I admire Modric for the way he has put his head down this season and got on with it; seems like a good attitude

Very good point. There's a general tendency for players to let their minds wander off elsewhere till they get their way eventually.

modric would be a much better fit for us and closer to what we need.

I don't think this point needs to be made any longer! The choice was embarrassingly obvious back in the Summer yet alone now.

Absolute bloody nutters! The lot of 'em!

He can feck off. I don't want him anymore. He did not want to come if we kinda wanted him too because he was holding out for more money. Inter are doing bad and now he wants to leave and he will be 28 in the summer.

Rather not frankly. He's been poor this season and Inter's reverse in form after 8 straight wins came when they changed their shape to try and accomodate the returning Sneijder. If we go into the transfer market for a centre midfielder, which will not be essential should Scholesy choose to play on, I'd much rather go after Modric or someone like that.

Hopefully we will move for him in the summer. It's clear Fergie would love to sign him.

Would be a quality signing.

''The fact they decided to hold onto Modric against what everyone thought was a big Chelsea bid swung the players around,'' said Ferguson.

Sounds like we see no value here

It seems that Sneijder is going to be available for a decent price. But there's no point, since he cannot and doesn't want to play in a midfield 2.

I still can't believe how many people were blind and went for Sneijder just because it seemed like we wanted him. quality>hype.

This time last year Sneijder did seem the obvious choice. I voted for him on this poll.

But a year is a long time sometimes in football. It would appear we have dodged a massive bullett and Modric would certainly be my choice now

What he's shown this year is what he'd shown previously, though. He needs the team to be built around him to excel, he has injury issues, he has a big ego and it was questionable whether the form he was showing was going to last as he'd never shown it before. None of which applied to Modric.

For all the hype, Wesley has really only had one outstanding season in football. Plus he was always all wrong for our system anyways, essentially playing where Rooney plays right now. But even then it is pretty obvious that we were in for him this summer. No idea why.

Modric has always been "the one" for me. Almost a like for like replacement for Scholes.

I'm glad we didn't get him. Apart from the fact that he's hugely overrated and only plays well in a system where he has lots of space and time playing on the counter, I also can't stand the arrogant little brat.

Surely we should be able to get Modric this summer.

Logic suggests it's possible but we'll probably not as it will not fit the value policy

Yes, he didn't panic at all even when we had that throw-in near the corner flag.

:smirk:

Modric was always the better suited signing for us, that much was clear, especially since it became obvious (towards the tail end of last season) that SAF was reverting to his favored 4-4-2 in future - and IMO, he'd be the perfect foil for Carrick in midfield.

I still can't see Spurs selling him for anything under 40M and at that price, I'd rather not.

I've always been firmly in the Modric camp but I think now more than ever he is the perfect player for us.

He can play in a CM pairing, which would inject some much needed quality to our midfield.

He can play in the hole, behind the striker, providing cover for Rooney, who we currently are over dependant on.

He can play out wide if needed, giving us another option on the wings.

Age wise he is what, 26? Pretty much ideal, just coming into his prime but old enough that he is unlikely to make another major move in his career, and not so young that he would completely block the progress of our youngsters like Cleverley.

The perfect summer for me would involve us getting Modric, and then a defensive midfielder as cover for Carrick - Martinez has always been a good shout there and the Bilbao game showed it.

i'd like both!

i think Modric would be ideal in helping to transistion our style of play into a quicker short passing style but Sneijder would probably bring far more goals to the party which is always nice and not something we have a lot of from CM at the moment

if i had to pick one it'd be Modric

Do you really class Sneijder as a CM though? In the formation we play - essentially 4411 - Sneijders role is surely the Rooney role behind the other striker, as opposed to one of the deeper lying CMs. And we have hardly lacked goals from Rooney!

Would love modric here. Always felt he was way better suited to us than sneijder. But, if Spurs qualify for the CL, which they will, there is absolutely no chance Levy will sell him. Our best chance is to hope for some kind of miracle and that both chelsea and spurs dont finish in the CL spots. aint happening though.

Regarding martinez, as i said in the other thread, he's far too good to be cover for carrick. if we have to get him, it'l be to partner carrick which considering the similarities in their style, i dont see happening.

After the performances in Europe recently I'd say changing the formation wouldn't be too bad an idea. Broadly speaking, if we play 4-3-3 with Rooney up-top we have 10 players contributing to the build-up, with 4-4-1-1 we only have 9, because Welbeck and moreso Hernandez barely contribute other than goals.

Spot on really although I have to say I'm still a bit surprised that Wesley has dropped his form so dramatically...Even in the friendly recently against England, he looked a bit disinterested and there was little of the intensity he had shown when arriving at Inter...Perhaps it was owing to the nature of a friendly but it's still hard to understand how he's seen such a drop

Dodged a big bullet, United...I really thought he'd be perfect for your club but fantastic that the move never materialized

Do you even see how Welbeck plays?
His workrate is phenomenal, he constantly gets into good positions and his passing is also quite good.

You rarely see him dropping back though, do you? He contributes more than Chicharito, certainly, but not in the same bracket as Rooney.

Very few strikers drop as deep as Rooney so i dont see why thats a yardstick. Welbeck is very good at linking up with other players and contributes a lot to our buildup play. Even against Norwich, even though he missed chances, he still had a good game overall because of how much he contributed elsewhere.

Do you think Sneijder is still on our radar? With Inter not looking likely to qualify for next year's champion's league, Sneijder coming off of a relatively poor season, and Inter talking about a major squad overhaul, this could be an opportunity to get him for about half what we would have paid last year. I still think that he would improve us in Europe and is worth a shout if we can get him for a reasonable price.
