Solskjaer's legacy and his future

The fella who wrote this for the Telegraph knew the brief: troll for engagements. His employer is after them clicks.

It hurts me so much that Ole leaves Old Trafford without lifting a trophy as coach. Can't put it into words.

It’s ridiculous to refer to a manager who finished 3rd and 2nd in his two full seasons as a ‘lost little boy’ in any case, but this os just over the line. Really angered me.

Did their jobs then. It's all about the clicks isn't it.

I can see it now..people who were relentlessly defending Ole and mocking anyone who dares to criticize him, will be ready to give Ole the full credit if the next manager succeeds because "Ole built the foundation" just like nonsense LVG fans used to say after he left.
He built a great foundation. Our two strikers have a combined age of 70. Our cm is shambolic. We have 4 players out of contract probably leaving in the summer. No youth bought through with the exception of Greenwood.

Your making no sense and not in charge of the thread, not sure what you’ve been watching in all honesty. Your about three years out of date.
Do you honestly think the "Thank you Ole" thread is the right one for your petty squabbles?

You’re as in you are……….what do they teach you at play school these days?

Already been done mate and probably should have put a full stop at end of your sentence if you want to seem intelligent.

Not sure where you're coming from. There was two and a half seasons of football to use to assess Ole’s football. If the Board were convinced by him despite that evidence that he could put it right, well, they were proven wrong spectacularly.

Quite naive.

Clever, first thing you’ve posted that makes sense. At least your nonsense has made me laugh with how out of touch it is.

Meow! It figures that someone trolling the Thank you Ole thread would be so catty.

I don't get why when things are posted on social media people don't post the actual social media posts but instead quote @utdreport quoting the post. Same with transfer stories. A journalist will Tweet something yet the utdreport Tweet of the Tweet will get posted

I swear when some of the Caf passes on their headstone will read:

'@utdreport: Family: Missed by all'

Disagreeing with you isn’t trolling mate, and bit late to try and take the moral high ground after being catty yourself. Not a fan of people that want to give it out but can’t take it.

His see you soon remark, tells me he will be back in some capacity. His ability to ensure the right attitude is at the club tells me he will be back soon.

Maybe as some form of Co DOF or somethiny lets see. Personally I would welcome it.

Thanks Ole.

Imo this says a lot about Ole. He's probably a bad coach but surely a nice person, maybe too nice. I have no memory of our players saying such things about Moyes, LVG or Jose after those left. Instead, some digs if my memory serves me right. But my memory is bad so please correct me if I'm wrong.

For anyone who can't understand what I quoted please refer to post #420. Newbie can't quote media.

Thanks for signing some quality players, if he even had a say in that.

other than that, he was the biggest con artist that fooled a lot of our fans. Only those that understood football like myself noticed that much earlier on and despite the abuse I got, I feel vindicated Now
If this is not meant to be sardonic, then your 'opinion' is one of the most deluded, ridiculous and smug I have ever seen on here. What a waste of seconds reading this sheer numptiness.

In recent weeks, I have been so frustrated by Ole but right now I just feel incredibly sad. I didn't cry over Jose, LVG or Moyes, but I have today. Despite all the bad things, he has given us some of the best times since Fergie - he brought back the spirit of Fergie's years, with incredible runs and often some brilliant football. It's definitely been a game of two halves and we can question forever what created the huge difference between the good times and the bad. The players have to take some responsibility, but why did Ole develop this strange style of man management which seemed to border on favouritism, with a stubbornness that was hard to fathom. I would imagine that even the players who were used regularly would have been a bit disturbed by the treatment of VDB and a few others, and maybe that affected them. We'll never know if more squad rotation would have brought better results but maybe it would have been one less stick to beat Ole with. Diallo had more to offer I think and we saw what DVB can do yesterday. We saw players under-perform but they may have had no reason to fight for their place as it was pretty much guaranteed.

I can't see things changing unless we get someone in quickly, even if only interim.

Some of our supporters have been a disgrace though - whatever Ole did, he believed in it - he didn't set out to drag United down.
As always a decent and pertinent post by Livvie! I haven't been here for a while but yesterday when I posted on this thread I was delighted to see you are still posting.
Yes, Ole's style of man management was confusing for the players and supporters. I think it was likely to do with an inability to take calculated risks and also as we all know, players now are more powerful than they've ever been at any point in sporting history.

Their multi millionaire status and ability to move around if they don't like something at their club plus the parasitical agents in some cases mean it is much harder to manage them. It isn't like in Sir Alex Ferguson's prime but nonetheless there are managers who can balance all of this. Had Ole been an outsider and not one of United's heroes, it probably would have been easier for him to distance himself and take necessary actions with tactics and players.

And as others have pointed out, lack of outside perception and input in staff has cost United dearly. I loved Michael Carrick as a player but he needs to leave his position. Others too.

Thanks Ole.

In the full interview he said quite a few times that "I'd be here watching games, where else would I watch them from", "See you soon", "You'll see me again", "Pitchside interviews with you if you want", etc. I'm pretty sure they'll be having him back and I'd love to see that honestly. The guy is absolute class and I have a feeling they'll bring him back in some capacity when the dust settles

Who are you thinking of? On a scale of Z to Z, how would you rate the candidates?
Conte would have been my pick.
Maguie, Ronaldo, Rashford, Fernandes, Shaw,.
These 5 players need to accept that they can be dropped if they don't perform. They are very seldom taken off, no matter how bad they perform.
We need a manager who would not be afraid to drop these to the bench for a time.

Ole legacy as a manager is IMO very poor. Look at the issues we had when he joined, but has he addressed them? We still have a unbalanced squad with lots of deadwood or players we seem unwilling to sell. Then recruitment, one argument was he has built a great squad. So is our defence fixed? Is our midfield fixed? Did we need Ronaldo (again my view no and he has unbalanced the team and is not building for the future or addressign the clear weakness areas).

For all the guff about him loving the club,he picked teams to keep his job. Back 7 against City was a shameful surrender and admission of his weakness. Unwilling to bring in top coaches and to get rid of mates. Then there is recruitment, so how are Maguire, AWB, Sancho and Telles looking? Then we have the lack of backbone when dealing with Woodard. Ed was desparate for him to succeed, so why did Ole not stand up to him. Demand a final say on transfers or new contracts, why are Bailly, Lingard, Jones etc still here? Did he want VDB?

The board didnt want Conte because he was 'difficult'. What that means is he wouldnt sign players for shirt sales or Twitter follows, he wouldnt reward crocks or bad player with new deals etc. Ole went along with all that because he didnt want to be out of his dream job. Not to put MUFC first.

You're absolutely trolling, you're on a thread where people are giving their thanks to Ole trying to pick fights and arguments.

I gave you 3 replies in a row that were just "disagree" and you still had to get the last word in, and then catty, in a thread that you're trolling in.

Such a child, and given the evidence that you simply aren't capable of not forcing your opinions on people who aren't interested, you're going on the ignore list now.

It’s not picking a fight or trolling just not agreeing with you. No idea why you are so sensitive, it’s not like Ole’s going to be reading your comments.

I thank Ole as a manager for trying but that’s it, no need to fawn over him like some in a patronising way to try make up for guilt of wanting him sacked.

I think Ole has done a good job, but ultimately it reached a point where he had taken the team as far as he could. Jose left us in an absolute mess - he may have won some silverware, but it was at the cost of any semblance of long term potential. Ole came in and instilled the first bit of genuine positivity I have seen in the club since Fergie left. He revitalised the team, got them (at times) playing some great attacking football, cleared out some of the galacticos and instead built a team with a core around young English players, that will leave the next manager with a strong side to work with.

Having said all that, it became very clear - especially this season - that something was missing on the coaching and tactical side of things. The players looked lost, there was no particular effective system of play - you want a team to be more than the sum of its parts, ours was the opposite. I said that the board would give Ole until Christmas to turn things around, but the Watford result was simply too much, his position became very much untenable at that point, and it was the right decision to part ways.

I will remember Ole as the one who managed to bring back a bit of the 'old' United, who started building what will hopefully go on to be a successful winning squad, but who fell short on the coaching and tactical level. I still think he would be make a good DoF for us, when paired with a master tactician to sort out the day-to-day/match tactics.

Henderson, Maguire, AWB, Shaw, Sancho, Rashford, Greenwood - thats 7 English players who could form the core of our team over close to the next decade. It may not be fashionable to say this right now - but they (along with others in the squad such as McT and Donny) are good players, capable of a lot more than they have shown lately. We also have an abundance of quality youngsters coming through the system.

The job for the next manager is relatively simple - sort the midfield out, and get the players playing as a team. Ole's job when joining was a much harder one. I think he has left the club and the squad in a much better state than he took over, and he deserves credit for that.

The funny thing about Ole is, I can see him back at United as interim coach one day.

Lets be honest, the Glazers will mess up another few managerial appointments. It'll all end up in a mess with us needing an interim. And you just know, if they give him a call and say: 'Can you take the team for a few months?' Ole will drop anything else he's got on and come running.

His legacy, really, has been his undoing. United spent the best part of a decade treating 'top four' like it was a trophy. By securing back to back Champions League qualifications Ole reset the bar for himself: Challenge or go. Long term that's a good thing. No other big club (besides maybe Milan but they're are reasons in Milan's case), tolerates 'transitions' of eight, nine seasons. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juve, none of them would allow so much mismanagement of resource as we've seen under Moyes, Van Gaal and Mourinho. Especially without it leading to top honours, domestically or in Europe. Florentino Perez isn't spending a billion euros for a Copa del Rey and a Europa League.

Ole's legacy is that, now, Man Utd expect to compete at the top table again. Instead of celebrating mediocrity and Thursday nights somewhere we've never been before for the craic. That, in and of itself, has made his three years at the helm worthwhile. I hope we never again fall back into the trap of looking down and being happy we're better than X, rather than looking up and asking why we're not better than Y.

I have nothing against him even though I was in 'Ole Out' group since beginning. And that's because I was never convinced he's the right man to take us back to glory days.
I'd never insult him as he's still a United Legend and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
I blame board and Glazers for this debacle.

Ole was the right man at the right time after Mourinho. It isn't his fault, that the people in the club, who should have the competitiveness of the club as first priority sticked for too long on that fairy tale. That meant that Ole was burdened with a task that would have been a challenge even for better managers than him.
In my eyes he exceeded expectations, he earned this thankfulness and I personally think, he raised the bar for his successor quite a bit. Even if it wasn't too high considering the shortcomings of Moyes, LVG and Mourinho - somebody had to change the trend and Ole did that without any question. He should be proud of himself about what he has achieved. The last days of his tenure were an all-time low, I hope, the despair some of the players now show will end in some sort of reaction and won't turn out in the end as some sort of guilty feelings. If even a few of them stopped trying because they lost trust, they should be axed as well for letting him getting the axe for some of their shortcomings.

Whether Ole was the best in this or that regard, what does is matter right now, it will take some time to see things more neutral. Right now, there is way too much uncertainty and frustration in the air. His time is over, no need to express all the bad feelings anymore. I hope, the club makes a good decision regarding his successor and we will continue to progress from now on.

To be fair to him, he wasn’t brought in as a permanent manager. But his results in those first few months was spectacular. He deserved to be appointed as permanent manager. He did well for 2 years. Finishing above expectation in the league. Reached a few semis. Very almost got us the europa league. But we were not as dominating in games like Liverpool and City. And this year we were horrible to watch in some important games. The squad is heading the right direction, thanks to him. But unfortunately we need a better manager to go to the next level. Thank you Ole. You did your best. Always a class act.

Spot on. Our standards have fallen so much.

Yep, United isn't about making friends or whatever drivel that came up in that interview. Fergie literally booted Beckham out of the club 4 years after being the best player in the team that won the treble.

The standards he set have been long gone for a while now, unfortunately.

Thank you....and without wanting to sound gushing or insincere, I feel the same way about your posts :) I don't get here too much either, definitely less than I used to when I neglected way too much real life!

Agree with you about Michael Carrick - loved him as a player, but he looks way too quiet and inanimate to take over a position that needs someone with a Keane type fire.

Not sure if my standards have fallen but got to say that I've enjoyed supporting United a lot more during Oles tenure than that of the previous 3 managers, irrespective of trophies. I really loathed Mourinhos United (especially after we bought Sanchez). This team is likeable (aside from Maguire) and I hope the next manager is able to get these winning. We have a good squad but need a new RB and CDM to be competitive.
