Television Star Trek

A space exploration show that doesn't focus on space or exploration. So disappointed with season two, this isn't what you sign up for when you think Star Trek or Picard.

Well, it started off alright but its went down hill. The writing is dire. The characters are dire, and for people who supposed to be career federation they dont have a single clue what professionalism is. Raffi has been reduced to an emotional woman trope that just cant get a hold of her self. Im watching this and thinking back to 90s trek and everyone being professional most of the time. Q Who, 18 people die. Sonja gomez, and Ensign in struggling with it. But its Geordie that tells her to pull it together because shit still has to get done. And she does. It was a moment for a young and inexperienced officer. Raffi is supposed to a commander, yet shes losing her shit all over the place. Just an awful character.

And what is with everyone having a tragic back story?? Is this supposed to give the characters depth? Because it doesnt. It makes them a joke. Where are the young bright eyed young hopefuls who grew up inspired and wanted to have their own adventures? Urgh. I hate Kurtzman and his shitty writing. No trek was better than this dog shit.

I think, the point of the storyline, is that everything is bleak in their world and the alternate universe is even more so.

Time travelling back to earth in what was the period of their most depressing time before first contact, is also another negative pulling them down.

It's just one negative after another and no doubt will get more so next week.

I do feel that Q will be the best and most interesting aspect of this and I hope that there will be a twist at the end in terms of him maybe being the good guy, but let's see.

That girl though, the science one, they should have killed her last season, she is annoying.

Raffi, is acting like she lost her child, I suspect there was something unhealthy going on with those two the way she is reacting.

If this really is the case, Alex Kurtzman needs to stop immediately before the whole thing reaches Discovery in terms of facepalm.

There isn't any other logical explanation for her reaction.

I mean, did she act this way for everyone she lost in a Red Jersey?

She would be in a permanent break down.

I tend to agree. I've been binging on random TOS episodes lately and there's something fundamentally attractive about the simplicity of a captain in a ship encountering different problems that are what made Trek over the years. We're not seeing any of that in any of the newer Trek shows. Bring back Brannon Braga, Manny Coto and the others to get it back on track.

This show could be entering permanent breakdown since no logical explanation becoming Alex Kurtzman thing.

Anyway, not so long ago Picard was this close to having sex with a Romulan, so safe to say you're probably right !

Raffi and Agnes are terrible characters that are dragging the show down imo. Sort of like the ditzy red head in Discovery. In fact I see similarities between her and Agnes, which makes me wonder if the same writer may be behind both.

Exactly, I know now most shows focus on a single interconnected arc per season now but modern Trek just isn't Trek, with Picard season 2 barely even featuring space. I don't mind an isolated episode time travelling to the past, but don't make that the series.

I do have hope strange new worlds however, atleast the principle of that show seems to be more aligned to Star Trek of the past. Until then, back to DS9.

I’m not one of those “everything was better in the old days” wankers, it was always spotty and occasionally dreadful… But the best of peak Trek (like with Dr Who or the Twilight Zone) felt like smart conceptual Sci Fi writers learning how to write basic TV scripts. Whereas this (and what I’ve seen of Discovery) seems like hacky TV writers learning how to write basic Sci Fi concepts.

Have you seen Orville? It's old Trek with some jokes added for no reason. It's much much better than Discovery and (RLM reviews of) Picard. But. Watching it made me more negative about any possible future of good Trek. Copying from my own review:

In fact despite being better than Discovery this made me less optimistic about the chance of any real Trek reboot- what if it's all been done, what if there are no new ideas for that universe?

The problem with that is that all the character building was done off screen. They come back after a year and they are all bosom buddies. Raffi and Elnor seemingly having a much closer bond that even Picard and Elnor. I think back to DS9 and watching over the course of years a friendship coming from Miles and Julian. And Miles hated him at first. This is just like "Right everyone, these two really like each other now. Everyone got that? Good." Its like the end of season one were she and seven are now a thing. Like where did that even come from? There was no build up to it. It was just someone saying "Right everyone, these two really like each other now. Everyone got that? Good.". Its terrible writing. I mean, how hard is it show little bits of a relationship being formed over 10 episodes?

As for Q. What happened to the loveable rascal? The guy who may have been a huge threat, but was always having fun with it. Where did he go? This Q seems to be at the end of yet another tragic story thats about to unfold over the next 5 episodes. And its going to be something mind numbingly stupid. Hopefully not as bad as some kid screaming in a special place that effected the whole galaxy, but you never know.

Ive been rewatching TNG episodes and its shocking just how alien all this new stuff is to that. Its like the people writing today have never seen and dont even like star trek. Ive that the game thats coming out though, does "feel" like 90s trek. So Ive got my fingers crossed for that. Cos all this misery porn, forced drama and nostalgia bait is grating.

The latest SNW trailer looks awful, as you'd expect after Discovery and Picard. The worlds dullest character/actor as captain also wont help.

Pike was the only good thing to come out of Discovery S2. I'll give it a go.

I don't have particularly high expectations after watching the trailer. It seems to be attempting Orville style humor and apparently has the same writing style and cartoonish CGI.

The trouble is, TV has evolved so much since then, and become a bigger medium than Movies in a sense. You wouldn't get away with a full 24 episode series of non linear storytelling these days, everything has to build up to a massive cliffhanger at the end of the series. It follows the same story over 10-13 episodes and everything is geared towards that story.

Season 3 Spoiler

The entire Next Generation Cast / Crew are in Season 3

Theres still plenty of Episodic tv out there, chief. But that’s not the issue. It’s how the stories are told, how the characters grow. New trek is overly focused on identity politics and being accessible. So instead of the large ensemble crew that acts professionally and gets time to shine so we can get to know them, we have forced drama, an unprofessional crew always with the jokes and off screen romances that just appear out of nowhere. Over the course of 4 years, Burnham has been the sole focus of Discovery. Something that most people have complained about since day one. So now in season 4 she’s grown relationships with the other members of the crew to make it seem like this has all been a team effort this whole time. The problem is that it’s off screen. She’s picked up rapport with nameless characters out of nowhere. On Picard you have raffi and seven getting together because someone saw them standing next to each other in a photo and said “yeah, those two look good together. Let’s make them a couple. And don’t bother with any of that pesky explanation stuff.”.

Tv has evolved since the 90s, you’re right. And people are, or should be, paying more attention to how stories and characters are grown. take Jamie on game of thrones. He starts off hated, then by the end of it he’s a character people are rooting for. And when they pissed his arc away in the end, people were outraged. This is story telling and character building. Imagine him shagging gigantor in that last season without any of the build up to it. They just get together for no reason. Who is going to care? No one, right? People didn’t love Ross and Rachel because they got together. They loved them because of the journey towards getting together. Raffi and seven are just there, holding hands and being a gay couple is supposed to do the heavy lifting for this. Which is just insulting to the audience. If they wanted Raffi and seven together, they should have done it right, and had their relationship evolve over the season, or at least over an episode. Give the audience a chance to get invested in them, and root for them to get together.

I tell ya, the writing is just so lazy with new trek. It’s over 30 years since the tng breathed new life into Star Trek on tv. And I bet if you ask any fan of those shows what their favourite episodes are, they will all have a long list. And be able to tell you about it and why it’s their favourite. New trek is, for a lack of better term, chewing gum for the eyes. It’s pretty to look at it, but even that loses its appeal after a few blinks. No one is going to talking about new trek in 30 years. Other than maybe to talk about how stupid it all was. And much potential it wasted.

Gave up halfway through ep3. Let's see how they cock up the next series.

I've been avoiding this due to the overwhelming disappointment I felt watching the first series, which like Discovery just didn't feel like Star Trek to me. If I could sum it up with one word it would be "lazy". It was lazily written, lazy CGI (Riker arriving on the USS CopyPaste for example), lazy acting, etc.

Is this season any better? Or should I just wait for the next season of Orville? I'm torn as I adore TNG but I don't want to tarnish that memory any further with another season that urinates over everything I loved about it.

Season 2 started well, and has then turned into something that is barely Star Trek.

With season 2 already half way over, I've decided to write it off as a covid disaster and am looking forward to season 3. Although the last episode was half way decent, albeit admittedly not Star Trek. Its almost as if they hired a shit version of Christopher Nolan to write the past few episodes.

They almost certainly haven't, I just watched the episode where Picard goes to meet Guinan in 2024 (who doesn't look like Goldberg). The bar's address is No.10 Forward street (obviously an attempt at the origin of 10Forward on TNG) which is some coincidence as the bar she ran on the enterprise was on deck 10 in the forward section of the ship. She also didn't recognise or even seem to know of Picard despite meeting him in the 19th century (where she looked like Whoopie Goldberg) in one of the old episodes.

Without cgi I’m not sure how you get around the not looking like Whoppie Goldberg thing.

Seems like people hate it, yet I’m really enjoying it. It’s not traditional Star Trek but that doesn’t bother me. Most of the Star Trek shows are pretty crap anyway. This is just a good sci-fi thriller TV show. I actually prefer that it’s a departure from the norm.

Well fair enough that is a minor gripe in this clusterfeck of a show but they could have easily used De-aging CGI if they wanted to. feck knows they're saving a shit load of money on from the CGI budget by setting an entire season of Star Trek in 2024.

Or feck it just have Whoopi Goldberg play the younger Guinan too, she doesn't look that much different than she did in Star Trek.

Been wanting to try this, not a Star Trek fan or anything but hoping it is enjoyable as a Sci Fi show.
If so then try the Expanse, Raised by Wolves, Project Blue Book, Foundation or even Halo.

ST Picard have Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, Whoppi Goldberg and many more... and somehow they still managed to F this up. It's actually somekind of achievement, if you'll think about it.
