope not. He doesn't suit Barca because he's technically inferior to the rest of their squad.

I'd say it's more so he doesn't suit their style of play, he's too direct for them.

I think he'd be a great buy for us and he probably wouldn't cost remotely what we reportedly offered for him two summers ago.

I agree. I can see that happening.

Fabio's contract expires in 2014. Won't be surprised if he doesn't want to renew his contract.

To me, Buttner always seemed like a stop-gap back up while we sent Fabio on loan to get proper game time. I can see him going on loan too.

Yup. It might be harsh on him but I can't see Buttner turning into Man Utd quality.
