He was sick of the wokeratti cancelling his song. Couldn’t face another one.

I have no idea either, yet.
Awful news. Such an amazing lyricist.
He's been running on empty a few years now.

II was asked to work on a project with him a few years ago, possibly 10 years, and while I was honoured and excited, I quit almost immediately as it just seemed to be exploiting someone who just wasn't well or able.

Why did the woke target that song?

Genuine question as I can’t understand a single word he says on it, so not sure why it’s controversial

Is it the song that says cheap lousy faggot? Fairly tale of New York. I’d say that song has been the main income keeping him going ever since. He wasn’t really able to tour much.

He was a lovely fella and one of the best Irish lyric writers ever. RIP

Ah you know how it goes. Hopefully those bashing him someday decide to take the time to listen to songs he wrote that aren't Fairytale of New York. There is a wealth to be gotten from his lyrics. Until then I guess they'll be mildly entertained every Christmas by being outraged.

Darn Americans censoring everyone else's words.

He really captured a lot of people with his music. RIP

As great a songwriter as anyone I can think of. There's been very few bands I've fallen in love with as rapidly as I did with The Pogues the first time I listened to "Rum Sodomy and the Lash". No one else could could evoke time, place, character and narrative in rock lyrics the way he did. Vale Shane.

Yep, he's in the top category. Rainy Night In Soho is a heartbreaker.

Seen them many times live, an amazing lyricist and created songs that will last a lifetime, thanks for the memories of wild gigs and lost weekends. RIP.

Seen them in the old Point Depot on New Years Eve many years ago and down in Feile the trip to Tipp in Thurles on the last night with the Dubliners bucketed down rain but just one big free for all ceili. A Baird, a poet, hell raising genius. Rainy night in Soho, Misty morning Albert Bridge, Pair of Brown eyes to If I should fall from grace with God loved them all and many more.
Rest in peace Shane.

RIP, what a talent

He was a legend. Loved his music. He’s a one-off for sure, like no one else should ever try to get away with what he did to his body or how he sang. He was an original. On one hand it’s surprising that he lasted this long, and on the other, it sucks he died only aged 65. I watched the Haunted video he did with Sinead and it caused me to well up. Lost both of them in the same fecking year. Sinead when she was bright eyed and worry free was an angel. feck.

Christy Dignam too. Brutal year for Irish music

Watching the TV or is it watching me
Got to admit The Pogues heights were way before my time, of course I'd heard Fairytale at Christmas but other than that I was pretty clueless, this week I watched a fantastic documentary on BBC and have listened to their songs almost exclusively over the past few days and have been blown away by the lyrics but mostly by the conviction he delivers the lines in so authentic, may he RIP

A great album. I still have the vinyl I bought when it came out in 1985. So many great songs on it.

RIP legend. Fairytale of New York might be the best Christmas song ever.

It's fecking awful. The man was a genius and will be surely missed but it's absolutely tragic that in so many people's eyes he will be remembered for that song
