The search is already under way for a replacement, with United fans likely to view the non-replacement of another totemic player as incontrovertible proof that the Glazers do not have the money to invest. United have already begun making discreet inquiries about Liverpool's Fernando Torres, who is hugely disillusioned at Anfield and now ready to leave, possibly as early as January – when it would also make most financial sense for Rooney to be sold.

Can't be that discreet then

And who the feck was responsible for that little nugget of shite?

Won't happen.

I think after yesterday anythings a possibility to be frank. I'm certain we'll have been looking now for a few months inspite of what we've said. For me it's a little like open season at the minute. Liverpool are in trouble.

For his faults Torres has shown himself to he pretty loyal to be fair.

Plus why would we want him when he can't stay fit for more than five minutes?

You'd think that but he's played no better then Wayne and as for the fitness, it's true and that would probably push down the price - but we've seen with saha and other players, sometimes you go somewhere else and it's a fresh start.

These days we look at things different and lou touched on it yesterday, you used to have to earn your contracts. At a time when Waynes got these problems and isn't scoring we looked to offer him a great contract and a long contract. Wayne gets injuries too but it don't take away from the fact on his day, he's a very good (if stupid) player

That said it's all speculation anyway

 Torres rumours

your laughing mate but people would have been laughing about the rooney rumors wouldn't they - before we all heard it was true? Not sure what reason any of us have of being 100% confident about anything...

Torres seems to have more class than Rooney when it comes to this, he respected the history and tradition at Atletico and said he will never sign for Real.

Plus, Liverpool are no longer in a position where they need to sell, so it would take an offer of Ronaldo proportions to make them even consider a bid for us. Money which we dont have.

Seems: We'd have said that about Wayne...Wayne respected the club and the history.....he would never sign for liverpool and remember he was an Everton fan not a United fan

Liverpool are in a dire position. You don't get into Europe at the bottom of the league. We have money. It's not different to Alan smith who left leeds united to come to Manchester United a club he said he would NEVER play for...

You forgot James, King and Welbeck.

Part of me thinks that we should simply say feck it, keep the Rooney cash and show faith in our youngsters and start playing them regually.

Rooney to City then Torres to United? the war that would create would leave Everton as the last team standing. :p

I agree but at the same time I think the club would want to make a statement. We said we'd spend big when scholes etc retired - but I think that's changed now somewhat. We do have tremendous talent here and that softens the blow. I feel sorry for the people who don't understand we DO have talent at the club.

I see mentions of "loyalty" and "class" in this thread!

When will people realise?

You don't seriously believe that it's remotely similar to Alan Smith situation, do you? He left a sinking ship, a side that was relegated to a lower division and had no money at all. Torres would be leaving a mid-table side that is likely to get new owners sometime soon, and the money, for a club that's not only their arch rivals but also isn't that far ahead in terms of squad quality (without Rooney we're basically left with no world class offensive players).

Indeed.

I'd be writing this season off personally. Just too much is going on to even consider mounting a realistic title challenge, i'd be targeting the Carling Cup and FA Cup and getting far in the CL.

But i'd blood our youngsters in right now. Recall Cleverly asap and get him in the squad. Let Chico and Macheda get plenty of playing time. Bed in Fabio and Smalling some more.

Then in the summer we look at making some hard choices and selling some of our squad players to allow space for some of our more promising youngsters in the squad. Then when our next manager arrivies (it'll be Mourinho), he'll have a very young team with a massive warchest ready to allow him to stamp his mark on the team replacing our aging players like Carrick/Brown/O'Shea/Berbatov who will be in their mid 30's. Very similiar to how Ferguson started at United.

Liverpool are not going to sell us Torres. They could get more money from someone else, so why the hell would they sell to us?

If we got Johnson and Hart AND cash, I'd prefer for Rooney to go to City than to stay with us, seriously. It'd sort out the left side and the keeper position with English players who are DEFINITE future stars.

I mean, just fecking imagine this...

--------------------------Hart--------------------
Rafael------------Rio-----------Evans--------Evra
-------Fletcher---------------------Carrick-------
Nani-------------------Scholes-------------Johnson
-----------------------Berbatov--------------------

It will never happen. City will not gives us 2 of their most promising youngsters plus cash for Rooney.

Once we hit January, Rooney's value drops another few million. We won't get anywhere near £50/£60m for him. I think all the top clubs know this and will be bidding ridiculously low amounts for him.

Yeah, I agree in all honesty. I think our best bet is for him to feck off to Madrid in a player plus cash deal.

Are you sure about that? If Real/Barca and Chelsea are sniffing about then we'll be in a position of strength.

City are probably that stupid to actually accept it. Johnson and Hart would be a steal frankly. Although doesn't Johnson play on the right?

In anycase, Rooney won't go cheap. Just look at the Ozil deal as evidence for that.

I disagree. I think City would be desperate to get Rooney as a marquee signing. It would be an indication to the world of their arrival among the big boys, as well as to boost the confidence of future transfer targets. Money is certainly not a problem for them, and i would imagine them to put in a ridiculously high bid, in order to ward off the interest of Real Madrid. It's really up to Gill to facilitate an auction war between City and Madrid. Also, if we were to insist on Hart and Johnson, i am sure we will get either one or both.
