Spot
I think the thing to remember is that our scouts are paid pro’s unlike most on this forum. If Ten Hag thinks Amrabat is the man I suspect he’s one of many scouted and one who they believe they can sign within a budget to do a specific job that Ten Hag has in mind. Suggesting that Ten Hag and the scouts are wrong whilst not being able to read his mind on tactics and position is naive.
Spot on. Ten hag knows the players that fit his system. I love amrabat but have full trust in ETH choices anyway. I think this season we will see his tactical nous and progressive playing style come to the fore.

I don't know enough about Amrabat to know if he's good enough for us, but we definitely need someone to take some game time away from Casemiro - there's no way he can start every match at his age and maintain his exemplary standards, as we saw last season, so if we do sign someone capable of playing there, then they'll get some starts no doubt.
Add to that, there will be games where we want to set up with a double pivot to gain control of the midfield. Having Amrabat next to Casemiro would be ideal in these situations.

Would be an excellent deputy for Casemiro. Whenever Case got suspended last season, we would be in big trouble - back 4 totally stranded, unprotected. Total loss of midfield control.
Amrabat is a nasty motherfecker(fighter) who can win the ball back and is press resistant enough to help us bypass the press and progress the ball further up the pitch.
I just hope the signing doesn't get hijacked, we shouldn't waste anymore time. Act immediately.

Another season with Mr Invisible(McTominay) as a Casemiro cover could turn ugly.

Weirdly enough I am most excited about this potential transfer more than I did for rasmus, Onana and Mount. The little bit I have seen and what I have read about him excite me. He gets stuck in and then can pass the ball very well, what's not to like. He and Onana will help us keep the ball better.

It's pretty hard to sign somebody that you could throw in for Casemiro and not be a little worried about things slipping because we are going to play a very open style with Mount, Bruno plus Rashford not being great defensively. I believe that's why ETH went for Casemiro and seized upon that opportunity to begin with. It was expensive and he's aging but it's kind of hard to get somebody defensively great that's also a good enough footballer at this level. There are a lot with interesting defensive stats and attributes but the technical side is not so impressive, and vice versa.

Hard to say what the best plan is, I can see why somebody like Lavia is definitely the more "exciting" signing because of age and he fulfils the understudy type role in people's minds and there is the unknown that he could develop into anything whereas Amrabat's ability is reasonably capped. Who knows, just because this Amrabat link is strong doesn't mean that if sales go our way we might not try for someone else. I think Amrabat was a lot to do with financial pragmatism because he's affordable, known to ETH and we knew he'd probably remain available.
Just FYI, I am not really a Lavia fan in terms of "we should bring him in instead". If you ask me, I would be fine, if we bring in somebody from Portugese league or Brazil or whatever as long as he has some credentials defensively, like a certain Ecuadorian kid 2 or 3 years ago... Or bring in somebody old. My point is, make sure the skillset is there in case of need. Nothing against bringing in Amrabat on top of that.

I think this guy will become a fan favourite in no time if we sign him.

He's got that determined playing style that gets you going from what I've seen of him. Similar to how you feel when Martinez is defending
Pashun...

For what its worth, I for one am not saying that ETH is wrong on stuff. But maybe he values the next season more than for example a competent Director of Football would. I have no doubts about Amrabat being a player that will be very useful in some situations. But that line could have been said about Fellaini too.

Weren't you the person talking about respectful discourse, then you post a one word piss-take response to my comment.

Thats true. But it certainly wasn't an attack on you or your take. All I wanted to remember is that certain attributes have been held higher than they should in the past and I thought, it would still be in peoples heads. Seeing him being praised for giving his all playing for his country in an international tournament is a tricky measurement in my book.

edit: But apologies if it came across differently. Can see what you mean

Painfully slow process. Can't imagine how he must feel.

Probably like someone who was told we like him and will look at him once we make space.

I keep repeating his on a list of targets to which none of us actually know where he sits. He could b 3/5. Everyone just assumes he’s number 1.

No bother. I wasn't mega offended, just thought it didn't fit with what you'd said before.

I think what I'm more referring to is workrate and a winning mentality. That thing where you're saying to yourself, no way you get past me.

It's what can make the difference between two equally talented players. One of them won't give an inch and the other goes missing in tough moments.

Don't really see him as Casemiro's long term replacement. It feels more of a functional signing who will be used to grab control of games. ETH has tried chucking on McTominay and Fred in games and it never worked if anything we lost control. This lad will give us what we need both off the bench but also allow us to switch the midfield up as needed.

Yeah he isn't Casemiro's long term replacement

Don’t think we’re affording him no matter who leaves. They’ll probably want 100m for him and we’re looking at a CM and a CB so we need to buy smartly.

Would have to sell McTominay & Henderson maybe even a Sancho too in order to fund it

Not deputy. Competition. Tactical option.

Casemiro came out of left field last season. Maybe something is cooking out of sight.

The most underrated part of his game is his defensive intelligence / football IQ. Just try to follow his movements during a game, he literally predicts where the ball is going to be with astonishingly very high accuracy. This gave an illusion that he is "everywhere" and "all over the pitch" although he doesnt run like headless chicken ala Fred. He is like a magnet to the ball. Also his passing has surprised me in a positive way. Truly one of the midfield greats of our generation.
Yeah Casemiro is damn clever. He’s like a wily old boxer, dominating the centre of the ring, covering half the distance of his opponent.

He takes the shortest route to where the ball is going to be. Occasionally he dives in but a lot of his tackles he just calmly cuts in front of his opponent and collects the ball. He’s highly efficient, as you say, the opposite of Fred (who we love and will miss).

Being as this is the Amrabat thread, it’s worth mentioning that he seems to have some of the same game intelligence, from what I’ve seen, and is more mobile and a better passer than Casemiro.

Having those two compete with each other and provide tactical options will be a great resource in the deep part of midfield.

I thought his preference was to play in Spain.
It does not bode well for us if he only comes here because we will pay him more.

I never heard that. Romano says he only wants Utd and is waiting for us.

If we want to replace Fred's energy than surely Hannibal is the man.
Totally different players, surely?

Amrabat would not be brought in to replace Fred’s attributes. Fred is being let go because he doesn’t have the right attributes.

There's been talk among the British media circles that this whole thing has been overblown by the Italian media, and that there would need to be further outgoings before Amrabat comes in(Fred was already replaced by Mount).

We need to hurry up here. I expect Liverpool to be players here if they miss out on Lavia. Their need for a deep midfielder is as desperate as ours if not more desperate.

Apparently already turned down Liverpool weeks ago

I thought this was a dead cert a few weeks ago, now it seems a bit dead.

Hopefully it gets done, he'd be a cracking addition and we really need another midfield (Cas / Mount / Bruno / Eriksen / Mct / Mainoo is nowhere near deep enough in my opinion) but yeh, not so convinced now that it will?

A couple of weeks ago I was certain it was contingent on Fred/Donny leaving, however we still aren't seeing it pick up pace even though that's now happened

Donny's not officially done to be fair.

You'd think we'd bring someone in, I can't imagine ETH is content with having less midfield options then this time last year.

Pretty sure we're broke and it's likely that Hojlund will be the last signing of the Glazer era.

Maybe because Maguire is leaving forced us to switch focus on the defense. i mean we still have bodies in midfield that we can throw when things get desperated unfortunately same cant be said about defense, now we left with such limited options in Varane, Licha, Lindelof, and make shift CB in Shaw. i wonder why the strong words from ETH on Maguire in the latest press conference maybe because he doesnt really want to lose him at this point?
