Steven Gerrard Autobiography | Extracts

 my favourite one. I can actually picture it.

So can I. Definitely mumbled it to himself in his office with a glass of whiskey/wine in his paw.

Then he went back to detailing how to ruin Hargreaves career with experimental medical procedures.

Disagree.

If he really wanted to prove himself and win the title rather than thinking he can haul Liverpool over the line himself (which is why he stayed cuz his own ego is MASSIVE) he'd have left and joined Chelsea to win the prem

Never felt sorry for him

Can't stand the man.

By that logic Robson should have left for Liverpool or Everton or whoever were dominating at the time.

Robbo got his league title in the end though.......Two in fact.

Along with 3 or 4 FA cups, a league cup, European cup winners cup and Super Cup.

Not bad in the end :)

He did, but he was far from the force he was when he finally got the league titles. Not comparing Gerrard to Robbo by the way, just don't understand criticism of his loyalty.

The big difference is Robbo played for the team first, Gerrard clearly played for his own glory.

What Phurry said....

Also, Robbo is one of the nicest guys you could meet.....Except for the whole, "Roy, wait your chance to get him and then do him" :D

I remember when I first met Luis in person, he was skulking near the old wooden bleachers section of Anfield. There he was, impeccably dressed in a suit of sky blue with the cravat of gold - the colours of an illustrious mountain land he hails from - and the first thing he said to me was (paraphrasing): "E scusa capitano glad to bee hear". Flinching, he was, and I remember his lips were chafed raw, like a penalty area. Didn't think much of it at the time, but it left a nibbling sensation that our field communication might suffer due to language barrier. History has set my doubts to rest (...) we had a scincillating partnership whose fruits I still yearn to reap. If only that moist grass mound had been trimmed properly! But now I'm gone, Suarez iz gone and gone is the old bleachers section; it collapsed on itself one wet October day.

I hope this image is alright to post:

Author Donald McRae is helping Gerrard write “My Story.” McRae promises the book will include some of Gerrard’s views on some of the biggest names in the soccer world.

“It’s been a pleasure and a privilege working with Steven Gerrard on his autobiography,” McRae said on his website, according to The Liverpool Echo. “I am writing the book, but Gerrard leads us through every exhilarating high and bruising low of his 27 years at Liverpool. It is a career full of contrast and drama.

“Many of the goals are incredible while the biggest games are riveting. His very public long goodbye is often painful, always moving. But the grittier, far more private details are the most powerful. The cast of characters offer intriguing and revealing insights into the addictive soap-opera of modern football –- from Luis Suárez to Brendan Rogers, José Mourinho to Rafa Benítez, Paolo Maldini to Andea Pirlo, Fernando Torres to Raheem Sterling, the list is richly varied.”

Apart from the general "me me me" nature of the book, Gerrard seems to come across as having a far more interesting personality than he came across on TV.

By criticizing Benitez and praising Hodgson he may as well have defecated on Liverpool fans so that has been amusing as well.

its too good to be true, something to laugh about every snippet that comes out

Rafa Benitez has accused Steven Gerrard of lying about their relationship in order to sell his new book.

The former Liverpool and England captain claimed that although he and Benitez worked well together, the Spaniard never liked him "as a person".

"I don't think Rafa Benitez liked me as a person. I'm not sure why, but that's the feeling I got from him," wrote Gerrard in his new book, My Story, serialised in the Daily Mail.

But the Real Madrid manager has hit back at the 35-year-old, insisting the claims are just a publicity stunt.

"I have read the quotes and I believe he is wrong," Benitez said on Spanish television.

"Out of the respect that I have for Stevie and for the value and appreciation I have for him, and for Liverpool and the supporters, I think it's best to just let it pass.

"He has brought out a book and now I'm the Real Madrid manager, that sells."

Gerrard also labelled his old manager "stupid" for selling midfielder Xabi Alonso and said he was "embarrassed" by his 'facts' rant, but Benitez chose not to respond to those comments.

It's kind of odd how now that Gerrard has moved onto the MLS, Rafa treats him as some minor hanger-on - "I'm the Real Madrid manager". It wasn't that long ago that he was a flop at Napoli and Inter and was speaking out in the press about loads of inane stuff like Mourinho and how Liverpool was ran now that he was gone.

I just developed a bit of respect for the waiter for rising above the bullshit.

For all of Benitezs faults, I do think he has genuine affection for Liverpool ( both the club and the city). I recall some of the Hillsborough families speaking quite well of him.

Fair play to Benitez for rising above it to an extent, but he doesn't say they were great mates, either. And perhaps he's saving stuff up for his own book.

Benitez is just a cold fish & quite a shrewd operator, except when he goes potty, obv.

Sure they have both donated to the Hillsborough Group.

"I believe he is wrong."

Odd choice of words, if nothing else.
I'd say he's acknowledging that they weren't best mates but the idea of a strained relationship is probably poetic licence. Seems to me that the book is mirroring the SAF / Keane fall out. Its a nice literary device; success (CL for Liverpool / dominance for United) despite the manager and captain not getting along.

He's also admitted in this same auto-biography that that coldness from Benitez may have made him a better player. But he still calls him a poor man-manager and whines nonetheless. Some players are so wrapped up in their own little worlds they can't see the forest for the trees. If he ever goes into management himself, he'll have a few rude shocks.

He was also a transfer negotiator wth failed bids for Toni Kroos and Willian. Just read he quotes here and laugh. Remember when tapping up was a thing? Liverpool must surely be worried about this news...

‘I had an unofficial role at the club, trying to persuade some great players to join Liverpool,’ Gerrard wrote in My Story. ‘It was the same ritual every summer. The club would let me know which long-shot target they had in mind and then ask me to contact him. They thought that a request to consider moving to Liverpool would have more impact coming from me.

‘In 2013, the latest player in our sights was Willian, the Brazilian midfielder. I followed the usual routine when approaching a star player we wanted to sign. Instead of calling him directly I always sent a text. It seemed more respectful and allowed the player to read my message at a time when it suited him best. A cold call felt wrong.

‘I slipped into the groove with Willian. I said hello and hoped he didn’t mind me contacting him directly. I stressed how much I admired him as a player and then, having mentioned that I knew Liverpool were speaking to his agent, I used the standard line: ‘If you need to chat or ask any questions I’m available at any time.

‘It was the opening move in a familiar game. The reply came in and the same old conversation started. Willian thanked me and he said the usual, along the lines of, ‘I’d love to play with you, Steven, blah-blah-blah, but there are other clubs who play in the Champions League I need to talk to as well.’ I knew Spurs and Chelsea were also very keen on Willian. So I answered him and said, of course, I understood. But I then went in with my sales pitch. ‘I think Liverpool would be a great move for you. The fans are amazing, the history is there and we’re building a good team. You could do something great here – and we’d love to have you.’

‘I meant it, too, because the club only asked for my help if it was with a player I rated. But I always tried to persuade with honesty and respect and never mentioned anything about the player’s financial situation or the contract he could expect from Liverpool. The next text from Willian was so obvious I could have written it for him even before I read it. He again said that it would be great to play in the same team as me but ‘I’m not sure Liverpool can give me the Champions League.’ He went to Chelsea.

‘It was a game of texting ping-pong that had only small differences each time. Occasionally a player would say his wife or girlfriend preferred the idea of living in London, Madrid or Paris. The clear message was that there were fancier shops and swankier restaurants in bigger cities than Liverpool. I knew then that the deal was dead.

‘Our target in 2014 was ridiculously optimistic. Brendan asked me to take a crack at trying to talk Toni Kroos into signing for Liverpool. He smiled when I said we’d be p*****g into the wind with this one. We both admired Kroos immensely. I knew Real Madrid were gearing up to make Bayern Munich an offer and so I felt a bit awkward when I texted Kroos. The German was on his way to winning the World Cup with his country and Real were the champions of Europe. But God loves a trier, and so I gave it a whirl.

‘Some of the best footballers in the world can also be the most respectful. Kroos didn’t make me feel like I was a total idiot. But, of course, he would soon sign for Real Madrid. We had a nice little exchange of texts and I said well done and good luck.’

If I imagined a United fan writing a parody biography for Gerrard, some of these quotes would probably be too ridiculous to include.

Its great isnt it? Its like everybody is being trolled here.

http://sportwitness.ning.com/forum/topics/former-liverpool-player-accuses-gerrard-of-being-a-racist

“We all saw how he made life difficult for Mario Balotelli at Liverpool. I warned him. Liverpool isn’t a team that accepts black people unless they are English.

“It’s common knowledge. Gerrard has never liked black people. When I was at Liverpool, I showed him I was black, that I wasn’t English, but that I'm no pushover. All the time I was there, he never dared looked me in the eye.”

Diouf's an idiot. Maybe its less to do with his skin colour and more to do with the fact he was a massive dickhead?

Although, Gerrard's defense of Suarez does make sense hearing that.
