Smalling signs new contract

Unfortunate that he never became the player I thought he would.

I thought he was an unbelievable talent when we signed him, but he's still turned out to be a very good player for us.
 
Nice to see our twitter fans are clueless tits judging by those replies. He's a fine defender and should definitely be at least back up if we get better centrebacks.
 
Fine. The one central defender id keep, even if it would only be as a squad player.

I don't feel the hate for Smalling. I think he's a perfectly good centre-half and has been our best defender for a few years.
 
I’m sorry, but have we all been watching the same player over his 9 seasons at the club? There’s not been much improvement in almost any aspect of his game. For every good game he has there’s an average one and a shit one sandwiched in between. Sure, he’s the best of a bad bunch but why that gets him a new contract I have no idea.

He’s exactly the centre back we need if our intentions are to qualify for the Europa league.
 
He should be our first choice squad player. At a stretch, he can even start regularly alongside a truly world class CB who can cover for his deficiencies. Useful player and good professional, pretty much deserving of the contract.
 
I'd keep him for now because Jones and Rojo are worse and should be sold first (and we're struggling with injuries as always). But 4 years? He's average and not good enough to start in a team with high ambitions, never was and never will. Should be off in 2 years, at least. Another bad decision in my view.
 
It's good that we have CBs with good distribution in Jones and Rojo, right? ;)
 
One of the few in the squad that deserves a new contract. Sell the rest of the pathetic CBs and buy a decent partner or two now.
 
Yes get in, just need to get Jonesy signed up now and we're sorted at the back for another five years.

I dont agree with how you see his games.
But if you think so what would you do, let them all go for free and sign 3, 4 new defenders in one summer?
I mean he's a good squad option if we'll improve on our CB options which we should do.
 
Rewarding mediocrity here in my opinion, sign of the direction the club is heading. He is a substitute centre-back at best.

Exactly this. Some people just want to sell almost all our players and replace them with shiny new ones, which is completely unrealistic. Only CBs that should leave are Jones and Rojo, because they aren't reliable enough to call on when our annual defensive injury crisis is under swing. Smalling at least is never injured and very very rarely has a completely shit game, just average to good.
 
we cannot sell Smalling right now as he is going to play for sure at least as a squad player. I think Jose wants to sell Bailly that is why Smalling is being retained.
 
You're telling me Chris Smalling will have a testimonial at Manchester United. Something Van Nistelrooy, Stam, Cantona and many other greats never received one!
 
Wow... this club is truly going down... Smalling and Jones are what's wrong with the club... There's so much mediocrity at the club and we are extending contracts over here instead of having them sold. Tuanzebe is a better CB than Smalling and Jones and he's not being given time over at the club. What a shitfest.

I’d rather have Lindelöf than smalling. The position has evolved and smalling simply doesn’t have the necessary intelligence or distribution required to a top level CB. He’s an okay 4th choice centre back but should be getting no more than 20 appearances a season.

Our midfield and attack will improve massively from dealing with the defence. Put the money there immediately on two centre backs.
 
Young, Jones, Valencia next. Bailly will sold.


Ideally: New CB (Koulibaly/Škriniar, Lindelof, Bailly, Tuanzebe, Smalling.

Sell: Rojo, Jones,

Well we must improve on our defensive options gradually, not in one take. I'd keep Mike, Lindelof and Bailly for now.
Problem is Rojo signed a new contract recently and I fear Jones will somehow sign a new contract too.

There is mediocrity in every club. It is up to the coach to get th ebest out of them.
 
There's nothing to be mad about this news but there's nothing to be delighted with. Meh, Ok. That's the only thing to be said regarding this. Quick bring on Young and Valencia new contracts now.

Don't have an issue with this one. There are many others I would rather see go.
