Sergio Reguilon - Round 2

As always it depends on the deal.

Shaw would still be 1st choice if he stays fit.
Malacia is still at the club (I think)
Harry Amass turns 18 during the season.

Spending 30 million on a shiny new LB 'might' not be the best long term plan just yet.

Adding a super cheap back-up option like Reguilon and giving Shaw/Malacia another season. Giving Amass minutes in the second half of the season in the Cup/Europa.

Sure it's not ideal or particular clean, but United aren't going to spend big two CB a LB and a RB if AWB leaves. Far too many fires to put out in one window.

Shaw has to be managed carefully, but should still be able to play a good amount of games per season and he's world class.

Malacia had a decent first season, we'll see what happens with him but he's still at the club and one big injury doesn't mean he's an injury prone player suddenly. He was also decent in his first season and there's no reason to give up on him.

Martínez also shouldn't be considered an injury prone player before there's any evidence of that. It's just guessing with both him and Malacia to label them injury prone.

Like you said, Harry Amass is a huge prospect and he's turning 18 next March.

I think it's very obvious that we should either buy someone like Reguilón, who will cost nothing and be a decent backup option for the short-term, or buy a left-footed CB like Branthwaite or Calafiori who can either take up the left-back position, or have Martínez do it and the new signing goes to LCB.

To the people laughing at this, do you think spending 40 million on a Kerkez/Gutierrez, or 80 million on a Theo Hernández is sensible squad building, when we have Shaw, Malacia, Martínez, and a 17 year old world class prospect in Amass, already at the club?

Considering everything, getting someone like Reguilón for under 10 million is much more likely to be a smart decision, than throwing money on an issue that might not even exist, as there's absolutely zero evidence that either Martínez or Malacia are injury prone players, their issues that saw them miss most of the last season is not related to being prone to injuries. Shaw has to be managed carefully, but he's the best left back in the world as well.

I tend to view this completely differently, and regard our left-back situation as a bit dire, as reflected throughout last season. Shaw is injury-prone and unreliable, and we really should be looking to move on from him after ten unsuccessful seasons (and I don’t view him as the best LB in the world or even close really), Malacia has looked out of his depth even when fit and hasn’t played in over a year, Martinez is not a left back, and Amass is a complete rooky in the same bracket as someone like the much lauded Ethan Laird. It’s a problem position for us that requires more than a short-term fix IMO.

Yeah, i really can't imagine there is any substance to this one.
Most likely LB options would be Kerkez & Gutierrez I would have thought, but I don't know how the City / Girona ownership would effect that one.

Kerkez would be a very intelligent pickup. Only 20, can play LB or LWB and after a slow start looked excellent for Bournemouth as they picked up after xmas.

Weghorst and Sabitzer next

Would take Sabitzer in a heartbeat. He can play several positions well, it was utter madness not signing him for such a small fee.

Reguilon can stay exactly where he is, he's useless.

I know he's not world class level, but he was actually pretty decent for us last season. Considering he was brought in late, he's not the worst player we could buy. He'd be cheap and wouldn't be a high earner.
As much as I like Shaw, the guy seems to have legs of Lego these days and feck knows what Malacia is playing at.

Reguilon had a bit of bite to him and got stuck in, which I liked. Given a bit more time at United I think he could be quite good for us, in an understated way.

Im not saying hes a long term option by any means, but If he's cheap as chips then we could do a lot worse while we improve in other areas.

Would be very strange, he wasn't that good when he was here. Not an embarrassment to the shirt by any means but how the heck does he move us forward at LB? Only sign players that progress the squad, in ability or potential.

Would be fine with this purely because other positions are also priority (particularly DM) and Amass as a prospect is Kobbie level

Shaw/Malacia/Reguilon for a year until Amass hits 18 is perfectly fine if we sort DM, CB and CF reinforcements

Sancho- Federico Chiesa swap
Pursuing Rabiot
DeLegit for 35M
Zirkzee for 35M

Looks shrewd on paper but it can go bad too, Looks like UTD are definitely trying to find some bargains

I wish we get Braithwaite and Ugarte of all players we connected!

Honestly, I liked the guy. Not extending his loan probably cost us a few points in the league this year. I wonder how much the difference in prize money between 6th and 8th in the table is and if that would've covered his loan wages.

Remember there being a lot of hype around him when he left Madrid to join spurs, seems to have stagnated since.
