Sir Gareth Southgate - Really?

Bunch of miserable bastards on the caf.

It's deserved. International football in England has definitely been frustrating, under a better manager I maintain we'd have eat Italy...

But it's also never been as fun than under Gareth. We've never been as hopeful and it's been a great ride even if we haven't won anything. Giving fans genuine hope and belief that we can win an international trophy (something I've never had) it's worthy in itself.

Should be knighted for the summer of 2018 alone, that summer has never been replicated and probably never will.

Agreed.

I have no issue with it. Took over the team in difficult circumstances and is clearly very well respected by the players. To perform over that period of time is an achievement.

I've heard people say that a "top" coach would have had enough to get us over the line, at least once and maybe that's true. But you might see how good he was for that team going forward, because the squad isn't that good that it should be winning major honours.

Personally, I think we should have beaten Italy, but we lost by the finest of margins and that's just how football is.

The "he's won nothing" is bizarre. The last two Euro summers have been great for the country. If Terry Venables had been knighted post '96 I don;t think many would have had an issue wth it. He's never been called a "loser" so far as I can recall - people loved him and have fond memories of that summer.

Honours system should be scrapped. If they're not giving them to their mates, like Johnson. Get ridiculous stuff like this.

Sir Gareth Southgate?

Christ, they're just giving them out to anybody these days.

They knighted that fella who owns Wetherspoons last year. The guy who brings his grubby chain pubs to small towns, undersells the indie pubs and runs them out of business. They knighted that guy. Knighting Southgate seems reasonable by compare. There seemed to be a period where we all loved Gareth Southgate. There was never a time when anyone liked Tim Martin. He looks like a melted troll doll, the Tory shitbag.

He had the best England squad ever, as I see it, and won nothing. But I am not English and do not know, what it takes to be awarded a knighthood. I just thought you had to do something really extraordinary.

People get knighted for all sorts. Don't see why it's an issue or why people care. He certainly deserves it more than arseholes like Jacob Rees-Mogg

Definitely. Best English manager since Alf Ramsey, conducted himself with dignity, a wonderful job.

Very well said.

Are England fun? I obviously have a different perspective as a neutral but they are the worse (as in more boring and less successful) version of modern France, which, itself, is an extremely boring team. While the 2004 team, for example, was great to follow.

Or is the fun simply in the (ultimately unfulfilled but somewhat realistic) possibility of success?

The honours system is need of modernisation but, in the context of that flawed system, I don’t have an issue with Southgate getting a gong. He made supporting England enjoyable in the first half of his reign (the turning point being about 30 minutes into the Euro 2020 final) after years of humiliations and general alienation from the national team. He also conducted himself well in the face of some culture war attacks and comes across as a decent person, unlike many of the slimy recipients of these honours in recent years.

No one can be more undeserving than Sir Gavin Williamson.
Or Sir Nick Clegg. Embarrassing.

I am amazed Becks has not been knighted yet. Arguably one of the most successful British players / brands over the last 25 years. Great role model and has done well post football too.
Haven’t you heard of Sir Philip Green

You must be fun at parties.

Since 2018 every tournament has been fun to watch and follow with England despite the lack of success. Forgetting about the football on the field, it's one of the only times in recent history the nation actually comes together. It's a fun atmosphere in the country, people who hate football and sports in general you'll find at the pub watching on. It's become less about the final result, probably because we could win and but know we probably won't, and more about the ride along.

I most definitely am not!

Fair enough — as I've said, my view is from the outside hence my question.

We need a "Community note" feature on here like Twitter.

I mean, that is nothing. He's won nothing as a manager (club or country) and a couple of tinpot things as a player. Go look at the honours lists of the other football manager recipients of knighthoods.

The fact that Southgate has been knighted is ridiculous, let's be real

To be fair to him, he sits in a club alongside rolf harris, jimmy saville and a thousand other reprobates.

There is no bottom to the lack of talent needed to get knighthoods. Just be nice to the right people.

Services to football I can kind of see from a longevity point of view. A years of service kind of thing like how some jobs will give out something or other to acknowledge someone who has been there 25 years or whatever. Not so much in terms of absolute excellence.

A long playing career with tons of games in the top flight. 57 caps for England as a player before ending up as manager for them for 8 years. That's rare. The same length of time as manager as Bobby Robson, also knighted and only behind Alf Ramsey and Walter Winterbottom, knighted too. More games in charge than Robson.

yet they won’t give one to ten hag for fecking us right up.

Lots of undeserving people have been knighted, so – not really shocked. However, southgate being knighted for services to English football ahead of, say, David Beckham shows that every decision maker over at Buckingham Palace is clueless about football
