Sir Alex Ferguson has retired

I'm glad it's on his own terms, rather than a health issue.

what a rollercoaster it's been. I'm old enough to remember the Tommy Docherty days so the success we've had has been even sweeter, if that's makes sense.

phew!
time to take a breath and let this news sink in.

I'm an American, but I have a Scottish father.

As a kid in the 80s I loved Aberdeen. I went to the States and forgot about football for many years.

In the late 90s I started watching again and became captivated by United.
Only later did I make the connection with my childhood love for Sir Alex's Aberdeen.

Once a gloryhunter, always a gloryhunter, I guess. But Sir Alex and his United are always able to speak to the boy in all of us.

Personally I like the choice of Moyes if that's the case. Going Scottish is part of the club's tradition and history too.

I've only just hearing about this now. Devastated to be honest. I've only ever known Fergie as our manager.

To the fans, thank you. The support you have provided over the years has been truly humbling. It has been an honour and an enormous privilege to have had the opportunity to lead your club and I have treasured my time as manager of Manchester United

:(

Don't know if this has been posted but just seen it from Eric Cantona:

Eric Cantona: "There can be another Cantona, Scholes, Giggs or Ronaldo but there can never ever be another Sir Alex Ferguson" #mufc #thankyousiralex

Plus, good to see this from the Barcelona lads, even though it is Goal.com. Checked out Tello's Twitter and is confirmed:

Really nice comment from Alves.

It's sunk in a bit now and, as others have said, he has his health. Still, what a horrible feeling that was reading this thread last night. Hands on head and choked up; it's amazing the impact he's had on all of us. He's provided me with some of the best memories of my life!

I'm going to cry in the shower now. I couldn't sleep at all and picked up my phone at 5:00am(in the US) and saw confirmation. I couldn't get back to sleep again. Now off to work.

Have a hug, lads.

Stayed up late for a basketball game. Woke up, checked the caf. I'm still in shock.

Gutted, Sir Alex sitting on the bench was one of the only sure things in life and that'll be taken away from us after the season ends.

It has only been six hours since the news has been confirmed. Couldn't you wait a bit longer before spewing your hatred of Keane?

Come on Damien, even that joke of a player; Barton, paid a small tribute. It is not too much to ask, considering what Sir Alex had done for him and his career. By the way, he was my favourite player after Eric Cantona. However, the way he has treated the club and the big man, I believe I am entitled to say whatever I like about Keane, since he has retired.

May 8th 2013 will be one of the saddest days ever (for me).

I think you're being well over the top, Gary Neville, Phil Neville and a few others have Twitter accounts and haven't even put anything on them. Maybe Keane is doing something else and can't release a statement? The FA Cup is on ITV on Saturday, I expect Keane on the panel and I'd imagine they will bring it up somehow. Keane works for ITV so it'd be surprising to see on him Sky Sports News and there's no other way he can release a statement.

Yep, that was my view as well. Even if he were to release a statement before then, six hours isn't much time to give before having a go at him. Tributes from other former players are still coming into Sky Sports News.

I'm sure there's hundreds of current and former players and managers who have yet to express their opinion on Sir Alex retiring. This will go on for the rest of the year, in all likelihood.

nooooo, now I'll never be able to attend a Manchester United game live under Fergie :(
