Manchester City agree deal for David Silva

Silva is currently with the Spain World Cup squad in South Africa
Manchester City have announced they have reached an agreement with Valencia to sign Spanish international winger David Silva.

City have agreed a five-year deal with the 24-year-old, who will complete a medical and sign for the club once his involvement in the World Cup is over.

Out comes the chequebook for the first time this season!

If they use their heads and actually buy some decent defenders they could end up with a team...

But use their heads? no chance of that. They will probably buy another 4 defensive midfielders.

We dont need him we have Obretan and Berbatov

The death of the longest caf muppet hard on in the history of caf muppet hard ons

He will be kicked out of the PL quick enough. Won't fancy the hard stuff I reckon.

Still, he is only going for the money so what does he care.

Nothing to indicate Silva has yet agreed to the move, but presumably he will when he smells the money.

Yes there is...

Manchester City ar eset to sign Spanish international winger David Silva from Valencia for an undisclosed fee.

City have agreed a five-year deal with the 24-year-old, who will complete a medical and sign for the club once his involvement in the World Cup is over.

He said: "The Premier League is one of the best competitions in the world and I want to bring success to City.

"They are a club with a great future with fantastic players. I want to be an important player in City's history."

Silva is City's second major signing of the summer, following the capture of Hamburg's German international defender Jerome Boateng.

When players see what is happening at City and the ambition they are attracted to what we are building and want to be a part of it

Manager Roberto Mancini hailed Silva as "one of the best midfielders in Europe".

He said: "I hope he will be a very important player for Manchester City. I am so pleased he is coming to us, I think he can make a big, big impact.

"In signing David, we are showing the world that we are bringing the best players here and that we hope to compete to win the Premier League.

"When players see what is happening at City and the ambition they are attracted to what we are building and want to be a part of it.

"I hope he does very well for Spain in the World Cup and then joins us for our pre-season, ready to compete in the Premier League."

Silva began his career with Valencia, enjoying successful loan spells with Eibar and Celta Vigo before going on to establish himself as a key figure in Los Che's first team and becoming a regular member of the Spain national squad.

He made his international debut in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Romania on 15 November 2006 and has since gone on to play 37 times for his country, scoring seven goals.

He played an integral role in Spain's Euro 2008 success, playing five games and scoring once, against Russia in a 3-0 semi-final victory, but he has been used primarily from the bench during his country's march to the quarter-finals at the World Cup in South Africa.

"I would like to thank Valencia as a club and all of their loyal fans, and my team mates there and staff. I have enjoyed six years at Valencia, they discovered me as a footballer and they will always be a special club for me," said Silva.

"But the time is right for a new challenge. There has been a lot of speculation about me in the British and Spanish media, and I need to fully concentrate on playing for Spain in the World Cup.

"That is why my advisors have been dealing with City for me so that I can have my attentions only on South Africa and playing well for my national team."

Silva and Toure are capable of giving Citeh an edge they lacked last season. On top of that they are still looking at more signings. I think they can be confident of a top 4 spot this coming season.
We on the other hand will be in a similar state as last year. Smalling is hardly a step forward yet (although he may be in time). Hernandez I have high hopes for, we should be more prolific than last season in terms of goals.
If I am brutally honest, this year I think we will struggle to grab a top 4 spot. I am fairly sure we will indeed end up in the top 4 but it is going to be a lot harder going as all our direct competitors seem to be taking bigger steps towards improvement, with the exception of the Scousers who will surely not see a top 4 spot again for a good few seasons coming.

I am actually surprised that Madrid did not push to sign him but maybe the Special One does not regard him as highly. Actually, Barcelona would have done very well to sign both him and Villa and keep their partnership going. But it seems like they are set on getting Cesk back.

Don't be bitter. Competition is what makes the league exciting

Good to see more talent coming into the pl

I would say city actually have more talent in their squad than us now though

Any news on who City are going to offload?

I did read that new Wolfsburg Manager, Steve McLaren was interested in Craig Bellamy as part of the deal for Edin Dzeko.

They seemingly chose Di Maria over him. And Barcelona seemingly chose to go after Mata instead.

That should put things into perspective.

You are kind of contradicting yourself there, mate. I agree with you on the Dippers, but outside of Chelsea and Arsenal, I am not convinced that there is that much being done by Spurs, other than Harry mouthing off on everything related to football in the last month and offering himself around.

We don't need to worry about Villa while Heskey is playing for them.

True, and Di Maria has 'Mourinho' written all over him. Even though Villa - Silva -Mata was the driving force behind Valencia, I always thought that Silva was the higher rated one behind Villa. Let's see how he adjusts to life in the Premiership. No guarantees for success. But tbh, I would have liked to see him as our signing.

Bugger, he's actually quite good. And with Yaya Toure coming as well they could have a hell of a team next season.

Need to buy some defenders though.

No, probably not. Even so I see Citeh, Arsenal and Chelsea and us taking the top 4. It is going to be very challenging to take the top spot and although I hate myself for saying it, if I was completely neutral and I had to bet on placements as things stand I'd probably predict 3rd or 4th for us. That is still a very respectable position but we also need to hope that some of our youth makes the step up this season because the following (2011-12) season we are going to lose Gaz, Giggsy, Scholes and VDS (at the very least).

A lot of good players, but a distinct lack of very good/world class players.

Care to post up the Barca/R.Madrid/City/Chelsea squads for next season?

Barcelona stupidity in buying Chygrynsky and Ibra for a combined £85m is eclipsed by Man City paying £100m for Dzeko Silva and Toure

It was a response to a muppet's claim that City have more talent in their squad than United.

No, can't be bothered looking up the other squads.

We have a squad full of excellent footballers - that's what should concern us. Let these other clubs play their versions of fantasy football management.
