9) Saints give Reed chance to clean up against Arsenal
Whether Ronald Koeman opts for a 3-5-2 or a 4-4-2 against Arsenal on New Year’s Day, the absence of Morgan Schneiderlin will hit Southampton hard – the Frenchman is suspended for the match after picking up his fifth booking of the season (and his first of two) in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

Alongside Victor Wanyama, Schneiderlin expertly patrols the space in front of Southampton’s defence, exactly the area that Arsenal – Santi Cazorla and Alexis Sánchez in particular – are most dangerous in. With Jack Cork still sidelined, Schneiderlin’s suspension probably means that Harrison Reed will get another chance to impress.

Another product of Southampton’s youth academy, the 19-year-old was excellent in his first start for the club nine days ago against out-of-form Everton and it would be fascinating to see if he can again live up to the nickname his team-mates have given him – Ray Donovan, “because he just cleans up in midfield”, according to Shane Long – in what should be a tougher test on Thursday.
:lol::lol::lol:

If we were after a midfielder from them it should be Wanyama. He showed his ability at Celtic, and I was surprised no one bigger than Southampton wanted him. He's only going to get better.

Absolute monster. He will bully us when we play them again.

No team with top 4 aspirations will sign him. Was crap against us, booked after second foul and couldn't do his usual foulmachine antics (see home game).

The recent Arsenal - Southampton game he completely bossed you lot.

Were you at the game? He didn't - he was largely ineffective after the card. Saints were poor until they got their tails up after two goalkeeping mistakes- we were abysmal.

Why did he have to be at the game.....epic trollbait comeback.

Fonte anyone?

Just no. Completely different set-ups today. Fonte would have struggled as much as Jones, Smalling or Blackett with this formation and how we are trying to play. They defended well as a unit and were mostly in there own half, while our centre-halves needed to be much more involved in the build-up. Jones and Smalling would have looked better in their game plan as well than Fonte in ours.

Fonte anyone?

Already 31 years of age and not really willing to move according to his last interview. And cmon you are United, you surely can do better i suppose. But he's certainly better than Lovren.

Leaving out the usual suspects like Schneriderlin or more recently - Clyne, I've been pleasantly surprised with Wanyama's improving performances this season. A bit raw technically and struggles with the pace of the game at times but he's been a largely consistent backbone of their midfield, especially with Schneiderlin being sidelined for a while. Not at the top end of our ideal purchasing spectrum looking forward to be fair but a decent consolation if for some reason we aren't able to adequately bolster the squad in the near future. Would be an astute squad signing for ~£15 million (presumptuous figure mind, would likely be around £20 million), could project into a marginal top level starter if we brush up the technical aspects of his game and a childhood United fan to boot. :D

Southampton will qualify for Europe we won't. They might be shopping us

Hey now.. :(

This Schneiderlin guy is good, I like his positional sense. I haven't seen much of him previously, but looks like a very decent player.

both Schneiderlin and Wanyama would be immidiate upgrade for us. We need that kind of player who will be strong aggressive helping the defense and no extra centre back is needed. Couple of other Soton players would come handy as well. Obviously Clyne. Fonte is brilliant (alternative to Vlaar) if we really are for a cheap experienced defender.. JWP and Reed are also future stars..

Schneiderlin has been the real deal for a few seasons now. Would love for us to sign him.

Like him a lot.. slow start to his EPL career but who haven't? I am quite surprised by his technical progress tbh and when he get to sprint he is quite quick over long distance. Remember his run over the half way line when he forced Carrick to concede corner he had maybe 20-30 yards disadvantage over Carrick but was lightning quick then. And well this is it. As soon as we realize that we should add that kind of player we are all right.. building up on 34 old Carrick whose legs are gone is nonsense not mentioning that we pretty much don't need playmaker. Would much rather see someone beasty like Wanyama monitoring in front of defense and there will be no need to play extra centreback.. enough creativity up front

I don't think Fonte will leave Southampton as he seems to have a special relationship with the club and just signed a new contract. I also think his age makes him not ideal for us, though I do think he is vastly underrated. He's a real leader for them in the center of defense and it's no surprise that Lovren for example has had his only truly successful years partnering him. Fonte has also been excellent with Alderwiereld, Gardos and Yoshida.

Out of all their players I actually think Wanyama is the player we should be looking at. He's improved drastically in his passing and dribbling while at Southampton and is an absolute tank in midfield that would really help settle the defense and provide proper link up play through the midfield, begin counters by intercepting opposing passes and I only see him improving.

The other player that would be a good acquisition is of course Schneiderlin. Offensively he is better then Wanyama right now but I think he is closer to his ceiling. I also don't think he is as tough on the ball as Wanyama and I also think he will be extremely expensive.

While their defense is obviously stellar as well, I'd prefer a truly top class CB that isn't too old which they don't have. I don't think FB is a position we desperately need reinforcements in and Clyne will cost another Shaw at least which in my opinion is not worth it.

I'm not quite sure why we never signed Wanyama before he joined them, I know the Caf experts were against it but he was what we needed at the time and available at a decent priced.

But seeing as we didn't sign him them I don't see the point of him now, he wouldn't offer anything Fellaini doesn't and would cost the best part of £30m. Probably a better player than Fellaini, but not worth the cost of upgrading.

Same as Schneiderlin, really, I don't think he has enough to his game to offer what we need at a sensible price. And for the money Southampton would want I would like to see us look elsewhere.

Obviously if we weren't paying I'd take Clyne, Schneiderlin and Wanyama to improve the squad even if I don't think all of them would be guaranteed starters. When you consider Southampton would want in excess of £20m for them all I'd rather we looked elsewhere, none of them are good enough to be that fussed about.

Said it before in this thread, and I'll say it again, Victor Wanyama. Absolute monster of a man, and he's still young, think he's 22/23?

I wonder if LvG was impressed enough with Schneiderlin yesterday to tear his longing gaze away from Strootman and consider the possibility that there are other options.

Fellaini is a sieve defensively and has no positional awareness, which Wanyama (and Schneiderlin) does. I think Fellaini is most comfortable higher up the pitch while Wanyama is fantastic in central/defensive midfield, in linking up defense to attack rather then scoring goals or being, in general, in more advanced positions. I think that's something United is missing so badly when I look at the sideways passing and the hoofballs upfield by the defenders. It's why I wanted Nigel de Jong as a cheap stopgap in Summer to provide that transition from defense to attack without anything flashy, and to help shield an unstable backline.

Bottom line, I still think United are desperately in need for a player like Wanyama who can both provide stability for the back and move the ball forward to those more creative players up front without much fuss. I think Wanyama will be cheaper then Schneiderlin from the Southampton duo, and better in the long run.

Blind???

We or Arsenal should buy Schneiderlin. I like Wanyama and according to FM 2015 he is United fan, but I don't think his passing range is good enough, most other aspects of his game are excellent though.
