...in Randall's thread - why?

My inner 9 year old wants to shout 'How could you, ignorant swine?!?' - but that's hardly a great invitation to a decent discussion, is it? And I honestly understand that those of you who weren't there during Robson's pomp won't really be able to comprehend the vast difference between the two.

I have to admit, to me it's like voting for Messi over Maradona just because you weren't there to watch Maradona.

So, do your worst trying to convince me Keane is even fit to shine Robbo's boots! :)

Because Keane was a fantastic player too and played in a team which won a heap of shit.

It was always better in someone else's day wasn't it ?

"You weren't there man, it wasn't as if you had any choice in the matter or that the archives of footage aren't readily available with which to make an informed decision. But because you weren't there I am going to say it was better and tell you that you are wrong"

Old people.............

Having Keane was like having an additional man on the field. Dobson on the other hand was a 1 man army.

What about the tools who voted no for goal line technology??

Also, the people who voted that Ronaldo was better than Messi, but Messi was in Maradona/Pele bracket.

What kind of idiot votes for a player they haven't seen?

So in a hypothetical scenario you'd vote for e.g. Yakubu over Pelé because you've seen the former play?

Look, I said in the OP I understand the younger supporters' bias towards Keane. I'm still very curious, especially if there are any older supporters who voted Keane.

I guess I just wanted my own Messi vs Ronaldo thread. :p

Never saw Robson play, that's why I went for Keane

Would of been a bit hypocritical of me if I'd of done differently

I have seen both of them play. It is still Keane for me.

Well the comparison isn't really the same is it? Records can be used as a guide. Pele's is obviously far superior. It's a little different when comparing two players with similar standing and reputation. As it goes I don't go in for rating players in a best ever category. I prefer to say best I've seen.

Stupid debate that has been done a zillion times on here. Who was beter Giggs or Scholesy? Rooney or Cantona? Beckham or Valencia?
Its all a giant waste of time. Robson and Keane were both monster legends and lets just leave it at that

Sir Having looked at literally hundreds of United players both past and present, Sir Alex said, "There are so many greats to choose from at this club. The 11 i've selected here doesn't even include Bryan Robson, Duncan Edwards or Ryan Giggs - not to mention Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke."

Alex's full team selection for his personal choice of the stongest composite Manchester United side of all time reads:

Peter Schmeichel
Denis Irwin
Steve Bruce
Jaap Stam
Gary Neville
George Best
Roy Keane
Bobby Charlton
David Beckham
Eric Cantona
Denis Law
Why not!

Fergie seems to agree with some of us...not you though. :p

I barely saw Robson play, and I'm going to vote on what I have seen and not what I am told.

What kind of idiot votes for a player they haven't seen?

Exactly.

That and the way that all great players auras shine brighter over time, distilled into a highlights reel within the minds of people who saw them play.

Nobody remembers average performances or games where they're not at their best. Not for long anyway. They happened though, they're just remembered more clearly for the more recent generation of players.

Erm, George Best could go either right/left, Ronaldo could go either right/left, Giggs could play left, Best right etc.

Think, McFly...think!
I've edited my last post to possibly explain the Ronaldo bit.

He obviously considers the best left winger we've had was Best and the best right winger was Beckham....think about it.

Yeah it's a different viewing game now. I think George Best was fantastic but in fact I hardly ever saw him, Maradona I saw some more on TV, but Messi I see him him every time he farts.

I'm old enough to have seen Maradonna play and remember him being amazing in the World Cup. I didn't see - and doubt anyone who did remembers - all the many lower profile games he must have played in where he was on the losing side, or going through a dip in form. History is kind that way. It youtubifies a players career.

forgive them - they know not what they do

Of course now when you can see every game played by Real and Barca there are still muppets who want to tell you than Ronaldo is better than Messi.

What kind of idiot votes for a player they haven't seen?

But why would anyone involve themselves in voting for something when they'd not seen enough of one of the options?

It's just voting for a player by default, and that doesn't really achieve anything.
