Yes, £100 million is a ridiculous amount of money for 1 player. However we have spent lots of money in recent years but we are still nowhere near Real or Barca in terms of quality players because we spent it on mediocre players. Fellaini, Rojo, Blind, Depay is a total of £100 million. That's the thing with transfers, sometimes it's better to spend huge on 1 player and he will be a key part of your team than spending on 3-4 mediocre players.
Di Maria under LVG is different to Pogba under Mourinho.

Is it better to spend huge of top quality or spend it on many lower quality players? The answer is obvious. I am happy that we're going in big for Pogba and doing it early too, whether we succeed or not is another matter.
Griezmann new buyout is close to 100m euros I read and he obviously wants to stay at Atletico. Also I doubt Kroos wants to leave Real unless forced out and he would surely command a fee of at least 80m euros also. No top player will come cheap. The Kante one is crazy as it seems no one with CL football is willing to activate his 20m pound clause as of yet. I would love Kante and Pogba and I think it is perfectly feasible with our funds as we will surely offload a few players.

You only need to look at Liverpool for the answer.
They opted to swap one great player worth £70m for 4 average players at about £20m a pop. The difference was 4 league positions.
This is a funny argument really for me. Sure the money thrown about for these players seems insane to us mere mortals but then it seemed insane when the first million pound player was transferred.
I remember having a conversation with someone when we bought Andy Cole and they couldn't believe how much we spent. £6.5 million was it? Player prices keep on going up and up and they will as long as the money rises. It's all relevant.
I get the argument but to put it another way, you could buy 10 functional, utilitarian Ford Mondeo's for the price of a Ferrari. Perfectly logical and reasonable cars. But if you can afford a Ferrari, why would you buy 10 mondeo's?

The way prices are going, those 3 players would cost at least £120 million, about 140 million euros minimum. Our squad needs an injection of top quality players and that's what Mourinho is trying to do.
I think there's also a theme of power throughout the spine. Bailly, Smalling, Pogba, Schneiderlin, Martial, Miki, Ibrahimovic. There is speed, technique, power and strength running through that lot which completely transforms the make up of the team. Good luck trying to bully that team!

I'm in two minds about this one. On one hand, I'd happily say that no central midfielder should ever be worth this sort of money. Whether its Matthaus, Viera, Rijkaard or whoever, they really shouldn't be going for the sort of fees being bandied about. On the other hand, we've seen in recent years that the market is devoid of any real quality and breaking up big chunks of money, and buying multiple players perhaps isn't the most advisable of plans to pursue.
In 01 Juve sold the worlds finest footballer for 75 million euros. For that sort of money they then bought Buffon, Thuram and Nedved. They were all sure deals and world class players without question. I saw Lippi referencing what happened at the time when asked about the possibility of Juve letting Pogba go but its a different era. Proven world class footballers are not a dime a dozen. As you see even with Juve, they' ve gone out and spent money on a Pjanic, whom you do not know what to expect from him.
Teams especially in the prem have been burnt by running around spending money on players in recent years. Pool splurged a mountain of money, and ended up with Carrolls, Downings and hendersons of this world. We did the same, and none of Fellaini, Mata, Hererra are going down in united folklore. City have been trying to improve their team but ended up with sterling and Mangala for 92 million quid.
Getting a proven world class player these days is such a mission that maybe just maybe paying all this money for Pogba can be justified. One thing we do know is that by signing him, we're gonna have a midfielder that will likely serve us well for over a decade. That sort of security is priceless in todays market conditions.

I suppose one way of looking at it is - City paid £50m for Sterling and Pogba is easily twice the player he is..
But the Pogba money is so supremely stupid that it needn't be spent on 4 average players, most of us would settle for 2 really good ones. It's not like there are no examples of teams swapping one great player for several good ones is it? Juventus did just that with the Zidane money - they bought the likes of Thuram and Nedved and had plenty of success.

They sold Zidane for 73.5 million Euros and then went on to use that money to buy Thuram and Nedved for a combined 83 million Euros. And after they did that they spent another 53 million Euros on a goalkeeper. His name was Buffon and the fee is considered astronomical even in our days when the market has gone nuts. Why they did it? Because they believed they were getting the next (at that time) best GK in the world who would be the basis of a world class defense. I believe Pogba falls into the latter category.

I don't really see a big issue. If we spend £160M on 4 players and ship a few out, we may 'only' be spending £100M, although net spend isn't the issue. My issue would be if he came but didn't perform, but I can't really see that happening tbh.

If we stop appointing managers with longevity and their history at the club as the main criteria and understand that the best way to have a prosperous future is by securing our short and middle term success, yes i believe we'll be able to keep Pogba and whoever else comes to play for us.
No, I'd say Pogba would want to leave for Spain in 3/4 years. But as long as he's under contract, if we were to sell him to Madrid or Barca, I can't see us selling for anything less than a profit. Which is one of the key of buying the best young players, as their values only increase for a fair few years after buying .
