Both Dest and Meunier are proper attacking wingbacks, operate best in a 3 and are frankly terrible defenders. So they’re very similar — Ten Hag clearly wants an offensive profile there

Can’t remember much of him then as FDJ & MDL were pretty much the two main players that’s everyone was after at the end of that season.
Dest I thought was very good in the UCL when playing for ETH. He seemed very capable in possession but was good in the tackle. I only watched two fixtures with him playing and he was certainly standing out not for anything spectacular but rather his competence. I've no idea of his performances at Barcelona but if United get the Dest that I saw in those games he's easily the first choice over AWB / Dalot.
I don't believe Dest was part of that squad in the 18/19 season. I think he was still playing with the young Ajax team at the time and was brought into the first team fold in the 19/20 season. I think he only made about 23 appearances for Ajax before he left for Barcelona.

If you want someone like Dest, why did we send Laird on loan?
To make sure Laird gets enough games, Dest will be rotational with Dalot and I don't think that will serve him well.
Get another full season behind under a good young coach like Beale and he will be ready to nail the spot down next year.
Better for Laird to be playing every week.

Xavi would rather play Araujo (top CB potential but poor with passing) over Dest at RB.. club is desperate to get rid of him. Maybe ten Hag sees something we all don't but as to why Bayern/Barca were fighting over him, that is a mystery to me.
Dalot is a better RB and AWB to Dest is more of a sidegrade than upgrade.
