Television Squid Game (Netflix)

Do you all actively try to figure stuff out and spoiler shows for yourselves?

I didn't figure out the brother or the old man as I don't try to. It lessens my enjoyment.
Sometimes it comes naturally, sometimes I try and figure things out on purpose. For me that's part of the entertainment, seeing if you're right.

It was entertaining even if the quality fell after the brilliant episode 6.

I felt though that it could have delivered much more. It touched on various themes (inequality, the consumer debt driven society, the marginalisation of the elderly) without developing them or drawing us deeper into the characters.
Season 2 definitely needs a couple more writers added to the team to share the load and maybe add some interesting ideas.

Bit of a moral panic going on about this right now. People up in arms about primary school age kids watching it. Now I agree that’s a bad thing. The funny twist is that a lot of the outrage is about “children recreating Squid Game games in school playgrounds”. Well, duh!

Dumbass parents if they're letting their young kids watch this

Yeah. How dare they let their kids in on this secret called 'Netflix'.
That's like saying you can get to babestation with a sky remote.

If your kids are watching whatever they want no matter the age restriction that's a parenting issue. And I'm talking very young kids here, primary school age.

Kids have their own phones before they learn to talk. Youre not keeping them from accessing something as mainstream as Netflix.

I remember porn mags in the forest. Kids will always find a way to get access to stuff they shouldn't.

I do think the stuff kids these days have easy access to can be a lot worse, though :p Squid Game being pretty damn mild, obviously.

I loved this show. It's brilliant. Though next season I am definitely watching it with Korean dialogue. My nit pick is this. Why does every one of these hunger game's type show always have to turn around and fight the big corporation. I'd love for a show to do this and have new sets of games, characters and story each season. Instead of doing fighting back. Like 3% on Netflix did the same thing. The show got worse because the game's were the fun part and it became less about them.

It’s okay for kids to play marbles as long as the loser doesn’t die.

Didn't mind the dubbing. I am simple like that. Prefer dubbing to subtitles.

Enjoyed it. I think the job they did with the character development gave it more substance/depth (Ali and the girl).

I thought the old man died. Didn't see that coming at all.

That's just bad parenting if true.

Heard a few people say it was obvious the old man was behind it all. I didnt see that at all. What were the hints?

He was number 1, knew a lot about how to play the games, was never harmed, etc...

Short of locking them in a room without a phone let us know how you achieved that.
It's not about what they can access. It's about teaching them what is and isn't appropriate for their age. That gets harder as kids move into secondary school and face stronger peer pressure, but at primary age it absolutely is something you can control as a parent.

Just finished Alice in Borderland. Think I liked it more, but both very good. Death games but fair bit of difference.
Didn’t really get into Alice in Borderland, I think what makes SG intriguing from the beginning is the lack of mystery in how they get there it’s not sci-fi but there is the mystery of whose running the games, who calls the front man, the whole organisation.

Also SG is quite realistic by that I mean when you think about the 100000s of people every year all over the world who get enticed into leaving their homes/lives and completely trust sinister powers all in the hope of a better life but end up falling victims to sex or forced labour traffickers, or even just migrant traffickers who have no problems killing their customers etc.

You realise that there are millions of people on earth who would watch SG and be able to relate to the characters and see similarities with the games organisers, how they get people to join and the very criminals that they fell victims to.

I enjoyed watching it, though did feel it struggled in places. It seemed when the focus was during the games and on those characters survival and how they cope mentally in the place it was really good. However once it went outside the games itself (ie the last episode and the start) it wasn't that great.

Even the VIPs watching were done poorly, as they looked stiff/bored and unenthused most of the time. Could have really done with much less screen time for them, or just left them as sinister shadows that you only catch glimpses off and it would have been better.

I did manage to guess the brother part before the reveal, but the other twist I didn't pick up on.

My wife (a teacher) told me the same a few weeks back. Apparently kids are playing Red light Green light and the loser gets beat up. Of course it was somehow my fault for watching "that stupid show"

Well they would lose their shit if they saw kids playing “British Bulldogs” 30 years ago (only just occurred to me how weird it was for Irish kids to play a game with that name!)

Got the last one to watch tonight - have preferred it I think I prefer the characters and writing.

I could see what was coming before they announced it, but ep6 was really great for me. I agree that it dropped off a bit after that, but was still good.

I always like the books/media which are like "And then there were none" by Agatha Christie. Anyone with other shows books similar to that?

Excellent show that stays with you. Starts strong and just gets better and better until the amazing ep6. Then some total cringe moments i ep7 that seem totally out of place in an otherwise superb production, which breaks the immersion a bit. Finished with two strong episodes.

The 4th VIP sounds like he wasn’t acting at all:

“I’ve written more books about the Beatles than anyone on this planet!” bellows Geoffrey Giuliano over Zoom from his home in Bangkok. You’ll know him as VIP four, the only member of the group to remove his mask (along with the rest of his clothes) in the series.

He was responsible for 32 Beatles books, including one that caused Olivia Harrison to write a letter to the Guardian stating: “The sight of Geoffrey Giuliano’s face is enough to make anyone a recluse.”

As for the negative feedback about his role in Squid Game, Giuliano isn’t interested. “I ain’t complaining, baby!” he roars, gesticulating so wildly he sends his webcam flying. “I’m in the hottest show in the world. I got fanmail. Just today I got a woman who said: ‘Send me your autograph.’ So I did, and two hours later she sent me a photo where she had ‘Geoffrey Giuliano, VIP four,’ tattooed right across her forearm.” He pauses. “There have also been some sexual invitations, from males and females.”

“This project has elevated me from absolute, total obscurity,” adds Giuliano. “I get tattoos of my signature. I get invitations for fellatio. I’m a star!”

I used to get invitations for fellatio, but then @Eyepopper stopped messaging.

Looking at the next season squid game. It would be cool to add games like the floor is made of lava. Hide and seek would be tense as hell.
