Should I buy a Wii or a PS3?

Who knows!? I wasn't saying it would be in the next 4-5 years, although it possibly could be! The original xbox was released in 2002, the 360 was released in 2005, only 3 years later and that times already passed since the 360's arrival! There can easily be a major development in technology, there probably already is compared to the current status of the 360 and PS3, and if it means the developers can vastly improve on games which are out at the moment then there going to make it! Just a matter of time I suppose!

I just don't see any need, and the Wii has proven this based on 10 year old technology. We are not going to see an increase in display resolutions again for a long time, and the CPUs in the XB360 and PS3 are pretty powerful. If anything, we could see a PS3.5 or an XB540 with more powerful GPUs and maybe more memory and bandwidth. Games on these systems would render in 1080p with higher resolution textures, but 720p on the current systems, just need more pixel pushing power. This would be very easy to do.

I'm playing PS3 with the HMDI cable, my current TV has somewhere around 561p, the one I'll buy has 1080p. Will the diffrence be notable?

There's a simple test:

Name your five favourite games of all time. Go:

Very much into the sports
Loves PES and FIFA. Tiger Woods games are quite good. Liked Call of Duty and Devil May Cry. Also a fan of prince of persia games. I used the wii in a party house really and it was great craic with the mates but the current house is more laid back and not many gamers. Probably go with the PS3. I cant believe its not backwards compatible though. I thought that would be a basic requirement.

Tiger woods and Pro Evolution are at their best on the Wii and this new motion control add-on should really gaurantee that finally the best version of boxing games too.

Wii isn't just about friends and multiplayer either, games like Godfather are given a new lease of life, Zelda and Mario are their usual quality and games like No More Heroes and Call of duty easily step up to anything on the 360/PS3.

Still, it seems you are convinced more about the higher-end systems, so if it's a case you want to continue the PS2 experience, than the PS3 is your best bet. I wouldn't rule out the 360 though, games are more or less the same quality (some slightly better, some slightly worse) and most importantly cheaper for the back catalogue than either the PS3 or Wii.

My best advice however, is not to be swayed by any of us. Head over to www.gamespot.com and check out the list of games on all three systems (they list by category as well as top rated, etc...) and make your choice based on what games excite you most.

Good luck!

I would get a 360 at present but there is no way it is not a noisy console

sounds a bit like a leaf blower

ps3 is definitely going to go from strength to strength, and is the better choice for the long run

the wii, well i dont know where it can go from here, not much else they can do that is going to be groundbreaking

if MS pull their finger out and add blu ray then the 360 is going to be a tricky customer for the ps3to surpass for a while

The trouble with that is it will put them back in PS3 price range or above. They don't need it the same way that Wii doesn't. In fact, if they do want to beat PS3, the best thing they can do is get the cost down as quickly as possible.

I still reckon you should get a 360. Most sport titles are multi platform, so I don't see the need to spend £100 more to buy a PS3.

If he wants a games machine, then I think 360 is the best value. Plus it's got some cracking titles.

I have an Elite, (actually on me 2nd..), as do my brother they are noisy...

But still 360 > Ps3

I got a PS3 and a Wii but it depends on your tastes.

Do you like Zelda/Mario/Smash/Prime/Kart? Those are all brilliant must have Wii games.

If your mainly into sports games or good/improving graphics is important to you then I would suggest you go with a PS3 or 360.

Tiger is the only sports game I still have fun playing on the Wii. Pro Evo was good for a few weeks but in the end I got tired of waving my hands around and wanted some good old fashioned PES so I got the PS3 version. Did'nt help that that sucked as well:smirk:.

I've just bought a brand new PS3 - received it this morning!

I have no basis on which to make this comment as yet, but I feel it's my duty to say

PS3 > xbox360 & wii

Conclusive proof, I'm sure you'll agree.

I have a ps3 as well. They're great, a crafty bit of kit and an all round machine.

If I had to buy a console for right now though, specifically for gaming, I would go for the 360. By next year I suspect it will be the other way around - unless the 360 exclusives are tasty and the PS3's aren't but saying that most games are multi-platform.

Not sure the Wii is worth the price it is at the moment personally, unless that kind of gaming is specifically what you are looking for.

Not as a hardware box it isn't. :p

And even now, on the software front, I'd say that (unless you really like Halo and GeoW) XB360 = PS3.

I'm not arsed about hardware boxes and all this shit...

I don't get enough out of what the 360 offers me, let alone what a PS3 would do.

Just on a gaming perspective, and online community 360 is the better and cheaper choice.

And don't you dare throw the £40 online charge back at me ;)

Read the E3 thread.

GOW2

PS3 'biggest' exclusive has actually been produced on 360 too

I have both a ps3 and 360. I play my 360 a lot more, but then its only because that is the console all my friends have and so I play it a lot more simply to play them on LIVE. Both are fantastic consoles, I don't see why you have to have a favourite. Both noisey as feck as well, though I can't see why that should be of any relevance.

If its mainly sports games you want then 360 really is the ideal choice due to the superior online gaming you'll get. If you want to pay a hundred squid extra to play metal gear solid 4 then its your call.

Bought a wii a few weeks ago. Got Mario Kart and Super Mario Galaxy. Kart was good but Galaxy has been brilliant so far, just like Mario Sunshine was on the gamecube.

M64 > Sunshine > Galaxy.

Galaxy is an excellent game, platforming at it's finest. However, I'm a little disappointed at the difficulty level which is why Sunshine was better.

Oh and you HAVE to get No More Heroes, it's fecking awesome.

You've never played Mario64???? Hands down the best 3D platformer still to this day! It's on the download channel, get it!

No More Heroes is kind of like GTA with lightsabers. It's also much, much better than GTA4. It's a Wii must-have.

Well I'm sold. Will call around tomorrow and ask for it. Can the wii connect wireless btw? I can't seem to go online with it.

I'm actually currently stress testing mine. It's been running GT5:P for 4 days now with the air conditioning off in 30 degrees heat. Up to now I've heard it go mental once for about 20 minutes, it's currently sounding like a nothing when sat on the sofa, and humming (like a laptop computer does when its fans turn on) when you get right up to it. If your PS3 is making more noise than that on a regular basis, then I would suggest having it looked at. Seriously, the PS3 cooling solution is very well engineered. The fan is very large and thus doesn't need to pick up unless it really has to with the Cell or RSX screaming at it. When it does go off though, oh does it go off.

Because it's far better value. When it comes to upgrade the HDD, and he will have to in time, it will cost the same if not more.

Yes but the hdd you get for the PS3 is only 40gb, so the same can be said about needing to upgrade it too.
