Personally, I'm not a fan of the EU apart from a few things, but buying the franchise and immediately killing it was a bad sign. Especially when there was popular stuff that would've made for great content like Kyle Katarn's story and Mara Jade.
They always saw value in it but hated it because it was pre-Disney. Just like they hate the first 6 films, but they couldn't kill them like the EU. What everything pre-Disney is to them is a safety net. When their own stuff fails, they bring something back. They'd rather that stuff be forgotten about, but, they keep needing to bring it back to keep the remaining goodwill they have left in tact.
If all of their own stuff had took off, you'd barely see anything from the Lucas era. However, because everything they've done has come nowhere the popularity of the Lucas stuff apart from Grogu, they begrudgingly bring stuff back. They don't bring the stuff back to honour the story or make entertaining content, though. They bring it back to to put out the fires their stuff causes and then to further their idea of what Star Wars should be.
Disney have had Star Wars for just over a decade, with their first piece of content being less than a decade old, and the apathy towards the franchise is something none of us would've predicted. It's a remarkable achievement to do what they've done to the fanbase in under a decade after everyone was seemingly on the same page after TFA.
