Is he better then Smalling though?
 
If we are looking for ball playing CB then we should sign him (if we offload any CB).
 
I don't really follow Serie A or Lazio for that matter so does anyone know why is he not renewing with Lazio? Does Lazio not deem him good enough? Or injury issues? Or is he just opting not to renew to move on to a bigger club?

Lazio withdrew their offer of a renewal due to the player showing no desire to renew.
 
Add De Vrij on a free, bring back Tuanzebe from loan and sell Blind and Smalling. Commit the proceeds too funding a higher tier of midfield replacements for Carrick and Fellaini.
 
Smalling out 30-35 million (arsenal)
Blind out for 10-15 million (anyone)
Darmian out for 10-15 million (juve interested)
Ask rojo to sign contract or sell him for 30-35 million to PSG

That is about 100 million euros if we sell rojo, 60 million if sell other three only.
I would sign
De vrij (free)
Alex sandro (50 million)
IF Rojo leaves 50 million free to spend on skrinrar or Koulibally
 
Apparently Rojo is wanted by PSG.Arsene loves Smalling. Sell Blind too even Darmian.
That should fetch 25+35+15+10 = 85 mill Euros.

Buy De Vrij for free and then invest in a top top CB, someone like Alderweireld and good RB.Think we can buy Alderweireld and Meunier for 50+40-50 mill so nearly 90 which is almost balanced out by the sales.

That leaves us with Bailly, Jones, Alderweireld, De Vrij, Lindelof and Tuanzebe as CBs, Meunier, Valencia as RBs and Shaw,Young as LBs.Young can step in as RB if needed and maybe buy a LB.

This would mean even if we buy Sandro for 60 mill, we would have transformed our defense into a near world class one with a net spend of about 70 million.

Shaw - Jones - Bailly - Valencia

TO

Sandro - Alderweireld - Bailly - Meunier

Buy two CMs (Jorginho and Kovacic) for 100 million and I think we are good to go

Yeah, as mentioned above, you don’t need to splash out £50m - £100m per player, every time you need to recruit. Also Aldeweireld has a contract until 2019 iirc. So 1 more year left on his deal (though I can see Madrid trying to go for him as well as they’ve not quite replaced the loss of Pepe).

Imagine Aldeweireld and de Vrij in and we sell 2. It would be a close to zero net spend, meaning we can use most of our summer transfer budget to strengthen midfield/Fullback - wherever else the manager prioritizes.

De Vrij in on a free would allow us to sell Smalling to Arsenal (£20-£25 million) and Rojo to whoever (£30-£35 million) then promote Tuanzebe, maybe sign Maguire IF we sell Blind.
 
I haven't seen this guy play except some matches for the national team some while back. How good is he compared to other CB in the Serie A? (Koulibaly/Bonucci/Chiellini/Romagnoli)
 
De Vrij on a free would be pretty decent business, allowing extra funds for elsewhere. In fairness we may need it if trying to deal with Spurs.

Cant see Levy accepting a low ball offer of 30-40 million for Alderweirald somehow even with his contract issues.

(And shaking my head at saying 30/40 million is low ball these days but when you have Liverpool spending 75 million and City spending about 60 million per defender then I cant see why Spurs wouldnt at least chance their arm).
 
Upgrade on Smalling for free and probably happy with Smallings wages.

Sell Smalling for £30m and that's excellent business. Sell Blind for £15m and between the two you have Alderweirelds price tag.

Smalling and Blind out De vrij and Alderweireld in for £0-5m fee would be unbelievable.

Try Swap Rojo (if rumours are true) for Meunier.
 
On a free he's a no brainer. He'll be a good partner for Lindelof and Bailly which would allow us to sell Smalling, Rojo + give Tuanzebe a 1 year loan elswhere.
 
Would take him in a free. And then sell one (or both) of Rojo and Smalling. Blind also should leave considering that Jose doesn't rate him.

We need to spend big in left and right back in the next 18 months, so it would be a good idea to actually get a good CB for free.
 
He's free ffs. Definitely an upgrade on any of our centrebacks barring Bailly based on this season's form. We should have thrown all the money at Goretzka as well but instead went out and got a left-winger, the only position apart from GK where we probably didn't need an upgrade.
 
Jones is English and he's got great facial expressions, Tuanzebe is homegrown, Smalling is also English and he's very tall, Bailly is a good defender, Lindelof is a bit meah in defending but his distribution of the ball is mint. However I never understood Rojo. Why the hell we keep the guy. He stinks of average from miles away. The only defender I can think of that is more useless then him is Darmian.
 
I've said it quite a few times in the 'what do we need' thread.
On a free, this guy would be one of our better defenders if he could adapt to the Premier League.

Being able to upgrade our defence for free means more money to spend on other position.
And like others have said, with some of the dross we have in defence, it helps towards an overhaul

In all honesty, Smalling, Rojo, Blind, Darmian can all leave for me. I'd like to give Lindelof another season.

I've always likened him to Hodor in GOT ie he's big, strong and one dimensional. Which is quite a fitting combination since he's always with Jones whom does reminds me a bit of Bran.
 
I hear people saying he's a good ball playing CB which is good - how is his actual defensive game? Fast, strong, positioning, tackling? What's he bad at?
 
Another slightly above average and injury prone defender with no leadership qualities.

No brainer on a free. Is definitely better than Smalling right now and still has room to grow.

He really isn't better than Smalling. A bit better on the ball, but everything else he's a shadow of a player. Averages around 25 games a year, so maybe could take Jones slot...

Lot better on the ball. I rate Smalling as better defender though.

I think it's just a rumour. Maybe he is waiting till the end of the season to see which team is in CL and who offers bigger wages plus slot in starting 11.

All Italian media outlets are running with the story. I know most of them are quite wank but they do get some things right sometimes. I read just this morning that Inter and De Vrij's agent already have a deal sorted out for a 5 year deal with a base salary of 4.2m per year + bonus. But yes, Barca, Chelsea, and Atleti are supposed to have made enquiries too.
 
You don't just sell all of your defenders in one window, lads!
 
I honestly don't know how good De Vrij is, but I wouldn't want him simply because he can be signed on the cheap.

Why would Arsenal buy Smalling for £25 million when they can just as easily buy De Vrij for free ourselves.
