People are being pretty harsh here about a kid about the same age as James Garner who's been a first team regular at both Ajax and Barcelona who people were raving about not so long since. He's fallen away at Barca but Ten Hag could get him back on track. Its a low rrisk transfer as the price will be low for a player with a lot of talent and more than a decade of football ahead of him. Personally i'd snap him up.

A loan is good, he has a lot of flaws but he's a good dribbler who can carry the ball well which could help Antony a lot.

He's been a regular at neither club, at least not for prolonged periods

His level of technique is in a whole different stratosphere to AWB. That’s more of what we need.

Its evident that ETH doesn't rate AWB and he wouldn't play him so we look set to run Dalot to the ground. A loan for Dest with a right to buy clause would be nice. If he does well then we'll buy him

Any Barca fans/Americans got an opinion on him?

Surely there must be some potential there, no?

Why did he have Bayern and Barca fighting over him in 2020?

But yeah, if he's shit, surely we could've just had Laird as Dalot's backup if AWB is leaving.

Dest is a player with great physical and technical abilities. Their big problem is decision making and positioning in the field.
He has been with Barcelona for 2 years and has barely progressed.

Looks like we’ve saved the Dest til last

(unfortunately I didn’t think that up myself)

yeah watching him with USMNT and that is the case there. Constantly in great positions but then nothing comes of it most of the time. Would be worth a punt though for sure.

Would it be apt to say that Dest is a failed winger who relishes the isolation plays (with and without the ball) more than the other defensive work. Because that's what I'm seeing from his highlight clips.

Needs a better coach. Same can be said for Dalot too who looks a bit better this season

But now we're standing face to face
Isn't this club a crazy place?
Just when I thought our chance had passed
You go and save the Dest for last

That is correct. He was a winger who wasn't that talented, that's why he was never called up by the Dutch youth NT's

To everyone here who has said he's shite I say this:

Are you sure? Would you like to take this opportunity to retract your statements and at least pretend he's good?

Dest has more conditions to defend, he is very very fast and with great acceleration. In the matches he played against Vinicius, for example, he was never dribbled.

Dalot, on the other hand, is very slow. You just have to remember the match in OT against Villarreal and what Danjuma did to him.

I really hope we land him, and shift AWB. Most of Antony's runs and chance creations for Ajax were accompanied by overlapping or underlapping runs from Mazraoui, so getting another right-back in that is good going forward will be important to unleash Antony's potential in my opinion.

I've wanted a RB all summer, to help create space for Sancho. There's a reason why Sancho have been a more effective on the left-wing for United, because he had Shaw overlapping on that side, which in turn creates space because a defender will have to cover Shaw as well. Whereas Sancho was more often left alone on the right when AWB played. Dest being able to play as a left-back too is an added bonus. I'm all for it.

How good is he comparatively to AWB and Dalot? Would he be much of an improvement?

Offensively he might add something but his attitude is questionable and defensively he's pretty weak. Dalot is more rounded. AWB obviously the better defender.

How many top full backs playing today are truly great defensively or how many of them are known for their defense? Its all about being on the front foot, trying things and then having the recovery speed to get back when the things you try don't work. This guy is two-footed, fast and very comfortable on the ball and doesn't look like he'll cost a fortune. Why not?

I am interested in what the Americans on here think about Dest. I live near the US border and there was a lot of hype about him in the US media about him being one of ghe best players on the National side not that long ago. Is it possible that Barcelona was not a good move for him and it would be a better fit for him here being managed again by ten Hag?

He is like a streetplayer that plays like he is for the first time on an actual football pitch.

Nice for YouTube highlights though. I wouldn't want him back at Ajax and our RBs as worse than yours.

Kid is young, electric pace and solid on the ball...AWB is better than him defensively but light years behind him offensively

if we could sell AWB for 15m quid and get Dest on loan that would be an ideal move for ETH

with casemiro this makes a little more sense too to have him stay further back and give our RB full reign to push forward to work with Antony.
That being said the last thing we need is another half player, especially in defense imo. It he can track back and cover, good. But more importantly can he learn to release the ball early and play well with Antony or Sancho. Looks a little selfish from what I’ve seen. Dalot is nailed on as the starter right now so maybe that’ll help convince him to do what we need.

if getting him on loan while moving out Wan-Bissaka is doable, it's a no-brainer to me. There's still upside with Dest (still only 21) and he knows ETH ... Wan-Bissaka is what he is, as in not good enough for a good PL side simply because he offers nothing going forward.

hope it happens. Cut your losses with AWB and move on.

Would this be our first loan with a right to buy ever as I can’t recall any? Cue about 20 examples being thrown at me..
