Spurs 2018/19

Maybe this is what Levy envision when he agreed to move the transfer deadline to 9th August. He knows back then he have no money to spend if the market stay open untill 31th, he maybe and will likely lose players on the same time. Close the market soon and he can come up with thousand reasons after. He still deity for some though. Not a bad deal.

Feck knows. Not wanting to sell to a rival club I guess, whereas at a cut price other teams might be interested. I guess he's still going to be a squad player and used when needed, and we couldn't sign a replacement in time.

That I can sort of understand. I still remember vividly having to sell Sterling and Torres to City and Chelsea. But it just seems like idiotic not to sell him earlier to a Spanish/German/Italian club if you're not going to play him anyway. And yes, I do realize Alderweireld has a say in it as well. But surely he'd prefer to play regularly elsewhere..

Have they? As I've said, Liverpool aside I'm not sure that any of our rivals will be better this season than last. But you of course know better … because signing new players, regardless of all other considerations, is bound to make them better - right?

I mean .. most likely, yes? Most teams who sign new players end up doing better. City and United were already better than us, Liverpool have massively strengthened, and Chelsea (who were in crisis last season) have a manager who the squad will actually be behind and have added two midfielders who would walk in to our side.

Just hoping they'll flop isn't a great strategy, mate.

Not surprised that they kept Alderweireld. Selling one of the best CB's in the league to a direct rival would be ridiculous considering they aren't signing anyone.

Yeah, selling Toby to United and then signing nobody would have been ridiculous. I'd have preferred we sold him early and then brought in a replacement though, as he's just going to be a bad smell around the club with everybody knowing he doesn't really want to be here.

having watched both players for there clubs last season Chelsea ain't downgraded. infact a lot of people in Spain wanted Kepa to be the number 1 for the WC.

What people aren't taking into account either is his ability with his feet.

Ederson didn't just improve City from a shot stopping perspective but his ability with his feet has helped them achieve there style and benefits them in keeping possession and catching teams out that do want to press.

Courtouis was a fantastic GK, but shocking with his passing

And will Kepa be as good when it comes to using his hands? It's all very well and good saying what Kepa might do better than Courtois but what you're overlooking is how good Courtois is at taking the pressure off of a defence by his ability to dominate in the air.

Young Spanish keeper coming into the PL for the first time has all the makings of De Gea's early years mrk II

Yeah, tbf I don't know much about him but I said in his thread I expect him to struggle at first, all down to whether the manager handles it well. I'll bow to others superior knowledge on his talent though, seems to be very highly rated and if those reports are true he'll come good no matter where he plays.

We're not … not when there are at least 9 clubs around who currently can offer higher wages.
Think that's bollocks. Spurs hold their contracts. It's their decision to sell. Fact is a club that has hopes of challenging for the title should not see a window where it hasn't signed anyone as a good window. When it's not like they won the title in the first place.

Of course the club are going to try and get our top players on new contracts .. it shouldn't be a cause for celebration. Levy is a money man and he's not going to want to lose our top assets for peanuts in the future.

It's refreshing to have a Spurs fan on here pointing out how much shite he writes. When Utd fans do it he calls us jealous of your new stadium and goes on about net spend, average league finishes since Fergie retired etc.

I have to say, I find it staggering you've bought nobody. One serious injury to one of your starting 11 and you're in huge trouble.

Total rubbish: we went many games last season with several of our best XI not available for one reason or another.

Alderweireld, Vertonghen, and Dembele all have their contracts up next summer. I think the club has an option to extend Alderweireld by a year but that this option triggers a 25m release clause, so it guarantees that they get that amount for him if he is kept until then. My understanding is that the others they would lose on frees if not signed to new deals. That's going to be tricky as surely these players have seen how much money can be made by running down your contract and they're likely only to accept new deals from Spurs that are three or more years and for big wages, which I don't see Levy paying.

Levy has done really well to sign most of the attacking players to new deals but if they lose Alderweireld, Vertonghen, and Dembele at once and only get 25M total that is going to rip out the spine of the team without leaving many resources for replacements.

SPurs could sell Kane and Eriksen and buy Bradley Wright Phillips and Darren Gibson to replace them and you'd be on here proclaiming it a great bit of business and all was well at Tottenham.

He's a better shot stopper according to xG - Courtois has always graded out mediocre for his entire career:

What isn't up for debate is that Courtois is much better on crosses & at commanding his penalty area (arguably the best in the world at this), so this is an area of concern.

Chelsea were in crisis last season because they were falling like a stone down the league table … and not the other way around. But suddenly, with a worse GK, EL football to contend with and a manager with no Prem experience, they're' suddenly going to rocket back into the top 4 because of Kovacic and Jorghino? I doubt it. And nor would both of those players "walk into" a Spurs best XI.

United finishing above us last season doesn't mean that they'll do so this season … anymore than Spurs finishing above them the season before that mean that we'd do so again last season. We all start with zero points.

Besides, if you think your complaints about the transfer window are unique to Spurs, then you should check out the many posts from United fans on this forum about their transfer window. But no, according to you, Spurs have had a disaster and all is rosy elsewhere … lol.

So the "bedwetters" turned out to be right, whilst the Levy FC fans..

Very surprised Spurs didn't move for Zaha, especially considering they won't have Son for the first four games.

They've actually setup a Premier League record of not making a single signing in a summer transfer window since it's inception.

To think some of them were deluded enough to think there was a £150m transfer kitty to spend this summer

Will fred be good at using his feet? Of course these are questions we don't know until the season starts quite clearly.

Its not like we have a history of new managers coming in and doing well straight away, especially not Italian ones.

Jorghino would be your best CM if he joined also. (providing he continues the level he has been playing at)

Replacing the goalkeeper with another good one isn't going to make them much worse. Sarri will properly not bother too much with EL football, just like he did with Napoli, and Kovacic, Jorginho and Kante is an incredible midfield which is far more likely to change things than them switching a keeper. Conte and Guardiola, the last two premier league winning managers, 'had no prem experience'. And yes, they would both walk in to our midfield, Jorginho was one of the best midfielders in Serie A last season for a team which pushed Juventus for the title, and Kovacic is a class act. We currently field Dier in there, an injury prone/declining Dembele, Wanyama and a returning from injury Winks.

They finished above us last season because they added Matic and Lukaku. Those two players put them above us, they improved them and (shock horror) that made a difference as they collected more points. This season we've signed nobody and they brought in Fred and Dalot, so even if those two do nothing they're still a better side. Of course there's a chance we could be better, but it's based on nothing but hope because we haven't changed at all. United fans are annoyed at their window despite having a much deeper squad and also signing two players .. we are unique in doing nothing.

We're more a massive disappointment than a disaster. Had an opportunity to improve on things and freshen up the squad ready for the new stadium and didn't take it. Sure we 'might' improve and magically things 'might' get better, but we're relying now on good luck and hope, rather than actually trying to address our issues. That's a terrible strategy.

I'm proclaiming that Spurs - contrary to many predictions - have not lost a single good player to a Prem rival and have tied down several to new contracts.

And yes, I'm proclaiming that all is pretty well at Spurs … and that those who believe the same squad as we had last season is suddenly going to bomb - for mysterious reasons to do with United signing Fred or Chelsea having a new manager (for instance) - may well have another think coming.

Another thing to consider is, what does this lack of transfers communicate to your best players? The ones who for the past 3 seasons have gotten all so close to winning trophies but lacked one thing or another. Surely a lack of ambition like this has to make them question the 'project.'

This is currently the only thread on redcafe that makes me feel slightly better about our cataclysmic feck up this window..........

Kovacic is over-rated … which is one reason why RM let him go out on loan. Moreover, you cite 3 players for a Chelsea midfield - Kante, Jorghino and Kovacic - when Spurs only play with 2.

This means you're able to conveniently take Eriksen out of the equation, when if we played a 3-man midfield he'd be in it. So if Kante is Dier's equivalent and is a given for Chelsea (which he is), and Kovacic and Jorghino would both "walk into" Spurs midfield (according to you), this means that Eriksen would have to be replaced by one of them. Clearly that wouldn't happen. And so clearly your claim is nonsense.

As for United in comparison, it's more simplistic pessimism from you. You're happy to cite Lukaku and Matic as the reason they finished above last season, but ignore many other factors concerning this season, not least that Matic is past his best and likely to decline, or that their two wingbacks - Young and Valencia - are now aged 33 and also likely to further decline, or the unhappy state of their camp and the increasingly destructive behaviour of their manager.

This window does not prove otherwise. It could well be that we chose not to spend money on players given the crazy prices quoted, especially given that we're not in dire need of signing someone just for the sake of it.

Moreover, we have spent money on several new and improved contracts.

To think some of them were deluded enough to think there was a £150m transfer kitty to spend this summer

That was the word going around, then the stadium name sponsor deal with with HSBC failed to materialize. I do wonder whether that had an impact on transfers.

TC has played in systems that protect him far more and play to his strengths. That being said its the same thing with sweeper keepers. Karius prevented a fair few shots for us in the second half of the season and he wouldn't be credited with that because he's cut it out at source so there's no real shot on target or he's closed to opposition so quick and reduced the shot quality which would show up on shot maps. It was an important trait because we notoriously give up very few chances but the ones we do are massive on Xp G charts and usually big chances.

Likewise TC probably prevents a fair few chances by being so authoritative in the box.

He might just end up signing a new deal. Not like it hasn't happened before.
It'd be a bit surprising if he did, if he actually wanted to leave he'd have his pick of clubs next year when the clause kicks in for him.
