Thought they were very good.
Martinez will only get better and I think Casimiro and him will provide some much needed steel to the side.

I hope Varane can stay fit. This partnership seems to be the best we have, two quality displays.
It has been good, but we need to see far more games. It will be jumping the gun to say the defence is sorted - there needs to be much more.
He picks his battles well.
It has looked good, but anything without Maguire was going to be a large improvement. Hopefully Varane can stay fit and Martinez keeps showing up the doubters including myself.

If Varane stays fit, then it has the potential to be a very strong partnership, especially with Casemiro in front of them.

I think most new Varane has to be the right side CB. And Martinez is undroppable after last 2 games . Maguire it may well be the right thing to drop him . Varane complements Martinez both are top class on the ball, and both find a pass both play quicker.
Not just Varane/Martinez, but Malacia as well. There's a real bond between those guys on the field - they want to play together and for each other. You never saw with Lindelof/Maguire/Shaw. Dalot doesn't seem to be part of that, though.

Thought Varane carried the defence today. Made defending look so easy. Martinez was a little shaky and could have been more composed at times. Nonetheless this should clearly be our 1st choice pairing for till they underperform.

Finally an elite cente back pairing since....dare i say Rio and Vidic. That's mad. Rojo, Jones, Maguire, Lindelof, Smalling, Blind, Bailly, Evans and then the grads like McNair, Blackett and Tuanzebe.

What a partnership. Martinez with two MOTM performances and now Varane with a MOTM. We shall how events unfold, but we're sorted at CB.
Varane was a beast at the back for us today and we’ve still get Casemiro to get into the swing of things to protect the defence.
Pundits (lead by Rio and Neville) spent 2 years trying to push a story how Maguire needs a partner. The thing is thst Maguire makes other worse. He even broke Varane last year.

This pair is clicking, they celebrate tackles, blocks like they have scored a goal. Looks like they communicate very well, both are good at covering each other when one CB is aggressive.
Was a but nervous about Vardy bullying Martinez a bit today. But, he seemed to embrace the physicality and snarkyness that Vardy does and I think that's a good experience for him going forward. He had him in his back pocket that Vardy moved to Varane who also put him in his back pocket.
Clearly Maguire was hard done by, it's clear any defender would struggle in this line-up... wait...
These 2 are playing together like they've been doing it for years.
Maguire has been the issue like most of us knew. You can even feel the spirit in the team is completely different without him in the team.

What you cannot put a price on is defenders that instinctively know what to do in any situation as it unfolds. The level of decisiveness is a real deterrent for forwards because it reduces their thinking time to a split of a second. Picking your poison if which way to go in real time is incredibly difficult; Martinez is on you in a flash and you can’t turn him, you also know he’s going to take you on/out if you don’t do anything. Varane is silk, at his best, you simply have to be special or on fire to willingly opt for his side of the backline.
It’s only going to intensify with Casemiro screening. Such a huge difference for us back there.

As a pair they compliment each other very well in terms of their attributes. Hope they both stay fit!
