So, how about that Varane + Martinez partnership?

Ladies & gentlemen... We have our centre back partnership. Looked awesome together, good communication and understanding - who drops/pushes up etc. We'll be able to play a higher line too going forward.

Only going to get better with Casemiro in front

Little things like language might help too. Both CBs and DDG are fluent Spanish speakers, playing close to each other. Which might help with Casemiro too in front of them. The English can be kept out wide and upfront.

Varane making sure that he gets to play with his bestie Casemiro again. What an incredible match from him today. Martinez also very solid.

You can call it conspiracy talk but I still believe Ten Hag is under pressure to play Maguire as often as possible IMO.

Once we establish ourselves as an attacking force, it will be very interesting to see which side forwards opt to go down on the break. Martinez is in their face as soon as they go that way and Varane’s athleticism makes him an undesirable target. With Casemiro shortening that thinking time to pick your poison, it’ll be a fascinating watch.

They were just excited that Maguire ain't playing. The bench was grim on the contrast.

I had to laugh when there was a shot of Ole his British core of Shaw, Maguire and AWB sitting next to eachother on the bench. You could find three non-english players with the same quality for the price of one of them.

Regardless of what the media tell you, Martinez is a shoe in. After that, if Varane can stay fit then yes, he should partner him.

Think its important that we get another left footed centre back next season, though.

Its so important to our build up play.

If Varane can stay injury free then we got our brand new partnership. No more soft Maguire-Lindelof shit.

If Varane can stay fit, Maguire should never play a minute again for our club. Lindelof is a fine back up option.

Varane is still only 29 and has potentially 4-5 seasons left at this level, it would be so great if these two could get a proper run in the team together. Let's hope Varane can stay fit, but it's hard to be too optimistic about that part.

Based on today Malacia, Martinez, Varane feels like an incredible upgrade on Shaw, Maguire, Lindelöf in such a short time.

Varane's typically been the "deputy" central defender throughout his career, to Ramos and then to Maguire (which is hilarious of course). It was interesting to see him shine tonight as the guy leading and organising alongside a junior partner. Just need him to stay fit and Maguire to stay gone.

That partnership looks fecking brilliant. They just compliment each other so well. Please god stay fit

Really reminds me of Rio and Vidic.

Varane is the rolls royce CB, cool as a cucumber, Lisandro is the aggressive no nonsense CB.

The only difference is that Lisandro is the better player on the ball like Rio was. Whereas Varane is better in the air but that is only because he is taller.

It was very good. But they are both extremely expensive, experienced players.

Good should be the minimum expectation

Tonight I felt nostalgic because for a brief moment I saw Vidic and Rio on that pitch - it was glorious. This is going to be one hell of a defensive combo. We probably need a backup to Varane that is not named Harry Maguire though.

I think before we get too carried away with the partnership or extrapolating too much from this performance in general, we have to see how we fair on a consistent basis and against different opposition.

Theres no doubt we had a structure tonight, there weren't many gaps, we allowed Liverpool to have the ball. But there's a lot of PL games where you have more individual battles and cover more space.

It was a good start.

Should be our go to for now, they compliment each other well based on the rather limited sample we have.

They had chemistry as well, seemed to hype each other up, haven't seen that with Harry.

Martinez is 24 years old by the way. He's still pretty young

Superb partnership. Proactive, fast, gritty and they play with a lot of passion.
Varane is the real captain of this team.
4 Champions league winner, World cup winnner, FIFA world cup winner, 3 la ligas, captaincy for Real Madrid and France NT etc etc… just stay fit and it Will all be good.

“We’ve got to play well tn, Martinez, neither you nor I ever want to play with ‘arry again. He makes us both look shite”

I imagine Varane said something of the sort to Martienz before the game.

Harry spends most of the match pointing fingers at his team mates because they can't cover his lack of pace and awareness. He's a real downer. There was none of that today. Even when Bruno fecked up he just got a "what the feck man, from Martinez and De Gea"

Even IF Varane gets injured......

Lindelof should be his direct replacement.

Just never play Maguire again.
Not even in the micky mouse cup.

Sell him for peanuts.

We need to keep clean sheets to win games. Varane/Martinez with Fred and Casemiro in front of them will be a very strong foundation to do that. If we don't get De Jong.

Refreshing isn't it?

Having a semblance of a working partnership will do us a world of favor right now.

Hopefully varane keeps fit and this is the one.

It's definitely a conspiracy theory. Who's going to pressure him to play Maguire? The yanks? And to what end? It's not like he's marketing dream like Ronaldo who he won't be pressured into playing either.

It was great to see and no doubt our best partnership at the moment.

What I would say is that it wasn’t just the fact that they’re a better pairing which made us look more solid. A large chunk of that is all the effort and team pressing that went on in front of them. That’s the aspect we absolutely need to keep every week.
