Sports Personality of the Year 2012

This year has been of a tad higher standard then the year Zara phillips won.

Should be Wiggins, but the "personality" part might tempt to viewers vote for Sebastian Coe, who has arguably been the most influential and successful sports personality this year, although no longer as a competitor.

Not Ennis. She's won one gold, like many others, don't see why she's getting such recognition.

Farah or Wiggins.

The heptathlon it's a tough gold to win. The heptathlon and decathlon winners willl always be within a chance to win SPOTY. I don't think Ennis will win but I can see why she's getting a lot of recognition and I think she deserves it.

Unless Murray can win the US open, it's between Farah or Wiggins

I think Mo will win it ahead of Wiggo, Ennis possibly should but she'll be forgotten in the rush.

EDIT; 8/13 Wiggo, 5/2 Mo, 8 Ennis. Worth a few bob on Mo I'd say.

If Murray wins the US Open surely he's gotta be up there in contention. Wimbledon finalist, Olympic Gold and US Open winner?

its incredible Team GB has done so well. heck to be just third overall.

And the whole Games have been done so very well. Probably among the best I have seen...

To be third is a great thing in itself but when you consider the total of medals and specially gold medals it makes an even more incredible achievement

I would agree, not only have the public taken to him more since the Wimbledon Final and this was only enhanced during the Olympics, we have to take into account the fact that then his success will be the most recent in the public consciousness.

Then there is the effect of campaigns which have become an increasing factor with the SPOTY.

There's also the Ryder Cup and the last major of the year, success for McIlroy would push him into contention with a concerted campaign behind him.

I wonder with so many contenders from Team GB if it might be similar to when United won the Treble, votes for the Footballer of the Year being so divided that somebody else less likely took it.

Months away yet though.

Wiggins or Ennis for me.

If it actually came down to having a personality and a bit of charisma, Giggs would never have beaten Jenson Button.

Were his extracurricular activities and involvement with the courts known at that time i doubt he would have had enough support.

Big leap that: he won't win the US open.

For me it should be Wiggins considering in 2012: he picked up his 7th Olympic medal and his forth gold, he became the first British rider ever to win the Tour De France and he became the first cyclist in history to win the Tour and an Olympic gold in the same year.

The thing is Wiggins could win more things next year, and we can give it to him then. There will never be a "better" time to give it to Mo Farah... Even though Mo Farah is 3 years younger than Bradley.

Hmm.

Road cycling bores the pants off of me.

As an aside neither where born in Britain. Not that it matters, it should add to the pride. Land of Opportunity :D

Impossible choice

it's between Wiggins, Ennis, Farah, Hoy for me

Id say Mo a millimetre ahead of Bradley

Its 'Sports Personality': two words of equal importance. the winner should represent sporting excellence bar none but also be personable and a role model.

All of the above have these qualities in spades but given his new 'pin up status' and for providing the chance for the the whole nation to sing with pride, the national anthem without irony or scary nationalism, on a super emotional night right at the end of the games, it has to go to Mo Farah.

He has captured the mood of the nation and in so many ways represents modern day Britain at its very best.

Pretty cool anyway as it kinda makes Chavski and Shittys successes this year seem redundant and worthless. Ha!

I actually wasn't sure who I wanted to win, but this single post has put me behind Mo :D

Britain being push bike kings is hardly a turn up for the books. There are something like 50 British Olympic gold medals for cycling floating about in this country. How many long distance track Olympic medals, let alone golds, does Britain have?

Wiggins had a whole team of cyclists, engineers and Rupert Murdoch's money behind his success. It just doesn't have the magic of 1 man pounding the track, propelled by nothing but his own steam.

I'm biased though. I've grown up watching in awe, the great 5 and 10 thousand metre runners and believing I would never see a brit win the events. Whereas I could never get my head around what seemed to be 1 long, boring, absurdly dressed, failed drugs test.

I think the British public can understand the rarity factor in a Brit winning the Tour de France but perhaps not what it took to achieve victory. And the way Wiggins risked incident and put it out there to help Cavendish across the line in triumph in Paris has got be remembered. A week and a half later he is dominating the time trial.

Wiggins deserves to be celebrated for his career; Farah has the next Olympics to truly write himself into history. It is pertinent to remember that Farah became the 5th man in history to win the 10&5k double; the 'double double' has also been done before. Wiggins is the first man ever to win the tour and Olympic gold in the same year; he has been elite for 10 years now. For me - it is now time to honour his career.

Wiggins
Ennis
Farrah

They all deserve it far more than Murray. Not to mention they have better personalities.

On pure achievement, I'd say

Wiggins
Murray
Farah
Ennis

'Personality' doesn't normally seem to factor that much despite the title. In fact it's like they wanted to call it BBC Sports Person of the Year but thought that sounded silly.

Its the Wimbledon title everyone wants not the US open, slam or no slam. Andy was awesome tonight, did us proved but the Olympics had everyone tuned in and gripped. Mo was mental, real exciting stuff. People won't forget that come voting time, Ennis, Wigs and co as well.

Murray's achievements are better than Ennis'. She won a gold. Murray got to the final of Wimbledon, won a gold and a silver and has now broke his, and the UK's, duck at men's grandslam tournaments.

Between Wiggins, Farah and Murray for me.

Why?

Murray got to three Grand Slam finals, winning the most recent which was also an all-time epic. He also win Gold and Silver at the Olympics. His achievements are unparalleled in British tennis.

Yeah and Nigel Mansell, David Beckham and Steve Redgrave are all fine examples of that.
Wonder if it could count against Wiggins that Cavendish won it last year and it might be seen as cyclist overload. Hope not, reckon he deserves it.

Out of those three I'd say Beckham is the only one to have won it because of his personality or image rather than his achievements.

it's too close a call for one person to win so sharing it amongst all the Team GB athletes wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Wonder if the BBC will change it to 20 sports people or do what Denise Lewis said on the Olympic coverage have an award for men and one for women. I know the BBC changed the voting system from last year, when no women had been nominated. So close but I still think Wiggins wins it.
