Sports Personality of The Year 2014

No surprise seeing Hamilton win and McIlroy come runner up.

Pathetic choice. There were only two drivers capable of winning the F1 title this year. Should have been Rory all the way. Maybe Hamilton won it due to his victory being more recent.

Yeah, as excellent as Hamilton was, put him in an average car where he didn't win the title and he'd have been nowhere near this.

Well F1 is about being in the best team, therefore contributing to the best car, beating your teammate and delivering the title. When did that suddenly change? If people go by that logic then all F1 drivers that ever won it shouldn't have won it.

McIlroy is so obviously going to win it one day, he's a superstar.

Probably should have been McIlroy, but Hamilton has won two championships now so fair enough.

Nobody is disputing that Lewis is a deserving champion. The best way of phrasing it was @Barney's, Rory just deserved it more.

That's like the argument Liverpool would've battered us with Suarez today.

It's not at all. Just that had Hamilton not been in a car that was miles better than every other single one in the grid, he may have struggled to win the title and wouldn't have been so dominant, unlike McIlroy who wasn't given a massive advantage over everyone else in his sport.

Not that he doesn't deserve to be up there - just that McIlroy was probably more deserving this time.

Lewis actually looked a bit emotional there, so I guess perhaps sportsfolk do actually care about spoty. Really is a footnote on there cv rather than anything significant really though.

Lewis earned his place on the team through years of go karts etc...he did take a gamble joining that team at the time too.

That's true, admittedly.
Must admit I don't really care who won. I wonder if Rory's callous ditching of Wozniacki cost him votes. My wife thinks he is a twat because of it.

Possibly. He's started to come across as a bit of a dick in recent times, despite how good a player he is.

I'm surprised by the result. Reading twitter or reading the F1 thread on this forum or even speaking to people at work, the opinion on him is very split. I never thought Lewis was all that popular to win.

Hamilton really shouldn't have won this in my opinion. Yes, he's the current F1 World Champion, but F1 is a sport where there's only ever really 2/3 other racers who can be serious competition (this year there was only really Rosberg who he was competing with) and outside of his obvious talent, he's a terrible loser, extremely naive and very arrogant. You can also hardly call him British, seeing as he ran to the nearest tax-haven as soon as he started earning anything approaching big bucks.

Mccilroy deserved this.

tbf, he another in a long line of winners with little or no personality, so he fits the bill perfectly.

So we can't call Hamilton British because he lives in Monaco, but we can call the guy who's going to play for Ireland in the Olympics British.

Speaking of terrible losers, McIlroy needs to work on his 'finishing runner-up' face.

I agree it's strange wording.

Exactly. He shipped off to a tax haven as soon as he was earning mega bucks, so for me he shouldn't be on the short list for the award. He should be paying tax if he wants to be eligible.

I also dislike McIlroy quite a lot, but he should have won. His achievements this year far outweigh Hamiltons.

Stop embarrassing yourself with your lack of knowledge regarding the golfing set up in Ireland.

I'm no Hamilton fan, but suggesting he shouldn't be seen as British is just stupid.

He's gone out of his way to avoid paying tax. I think that revokes any call to him being British if I'm honest.

But the tax thing is just a minor argument I have against him. He's competed with one person all season, while showing off his total lack of class all the while, and this qualifies him to be the best British sportsperson of the year? Ridiculous.

What? I have no interest in the golfing set up in Ireland, but I know McIlroy's situation. My point was that if there are people who apparently don't consider Hamilton British because he lives in Monaco there are going to be people who (wrongly) don't consider McIlroy British because he's chosen to represent Ireland.

People quickly forget McIlroy lives in the states now.

Meh, Irish actors are always up for British awards if they're good enough. It's what the English media do. Not going to change any time soon.

He chose to represent the Republic of Ireland as he played all of his amateur golf under the Dublin-based Golfing Union of Ireland, it’s the only Union he realistically could have represented. He decided to stay with them as he felt it was the right thing to do, and it was. He is a British golfer who decided to stay loyal to a Union that helped him become a professional golfer.

Sure a lot of people on here know that but I doubt the average punter who actually votes is that clued on. I know quite a few people who wrongly think McIlroy is Irish and so I think Giggsy92 is right and it probably did count against him.

You also can't use where the person is based as an argument here either since both of them are based abroad.

Most likely.
I agree that it shouldnt matter where a person lives, stupid to suggest otherwise.
