Steven Gerrard Autobiography | Extracts

His comments on Rafa's rant are ace. Can't be going down well on Rawk who think Rafa is some sort of martyr.

What did he say?

I still think Rafas ridiculous FACHTS rant that season basically cost them the league

Gerrard admits it. it was embarrassing for him to watch on TV and there was no need whatsoever for it as they were top of the league. Then when meeting up with England, the united players told him Fergie was laughing about it, saying that he had him

For more than 26 years, I had always felt compelled to show fire towards them. They were the enemy.Their shirt is the only one I won't allow in my house. I have a big collection of shirts I've swapped with other players from different clubs — but not one from United.

Bitter, bitter feck!

Does he think anyone apart from him really gives a flying feck what shirts he has in his collection

I have a big collection of shirts- " .

In his first book there's a bit where he explains his absolute hatred for us. Then asks why do we hate, them? My uncle has it, I'll have a look for it

I don’t know whether it was a dig at Liverpool or something more personal — but my overall perception was the DJ was doing some muscle-flexing by refusing to play Phil Collins.

My guess is it was a decision designed to focus attention on him, his way of saying: ‘This is me. I’m in charge.’ So I twatted him.

 Well done

I'll pay the mortgage off of anyone who gets through the audiobook if its read by the author.

Meh, he's right about most things. He comes of as an arrogant cnut but so what? Many people are. The fact that he was a great footballer doesn't take that right away from him.

He thinks it was embarrassing and it backfired. A pretty sensible conclusion. I don't know why people are having a go at him for that.

Wow. I'm surprised by that, but ultimately he is spot on. Liverpool were great that season, beat all the top sides, they had one blip after Rafa's rant and that cost them. United's unbelievable consistency against 'the rest' was enough to get them the title. hilarious really

The "MEMEMEME" attitude and ridiculously grandiose language aside, it actually looks like a decent biography. I mean, he talks about the stuff we all want to know, and he does see to be pretty honest and forthright about most things.

It would not be my style if I were to ever become a manager — I'd try to fuse the best of Rafa's tactical thinking with Brendan's skill as a man-manager.

That comes across as ridiculously like David Brent's "I've sort of fused Flashdance with some MC Hammer shit"

Even when he might be right - and I suspect that he is right about the likes of Pearce and Rodgers making 'tough' decisions for effect - he still comes across as very self-centred. Not a good thing...As someone who seems to have designs on management, ideally he should realise how bloody tough the job must be on occasion.

it's more amusing that Liverpool fecked themselves over, and he clearly has issues with their precious Rafa

Ouch

But we all knew after that Fergie had got him

Hilarious to think of Utd players saying that to Gerard though
Fergie was a mind games master...But the Pool fans still refuse to believe that played a part in their collapse...I remember the first part of the season, and Liverpool were absolutely flying..that statement 5-1 win at Newcastle being the cherry on the cake...We were worried..they were Liverpool..

not arsed to read anything he has to say. He is your typical scouse thug who was a very good footballer.

Thats it.

...and I still laugh at his slip that caused the scum to lose a title they should have won.

Pretty much this. Imagine him without his talent

Wow, great read, thanks for sharing.

But seriously what the hell is he writing another autobiography for? Since his last one he hasn't achieved anything but poor results and misfortune on the pitch but here he is writing about it.

You almost have to admire him for that.

While it's surely true that his publisher might nudge him into spicing some incidents up, minor stuff like the Parker/Pearce thing barely register on the interest or controversy levels; it only succeeds in making Gerrad look worse, even if he's actually correct. It's not as if he'd struggle to get a publishing deal, so he could certainly insist on some editorial control...so why include self-damaging stuff like that? There's only one real conclusion.

Nobody should ever feel sorry for this twatt waffle. He fluked a CL trophy. He should be satisfied with that and an FA cup against a mid table team.

Ya woe is Gerrard.

Go away.

Liverpool didn't actually collapse, though. If anything, they were better after the rant than before it (Scoring a lot more, an ever-so-slight increase in points per game). There's really nothing to suggest that Rafa's rant had any real effect on their form, no matter how funny it is to imagine that it had.

Not really.. see here: http://www.skysports.com/liverpool-results/2008-09

The press conference was on the 9th of Jan, look at their results for the rest of that month and February, especially compared to before that. They finished well from March , but it did affect them.

I see a continuation of their form from before the rant. They'd drawn four in seven before it, and went on to draw four and lose one in the seven after it, with the only shocking result being the loss to Portsmouth. Their overall form, however, improved. Hypothetically speaking, the players might have found Rafa's rant embarrassing enough that they were ashamed of playing for him (leading to their poor run of form being extended), but it was hardly a collapse.

They had all the momentum with them after December though, and I remember it feeling that way too..Their form only improved in March though..when it was too late, classic Liverpool..

And seeing their captain say it too, it is bound to have some effect..Its not equivalent to the Newcastle collapse certainly, but it was enough to deny them the title seeing as they only finished 4 points behind us that season.

Soon after the reduced contract offer had been made, the club asked me to appear in an advert for Nivea. It was clear I was still important to Liverpool off the field.

I turned it down. Jordan Henderson stepped in and when I saw the ad on television I was relieved. Doing those kind of ads just isn’t me. I’ve had tons of offers to advertise products bare-chested and I’ve always said no. Maybe that’s why, unlike most leading players, I’ve never asked for an image rights deal with Liverpool.
He had the common sense to turn down that godawful Nivea ad at least!
